Sunstone link

Dear JoeSperazza. Thanks for the link added to the sunstone article. I checked it and although it has many good things, the reference to Hrafns saga is not correct. The description how the sunstone was used is actually in Rauðúlfs þáttr, not Hrafns saga Sveinbjarnarsonar. So I would propose the link should be removed from the main text and added at the bottom as an external link. ArniEin (talk) 14:15, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

OK, thanks, I'll do that! JoeSperrazza (talk) 14:18, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Sunstone (medieval)

Thanks for all the work you've done on this one and on Vegvísir, and sorry about obliterating one of your edits on the former - you're correct, it was an edit conflict. My browser crashed mid-edit and I was so glad the edit window came back with my changes, I didn't think to check whether anyone else had been working on the text.Yngvadottir (talk) 05:26, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

No worries regarding the edit conflict, and thank you for participating in the proposal for deletion discussion, and mentioning Vegvísir. This process illustrates some of the things I love about Misplaced Pages!
  • I just happened to be looking at Newly created pages (trying my hand at Vandalism patrol) and noticed Vegvísir being created quickly, and just as quickly being recommended for a speedy deletion.
  • Reading the article didn't show a good reason for a speedy delete.
  • Before I could do anything about that template, another editor removed it, leading the proposer to then create a proposal for deletion.
  • In the course of that proposal being reviewed and commented on, other editors joined the discussion.
  • The net result was four good things:
  1. A new editor, quickly mentored in the details of Wiki article writing, and (I hope) encouraged to contribute more
  2. A good new article was published
  3. A 2nd article improved
  4. I learned some interesting things! I lived in Iceland for a year, travelled quite a bit (I even drove all the way around the ring road, clockwise, all in one long day-light filled day, on June 21st of the year I was there!), and read several of the Sagas, but didn't know anything about Vegvísir or Sunstones.

Thanks for tiger balm

Hey, I'm workin on it. I was trying to revert as you did. Give me a minute please, unless you can fix it yourself. Try not to be so gung-ho about 'helping'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 156.26.17.11 (talk) 19:23, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

What is it you're trying to fix? It was not obvious (for example, you provided no edit summary), or I would have gladly corrected the change.
Please remember to:
  • Put new posts at the bottom of talk pages
  • Sign your posts
  • Provide edit summaries
  • Assume good faith (had you provided an edit summary, it is likely someone, or myself, would have corrected it for you rather than reverting).
Cheers, JoeSperrazza (talk) 19:33, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Before you edited this page, i posted again (on the bottom of your page) listing the problem. It is also now on the Tiger Balm discussion page, as I do not know how to properly fix it. 156.26.17.11 (talk) 19:40, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! I tried adding that brace in the sandbox, but it didn't appear as though it would work. Oh well, it's fixed so that's good for me! 156.26.17.11 (talk) 19:44, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
(Edit Conflict) See Talk:Tiger_Balm#Composition. Fixed. The timing of your talk page entry on the article came after my comment - apologies if I missed it otherwise. As for your comment added to the bottom of this page, I'm afraid an edit conflict interfered. All's well that ends, well, however. P.S. Please indent your comments using ":". Archived discussion

Thanks for the updates. I hope you will alert me to everywhere that links back to User:Reisio in the future as well, very handy! :D Goodness knows I can't find those pages myself. ¦ Reisio (talk) 20:08, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

You are welcome. See Special:Contributions/Reisio if you are having the trouble you mention. Regarding the WP:SPI, I noticed you hadn't been notified, so I did so. I didn't make the report, and don't have a strong opinion on the issue. A very brief glance at the edit histories suggests that the reporting user may be mistaken. As for the Warning header on your talk page, see Misplaced Pages:Template_messages/User_talk_namespace#Layout for its use, and use of warning templates such as I placed on your talk page earlier. Cheers, JoeSperrazza (talk) 20:14, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Like I said I appreciate it; I hope you'll continue to inform me of such things gratis for the foreseeable future. As for the Warning header, that page doesn't appear to be policy, so I don't really care what it says (and even if it were policy, there'd probably be other policy contradicting it), but it is admirable that you were following some convention, I suppose. :) Mostly I'm not interested in your warning because it's unjustified. If you look at the preceding discussion on my talk page, you can see that User:EncMstr reverted me for approximately the same reason you did. He asked me to give a summary, so I did (one he's personally used before). If you didn't think my edit was a "cleanup", I'd hope you would explain why. ¦ Reisio (talk) 20:22, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Regarding the removal of the tag, if the article has not been substantially improved in terms of the issue (references), than removal of the tag is not cleanup. As I noted on the article's talk page, I don't see that the article has been improved in terms of references, hence my revert of your removal. Please continue this discussion regarding that article on the article's talk page, should you choose to continue discussion. Thanks JoeSperrazza (talk)
To me, a giant, redundant, and clearly ineffective box makes an article less clean. ¦ Reisio (talk) 20:30, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
While I agree it is less clean, a more productive approach, rather than searching for such boxes and removing them ("drive by removals") would be to improve the article. Leaving the box allows them to be in a category for those who look for such articles to improve. If you have knowledge of the subject, or the article has special meaning for you, why not lookup and add some references yourself? JoeSperrazza (talk) 20:36, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
I don't search for them, I merely remove the redundant and ineffective on a case by case basis, as I come upon them. If they take more than a year in their looking, I question whether they will ever find it. "If you have knowledge…", that's exactly what I'd ask RexxS. ¦ Reisio (talk) 20:40, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Please use ":" to indent each entry. If you care to not follow that convention on your talk page, you are of course welcome to do so, but I prefer to follow the convention here. As to your comment, I believe we'd agree there is policy to be considered, and not just your opinion, namely:
I'm glad to have your point of view espoused here, but consider stating it earlier (e.g., in response to warnings on your talk page) and attempting come to consensus, not just redoing the removal (note: you reverted another editor's restoral of the tag in question before you reverted mine. I warned you about your first revert, and about removal of the tag, on your talk page). Cheers JoeSperrazza (talk) 20:48, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

