Serene Branson is a news reporter for CBS Los Angeles news.
Career
Serene is a two time Emmy nominee and the recipient of the Frank Shakespeare Award for Outstanding Achievement in Journalism.
Serene previously worked in a CBS affiliate station in Sacramento, where she had the opportunity to cover state politics and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. She was one of only a handful of media witnesses chosen to watch the execution of convicted killer Clarence Ray Allen at San Quentin State prison. Serene also landed an exclusive interview with one of the few sexually violent predators released from the Atascadero State Mental Hospital. She has covered some of California’s largest natural disasters including wildfires and floods.
Serene started her career as an intern at KCAL 9. She has also worked as a reporter/anchor in Palm Springs and a reporter in Santa Barbara.
2011 Grammy Awards Incident
Serene became the subject of intense popular interest following her inexplicable inability to articulate herself during her coverage of the 53rd Grammy Awards in February, 2011. The incident involved Serene stammering for approximately 10 seconds without recovery during a live cross for 'backstage coverage'. Following her comments, the station switched to the pre-recorded footage of the Awards that Serene was attempting to introduce.
Videos of the incident quickly appeared on the video sharing website YouTube, and within hours of the event's occurance it had gone viral via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
What Serene had intended to say remains unclear.
Serene was subsequently hospitalized for what doctors suspect was a stroke suffered on-air while attempting to deliver her stand-up.
