WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Hungary Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (Hungary Sasata (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by New South Wales Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. It is possible that I have clinched this debate. Take a look. I don't know how such tings are closed. And whether, if we settle this one, it can be used as a precedent. There are many, many pages that should be merged, or reorganized to a modern city with subsidiary links to previous eras of settlement. Romanization for words of English origin

On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).

Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.

One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.

What this invitation is:

  • You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.

What this invitation is not:

  • This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
  • This is not a vote on compromises either.

Oded Brigade

File:OdedBrigade.svg is much better than the fuzzy piece of crap I found and uploaded. I was deliberately using a low-resolution version, not knowing the ins-and-outs of copyright law in Israel, but it seems that was copyright paranoia. You speak Hebrew, right? I could find some traces of Oded being active as a reserve unit today, but nothing good in English and machine translation of Hebrew is less than perfect. You might be able to find some sources to bring the article more up to date than 1956. Fences&Windows 12:09, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Question

I am in a discussion about a truly minor article about a project sponsored directly by Hassan Nasrallah and Hezbollah. I used "terrorist" along with "paramilitary" and "political" as descriptors of Hezbollah. The other editor removed the word terrorist and wrote, "calling them terrorists is not NPOV unless we have a RS indicating that they call themselves terrorists"? Can this possibly be Misplaced Pages policy? Because I don't think that a terrorist group that self-describes as terrorists? Thank you.AMuseo (talk) 11:57, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

List of Israeli musical artists

I did this whole bunch of work to remove the non notable entries (those who weren't in the Hebrew or English Wikis) but I too understand why you reverted me. I wasn't aware of this problem when I started working on the article. But I think it's manageable and the "he" links can be removed, or added to a red link to english. What do you think ? WikiCup 2010 August newsletter

We have our final eight! The best of luck to those who remain. A bumper newsletter this week as we start our home straight.

  • Pool A's winner was Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions). Awarded the top score overall this round, Sturmvogel_66 writes primarily on military history, favouring Naval warfare.
  • Pool B's winner was New South Wales Casliber (submissions). Awarded the top score for featured articles this round, Casliber writes primarily on natural sciences, especially botany and ornithology.
  • Pool A's close second was Hungary Sasata (submissions). Awarded the top score for featured pictures this round, Sasata writes primarily on natural sciences, favouring mycology.
  • Pool B's close second was Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Awarded the top score for good articles and topics this round, ThinkBlue primarily writes content related to television and film, including 30 Rock.
  • The first wildcard was New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions). Awarded the top score for did you knows and valued pictures this round, TonyTheTiger writes on a number of topics, including baseball, American football and Chicago.
  • The second wildcard was White Shadows (submissions). Someone who has helped the Cup behind the scenes all year, White Shadows said "I'm still in shock that I made it this far" and writes primarily on Naval warfare, especially U-boats.
  • The third wildcard was Connecticut Staxringold (submissions). Awarded the top score for featured lists and topics this round, Staxringold primarily writes on sport and television, including baseball and 30 Rock.
  • The fourth wildcard was William S. Saturn (submissions). Entering the final eight only on the final day of the round, William S. Saturn writes on a number of topics, mostly related to Texas.

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Alberta Resolute (submissions) was not far behind. Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Toronto Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Norway Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. New page by an absolute ignorant!

{{helpme}} Dear Ynhockey, I hope that so far you have survived my ambitious attempt to put a new page (Oz Almog) on Misplaced Pages. Just take into consideration it took me 3 days to decipher how to contact you! Please, can you help me improving the page?! I was adding and adding and adding citations, and cleaning and cleaning... nothing seems to suffice, although at this point it seems that this page has more citations than any other. I will do the final proof-reading myself, and very soon, but this notability issue is puzzling me - I mean, this artist had more than 50 solo exhibitions, there is hundreds of articles about his art (a small fraction is in on-line reading section)... No doubt he is notable enough, but it seems that the problem is in my lack of abilities (or maybe it's because he is a Holonian?!). Pls advise! Question

Hello, Ynhockey. I recently noticed the page called "Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Israel‎" and commented on three specific terror incidents against Israel that have since gone kaput. However, at one of these I read where you commented that the "List of Palestinian terror events" would soon be gone and indeed it was. Does this mean that there is no place in Misplaced Pages where I can see a list of terror events perpetrated against Israel by the Palestinians? I am just wondering. Notification of WP:ARBPIA

As a result of an arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee has acknowledged long-term and persistent problems in the editing of articles related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, broadly understood. As a result, the Committee has enacted broad editing restrictions, described here and below.

