Cystathionine is an intermediate in the synthesis of cysteine.

An excess in the urine is called cystathioninuria.

Cysteine metabolism. Cystathionine beta synthase catalyzes the upper reaction and cystathionine gamma-lyase catalyzes the lower reaction.
