Why do you want users to comment on top?

It is common practice on Misplaced Pages for users to post new comments at the bottoms of pages. In fact, all article talk pages need to be formatted in a way that new posts are added on the bottom. Having users create their posts at the top just confuses matters. In addition, clicking the New section button, which most users do when creating a new section, forces the comment to appear at the bottom of the page. Ryan Vesey (talk) 21:30, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

The "End" key on your keyboard will probably move your browser to the bottom of the page. All automated notifications by bots will be at the bottom and many editors will probably overlook or ignore your request, so you may have to check both the top and bottom for new messages if you keep the request. Top posts can also cause confusion when others read your talk page or when it is archived. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:26, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I sincerely and deeply apologize if I sound rude (I had a very bad day today), but why do you guys care? And PrimeHunter, is the END key the backspace, or what? A comment by a person who has been editing Misplaced Pages since June 18, 2011. (talk) 01:55, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Other people will also read your talk page and may overlook a relevant discussion or be confused, or spend extra time satisfying your unusual request. See also WP:TOPPOST. Most keyboards have a key saying "End". It is not backspace. See End key. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:41, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't have the END key, then. Mine doesn't have the extra keys on the right side. A comment by a person who has been editing Misplaced Pages since June 18, 2011. (talk) 01:55, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
If you're using a smaller keyboard such as a laptop, the “end” key is usually accessed by holding down both the Fn (function) + PgDn (page down) keys. Calmer Waters 05:05, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Alright. Got it. Thanks. A few grammar errors fixed in CalmerWater's comment. Sent from my iPod Touch. A comment by a person who has been editing Misplaced Pages since June 18, 2011. (talk) 05:17, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Hmmmm, don't believe I've ever had someone copy-edit a talk page message of mine before ;) Ironic; my using of your instead you're after just reading Piledhigheranddeeper cleaver pet peeves on the misuse of the apostrophe earlier in the day. Take care. Calmer Waters 05:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Ummm...CalmerWaters is that supposed to be an insult? A comment by a person who has been editing Misplaced Pages since June 18, 2011. (talk) 21:42, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Remember assume good faith. He was saying it was ironic that he made an apostrophe error right after reading a page which specifically addressed the issue of apostrophe errors. There is an essay I read once, about assuming that things were not personal attacks or insults, but I cannot find it right now. Ryan Vesey (talk) 00:53, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Of course not. I was making lite of the situation, hence the wink. I was taken a bit back by it through. I believe you had the best of intentions, but is generally something that is discouraged. If that seems at all odd, think of it this way: changing the text of someone's comment, is kind of like putting words in someone's mouth. It may be what they intended to say, but it is still not what they said. Saying they have error ed is fine; however, changing their comments, well....I've seen flame wars over someone correcting someone's else comments on a project page, that later moved to ANI, and even came back to bite them later on at their RFA. Discussion space is a little different than the main space. For example, you may get an occasional new user or IP that does not speak English as their native language asking for help. Some of our greatest FA editors my make an occasional slip of the keyboard, typing a quick reply. Change their comment and they may unleash a fury of unpleasantness upon you. Anyways, just my opinion and observations from the last couple of years here. Take care. Kindly Calmer Waters 01:01, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Block

  • I'm glad that the mess has been sorted out at last, and I hope your future as a Wikipedian will run more smoothly. Feel free to let me know if there are other problems. Thanks for you kind messages on my talk page. One word of advice: it is usual to post new talk page sections at the bottom, and so that is where people are likely to look for them. This time I saw your message at the top of my talk page, but there have been times when I haven't noticed one for quite a while. Much safer to post at the bottom. Formatting error

What is the formatting error you referenced and needed help with? Ryan Vesey (talk) 01:00, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

It's the yellow box that says {{{1}}}. A comment by a person who has been editing Misplaced Pages since June 18, 2011. (talk) 01:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

I figured out the problem, please give me a couple of minutes to fix it. Ryan Vesey (talk) 01:08, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Template problem again

I'm sorry for any inconvenience but I've got that template problem again. If you could...Thank you very much. It's the one with the stop-hand nuvola image thing.

Fixed the image template again. Just as before, the problem occurred because of equal signs in external links. Using 1= before the text is a workaround so it won't cause the template to act weird. This time it could not be placed right after the notice| mark. It needs to be placed before the actual text that appears in the template. Ryan Vesey (talk) 04:17, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Smiley You're welcome! I looked :) Thanks for making my day better :) Ryan Vesey (talk) 00:18, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Remember to be courteous

Hey, I just noticed this edit. There are two problems here. First, unless it is necessary, you should refrain from commenting on old discussions. Your edit didn't add a lot as the asker already had it explained to him that he was in the wrong place. People make this mistake all the time, and they need to be pointed to another topic gently. Second, remember to be civil. It wasn't a big issue, but saying "leave" could possibly discourage that person from editing. I removed the word "leave" from your edit. Ryan Vesey (talk) 00:27, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking for a second. Thanks for the reminder. A comment by a person who has been editing Misplaced Pages since October 28, 2010. (talk) 00:39, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
I also found some edits here. While these are all good posts (although I don't really like "so we don't have to deal with you), they are very unlikely to be read as they are in the archive. I liked how you tried to assist a user by reminding him to sign his posts; however, a better spot for that would have been on his talk page where he is more likely to see it. Ryan Vesey (talk) 00:35, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Talk page organization

I would like to help you keep your talk page organized how you like it. Would you prefer it if I posted my new comments at the top of my section or the bottom?

Bottom is fine. You can create a new section here with 2+ “equals signs” in the heading if you like. Thanks again and sorry for the confusion on the comments thing.