WP:USERNAME

Please be sure to read and make sure you understand our policy on usernames before warning users about it; usernames which suggest a conflict of interest aren't prohibited in the policy unless it appears that they are editing on behalf of a group or company, so User:Hannover dk does not appear to be a violation. They've already been warned about their potential conflict of interest, which is the issue here. GiftigerWunsch 18:01, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you, I appreciate the heads up. JoeSperrazza (talk) 18:12, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
As a follow-up to my own comment:
  • You said "usernames which suggest a conflict of interest aren't prohibited in the policy unless it appears that they are editing on behalf of a group or company"
  • They were "editing on behalf of a group", and created an article which showed a COI. That's why I thought both a username and COI warning were appropriate.
In a future, similar situation (I've seen others very similar), should they only be warned about the COI? Browsing UAA, I've noticed similar situations noted there (but recognize that such things have a human element involved, i.e., different admins interpret policy differently sometimes).
Best regards, JoeSperrazza (talk) 18:16, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
It seems unlikely that the username is being edited by the entire Hannover family, though I take your point; I'm not an admin, so I can't see the content of the now-deleted page they created. I had assumed the page referred to the "Hannover family" as in a family tree which the username is very unlikely to represent; if it was deleted as being a non-notable, small family group, then perhaps there is cause to believe that multiple individuals are using the account after all. Essentially there are two sections of the policy relevant to conflicts of interest as they pertain to usernames: WP:ORGNAME, which forbids the use of company names since they imply they intend to advertise for the company, and WP:NOSHARE, which states that an account may only be operated by a single individual. GiftigerWunsch 18:22, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
" If it was deleted as being a non-notable, small family group" - yes, that was the case. Unless you disagree, I think I did the right thing in this case, therefore (issuing both COI and Username warnings on their talk page, but not on UAA).
Thanks again, JoeSperrazza (talk) 18:25, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, in that case it's a possible interpretation that the account is meant to represent the family and your actions were correct; apologies for the misunderstanding. I'm wondering if the "dk" represents the initials of an individual though (or maybe it represents Denmark). GiftigerWunsch 18:29, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
dk is the top level domain for Denmark. The article was about a Danish family by the same name. No worries, and thanks for the kind notes. JoeSperrazza (talk) 18:32, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Justin Rhodes

Hello JoeSperrazza. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Justin Rhodes, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The article makes a credible assertion of importance or significance, sufficient to pass A7. Thank you. ϢereSpielChequers 20:12, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

School Cleanup Proj?

Hey,

Do you think that a WikiProject on School Cleanup would be something of interest? I mean after George H. Moody Middle School was redirected to the main district school site, and your tags, would it be a good idea to start redirecting/merging non-important information back to the district page?

► Wireless Keyboard ◄ 18:57, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, see my further comments on your talk page. Thanks, JoeSperrazza (talk) 19:08, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Template for Redirect

I'm not too good at looking stuff up, but do you know if there is a template that we can put on the article telling the viewers abouta proposed redirect? ► Wireless Keyboard ◄ 19:24, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

I believe the talk page notice (such as one I saw you did already) is the best way. I'll look to see if there's a template, but if so, I'm not aware of it. However, there are templates for lack of notability and lack (or no) references. Those should be added to the article's page, as appropriate.
{{Notability|date=January 2011}} {{Unreferenced|date=January 2011}} {{Primary sources|article|date=January 2011}}
{{Notability|date=January 2011}} {{Refimprove|date=January 2011}} {{Primary sources|article|date=January 2011}}
Finally, I'll note that Henrico High School may not be appropriate for a redirect, based on a very liberal interpretation of the WP:GNG:
1. In the lede, the article states:

Newsweek Magazine ranked Henrico High School number 928 in its 1500 top US high schools. Henrico High was the only Henrico County School to make the list in 2009.[http://www.newsweek.com/id/201160 "The Top of the Class The complete list of the 1,500 top U.S. high schools." Newsweek. 9 June 2009.]