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor working in the area of conflict if, despite being warned, that editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Misplaced Pages, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process.
  • The sanctions imposed may include blocks of up to one year in length; bans from editing any page or set of pages within the area of conflict; bans on any editing related to the topic or its closely related topics; restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors; or any other measures which the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor in question shall be given a warning with a link to this decision; and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently WP:AE), or the Committee.

These editing restrictions may be applied to any editor for cause, provided the editor has been previously informed of the case. This message is to so inform you. This message does not necessarily mean that your current editing has been deemed a problem; this is a template message crafted to make it easier to notify any user who has edited the topic of the existence of these sanctions.

Generally, the next step, if an administrator feels your conduct on pages in this topic area is disruptive, would be a warning, to be followed by the imposition of sanctions (although in cases of serious disruption, the warning may be omitted). Hopefully no such action will be necessary.

1973 Arab-Israeli War

I think, that politics and religion should be separated as much as possible. The term "1973 Arab-Israeli war" is a valid alternative for "Y-K war". The combination of "Y-K" and "war" is necessary for someone, who wants information about the mentioned war, because it's the most common name, but not not for someone, who wants information about Y-K. And if someone wants to read about the mentioned war (but typed only Y.K.), then the link would still be obvious! (And I hope, that as the years go bye, fewer and fewer people will want to read about the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.)

Per your note on my talk page, this is not an error, this is an intentional redirect as mandated by policy at WP:INTDABLINK, to prevent the page from showing up at the list of pages requiring repair. This prevents our hard-working disambiguators from wasting literally thousands of hours checking and rechecking intentional links among the approximately 900,000 disambig links requiring repair. Help on my article EarlySense

Dear Ynhockey, You gave me some help when I started writing my article on a company I wrote on - EarlySense, and referenced me to do some cleanup which I did (I hope). It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Misplaced Pages itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Almost every other building list is called list of tallest buildings in... I've never seen an article listing only buildings first, then only having a small table at the bottom, list one place with four smokestacks, and being named as list of tallest structures in, not even buildings and structures in. As I have no intention to wage editing wars, I believe you would prefer to correct it yourself, after you have mistakenly reverted my correction: "corps" in IDF has nothing to do with air or sea, as you have noted, it is "גיס", and as such is headed by aluf, and not by tat-aluf. Yes, I understand that "corps" can have another meaning, but in the specific context of the article this usage would not be correct. The article specifies which ranks correspond to holding commanding posts over specific military formations (and see he-iw there), such as battalion, brigade, division, branch etc. Unlike "gayis", "hayil" is not a military formation, it is rather a coordinating unit for certain military professions, hence in the specified context a reasonable reader should suppose that the word "corps" means a "gayis" formation. -- Prokurator11 (talk) 23:06, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know, they did. Palestine was the one and only English name for the Hebrew word Eretz Yisra'el among Jews at the time. In the old days we wrote "verified" after {{DYKtick}}, meaning that we'd verified the source and the other attributes of the article. So, in reviewing my first submitted hook in several years (I used to do it a lot before working on my book two years ago forced me to give it up because it was taking too much time), I used old terminology, and since I realized I'd have to make use of my Russian-language skills I decided to indicate my acceptance with that word, in that language. Depopulation

Hi, to your question: Khalidi uses "depopulation" as a general term in the whole book (I do not have the hard-copy but I see excerpts online). I cannot check what words exactly he used for Dayr Rafat, except for "overrun". Benny Morris talks about expulsion (of some of the residents at least).

I used expelled as it is much more clear than "depopulated" ("To reduce sharply the population of, as by disease, war, or forcible relocation." - ) - it is too general and invokes imagination. In the case of Dayr (Deir) Rafat the only depopulation source claimed is expulsion: no epidemics, battles involving casualties, etc. are reported. So I thought it would be clearer this way.

If it's important to stick to the wording of the particular source cited, than it should be "depopulated". But I think this word is misleading for a lot of people (e.g., refer to Misplaced Pages's advise not to use the word "claim").

Maybe, a good rewording conveying the original meaning would be: "no residents remained in the village after the war". What do you think?

Dear Ynhockey, Due to illness I was unable to contribute much in improving the quality of article about Template:Oz Almog, but you were really helpful and I appreciate it a lot. I hold the copyrights as it was stated: I personally photographed all the images that were uploaded on the page and I have permission by the author (i.e. Oz Almog) to use them freely on the web for non-commercial purposes. WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
