A fact from LOT Polish Airlines Flight 165 hijacking appeared on Misplaced Pages's Main Page in the Did you know column on 26 July 2009 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows: Did you know ... that an East German defector hijacked a Polish plane in 1978 to escape to West Germany? Relation between Tiede and Ruske

According to a documentary on german television this evening they weren't girl/boyfriend. They were just colleagues I think. (the following is my guess) Perhaps they faked a relationship to travel as a family without causing suspicion. --Svenalbert (talk) 21:37, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

Terrorism?

Should this article really be under WikiProject Terrorism? Sure this was a hijacking, but not terrorism by popular definition (and a hijacking does not automatically equate to terrorism). Terrorism is an act of extreme violence utilized for political gain. According to the page, these two individuals were neither violent (leading to injury or death) nor acting under a certain political dogma. Were they allowed to stay in West Germany?

Yes, they were. Under West German law, both were German citizens. West Germany recognized that some parts of Germany were not parts of the Federal Republic, but did not recognize different German citizenships, but considered all German citizens, whether in West German, East Germany, or West Berlin, to be simply German citizens.
