A helmet worn for riding horses. This type of helmet is specially designed to protect the rider from a fall off a horse, or a kick if the horse should get frightened. The classic riding helmet is made of black velvet, with a brim. Many new riders wear a "training" or "schooling" helmet while learning to ride, since it is more casual. This type of helmet has more similarity to a bicycle helmet. People riding on trails usually wear this type of helmet as well. The classic riding helmet is modeled after the look of the hunt cap, which offered little or no protection to the rider of the horse. Many new riders feel that riding helmets are not "cool" and do not want to wear them. Certain horse riding competitions do not allow for the wearing of helmets, or require a certain kind, such as the classic hunt cap style. There are many brands of riding helmets to choose from, but it is important to choose a well known brand. Riding helmets come in a variety of styles to fit with the needs of riders.
