Kovilpatti (கோவில்பட்டி in Tamil) is located at 9.17°N 77.87°E. It has an average elevation of 106 metres (347 feet). Kovilpatti is a fast growing town in Tuticorin District with prominent commercial and industrial activity, including a large number of match factories, textile mills and factories manufacturing Fire Works. It is the gateway for entrants to Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts from the north and west, located 100 km south of Madurai city, 55 km north of Tirunelveli Town and 60 km north-west of Tuticorin. Kovilpatti is situated on the National Highway No.7 which connects Varanasi in the North and Kanyakumari in the South. The town lies approximately 130 m above mean sea Level, which gives a unique geographical look to this town. It has a small hill to its south east known as Swarna Kathiresa Malai. The deity is Lord Muruga.

Kovilpatti is an Assembly Constitution and was part of Sivakasi (Lok Sabha constituency)|Sivakasi Lok Sabha Constituency]] in Tamil Nadu. As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the delimitation of constituencies in the Tamil Nadu, the Kovilpatti assembly constituency has been a segment of the new Thoothukkudi (Lok Sabha constituency). Delimitation was made effective for all elections in the state of Tamil Nadu that is held on or after 19 February 2008.

S. Alagarsamy (Template:Lang-ta; 5 August 1926 – 6 March 2009) was elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly for 5 terms from 1967 to 1991 to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as an Communist Party of India candidate from Kovilpatti constituency in 1967, 1971, 1977, 1980 and 1989 elections.


Political career

He first contested for Madras State Assembly in 1957 and continued to contest in all subsequent State General Assembly Elections till 1989 from Kovilpatti constituency Prior to that he contested for Unified Tirunelveli Jilla Board in 1952.

The then unified Tirunelveli district consisted of the present Tirunelveli , Tuticorin, Kannayakumari Districts and part of Malabar and Ramnad District. He was leader of the CPI Legislative Group from 1971 till 1991 in The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Thiru C.N.Annadurai was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, when he was the Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1967 and subsequently he continued to be M.L.A , when Thiru V.R. Nedunchezhiyan , Thiru. M. Karunanidhi and Thiru M. G. Ramachandran , were the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu. He was well respected by the all Chief Ministers and other political leaders accross party lines.

He was affectionatlely called “ Annachi “ ( Template:Lang-ta ) by his thousands of followers and others . He gained respect and great loyal following due to his leadership ,honesty , simplicity , loyalty , hardwork, and openess. These qualities enabled him to win the Assembly Election continuously irespective of the political waves.
