In the mid-2000s, Arindam embarked on an aggressive advertising campaign to promote IIPM. Full-page advertisements were published in major newspapers, with his photograph displayed prominently.<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/> The advertisements described the perks given to students and featured the slogan: “Dare to Think Beyond the ]”. Arindam's company spent roughly US$ 8 million on advertising in 2006, but paid no income tax in 2005 or 2006, resulting in an investigation by the Indian tax authorities.<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/>

A blogger and an ] employee named Gaurav Sabnis discussed the article in a critical blog post titled ''The fraud that is IIPM''.

Arindam, who later described the article as "the world's most stupid article"<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/>, responded swiftly. IIPM wrote to Gaurav Sabnis, threatening to sue him, and obtained a court injunction against the original JAM article. JAM took the article offline temporarily. IIPM also approached Gaurav's employer IBM (from whom IIPM had sourced the laptops for its students), asking them to pressurize Gaurav to take down his blog post. Gaurav resigned from his job after IIPM threatened that its students would march to the IBM head office and burn their laptops in protest. The incident led to strong criticism of IIPM in the blogosphere, with many bloggers challenging the claims made by IIPM in its advertisements.<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/>

The story was later reported by the mainstream press. '']'', for which Rashmi Bansal was a columnist, accepted Arindam's request to cover the story in an unbiased manner. The entire episode turned into a public relations disaster for Arindam Chaudhuri, and put a dent in his reputation.<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/>
By 2007, Arindam had achieved great wealth and prominence, but also attracted criticism as a fraud and scamster.<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/> He has stated that he is "hated by a lot of people" because he challenged "the establishment" and the elite with his media business, and because he competed with the “mafia” of management education in India.<ref name="caravan_sweet_smell"/>