2. I've seen it mentioned that while U.S. Elementary and Middle Schools don't get a "free pass" for articles, U.S. High Schools do. This discussion alludes to that. I've not found the base policy discussion that is explicit on that issue.
As a consequence of point 1, I'm inclined to not Redirect or Merge that specific H.S., but instead try to improve it. As a consequence of point 2., I'm inclined to not propose Redirect or Merge of any U.S. High School articles, until or unless we find a policy or discussion that supports doing so. There's plenty of work to do by concentrating on Elementary and Middle schools only, and hopefully less drama will ensue, as well. I'll reiterate that it will make the process easier if everyone involved takes a very liberal view of "asserted notability".
Cheers, JoeSperrazza (talk) 19:51, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Awesome research! I will stick to that. Thanks ► Wireless Keyboard ◄ 19:53, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! Here's the School Page Guidelines: WP:WPSCHOOLS. Let's be careful to follow them liberally (and by that I mean, if unsure, leave the article be). Encouraging good articles is the name of the game. Cheers, JoeSperrazza (talk) 23:41, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Joe

An editor has posted a message to my talk that appears to be meant for you. You can read the message here. I don't know if this is a big deal, but I wanted you to be aware just in case. See ya 'round Tiderolls 11:04, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. I've copied his note here, where I'll respond.

Greetings Joe

Greetings Joe,

I've received your letter about my new editing. I understand well the responsibility new and old contributors have for wikipedia and people who are reading it. The information we provide must be reliable, trustworthy and providing lots of references for it's validation.

Please notice, that the sections I added in the page about Shen Yun, have many references to them and the information is not something "I made up", as it was well documented and published in various media sources. I hope you'll take some time to read it for your reference, to see that what is written is a valuable source of information and can be checked and verified.

I am not affiliated with Shen Yun, but I've seen the show three times when I lived in Toronto. Now I reside in Israel.

Thank you Dharia (whitecloud7) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whitecloud7 (talkcontribs) 06:50, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Consensus on School Redirects

There's been really no consensus on the redirects of the schools to Henrico County Public Schools. Should we like wait a week or so to see if consensus emerges, and if not, start redirecting the pages?

► Wireless Keyboard ◄ 21:37, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

I think waiting a full week (say, until next Monday) is a very good idea. Cheers, JoeSperrazza (talk) 01:09, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Joe

Hi there. Please keep looking at the article "Criticism of Muhammad" because people seem to be reverting sourced materials that are notable :) Thanks again. --Fancy.kira (talk) 20:18, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

I will do so. I would like to keep the document within Misplaced Pages guidelines, and avoid edit wars. Thank you for the note, and for your contributions. Cheers, JoeSperrazza (talk) 20:29, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Smart edit filter

It's entirely possible that the post removal was accidental - particularly as the edit includes additions from DMS. There is a new "smart edit filter" which I ran afoul of a few times - when editing a section I think it tries to merge changes which previously would have just conflicted. Not 100% sure on the details, but this comes up fairly often :) --Errant 23:27, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

The diff clearly shows my text removed, and the editor in question's being added, with one intervening edit. If it is a "smart edit filter" bug that's doing that, its a doozy. My best guess is it was an edit conflict that was ignored. JoeSperrazza (talk) 23:30, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

From AN/I

Here's the diff I remembered, which prompted me to post this. This came after Dylan Flaherty (talk · contribs) seemed to have erased a comment from another editor (though I'm having trouble locating that diff ATM). Cheers :> Doc talk 00:52, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

On the surface, the circumstances seem different. Moot point, I think, given the editor in question as responded at ANI and the talk page. JoeSperrazza (talk) 01:00, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
I guess the best thing to remember is that there is some sort of "edit conflict" bug out there (as Errant and Boing! said Zebedee confirmed for us), and if the editor vehemently denies purposely erasing another editor's post on a high-profile page like AN/I, it's very possible that it was in fact inadvertent. Dylan was already in quite a bit of hot water when he "did" his, and it made no sense for him to deny it if he had done it on purpose. So it's not an isolated incident we're talking about here. Cheers :> Doc talk 01:11, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
