Information Needed on How My Corrections Have Been Deleted

I just tried, for the first time, to do a major edit on an article, titled "John C. Cremony." I had just finished his "Life Among the Apaches* and wanted more information on the author. I found a very misleading article, and corrected it, quoting from the "Life" to prove my point. Much to my surprise, my correction was deleted, and the original article reinserted, within seconds of my post. Thinking that perhaps I had not correctly posted my revisions, I rewrote them and posted them a second time, only to again have the original article substituted for mine almost immediately. Although my contribution, from LosAngeles08, is listed in the "discussion" section, I could not access it.

Could somebody tell me what is going on? Can the author of an article somehow automatically delete any corrections or additions as soon as they are posted? Is my version accessible? How do I write an account of my experience that will inform readers who consult the article, but cannot be immediately deleted? In other words, can I write something for the "discussion" section that is not a correction of the article itself? You can see the article history here, which shows other users' reasons for reverting your changes. The other editors believed that your additions were dubious, original research ("OR"), and not supported by the sources cited. I'd recommend starting a discussion at Talk:John C. (edit conflict) The other editors' undoing of your edits have comments such as "not in the source, OR" and "Reverted addition of dubious unsourced content". I don't know anything about the topic or the sources, but sounds like either various editors disagree on the meaning of sources, or at least different editors using different sources are finding different information. It happens a lot in my experience, since not everyone has access to the same sources and definitely don't all have the experience to understand them all. Perfect example of the sort of dispute that can be hashed out on the article's talk-page. Things like "the article says X but source A says B instead; what is the basis for saying X?" would be a good starting-point there. Then others can explain why X is viable as-is, or help adjust the writing to agree with all sources ("A says B whereas C says X"), or maybe find more sources to break the tie or help re-interpret A itself. In addition, the tone of your writing was not appropriately encyclopaedic; it offered an opinion, and thus did not conform to a neutral point-of-view. You are offering an interpretation of the book, based on your own ideas, which is not permissible on Misplaced Pages. I'm confused...that talk-page comment does not look like a legal threat. Or are you threatening legal action if it's not removed? It's rare that we would remove partial comments except under extreme circumstances, and it's generally sufficient to remove the whole message (but again, I don't yet understand the severity of the situation you are seeing). As I understand it, the user the quoted comment was directed at is threatening Alxxthegeek with legal action because of the accusation of . Presumably the threat is made off wiki in Australia. Alxxthegeek has given info about work which could be used to track somebody down. I find it hard to believe anybody would use resourses on actually taking legal action over the quote. The name mentioned in the comment in question matches a name involved in the SPI as part of a series of abusive edits by that sockfarm on the same topic as the comment in question. • If I understand correctly, I think PrimeHunter has it right, and this is a sockpuppet bullying Alxxthegeek with obnoxious legal threats. The comments were already blanked a year ago, so that can't be what they're asking. While I can't imagine the threat having any basis, I think it would ease Alxx's mind if we revdel'd or oversighted them, and I'd be inclined to do so (doesn't really fit any of the revdel criteria, but nobody's going to mind, right?). Alxx, would it be enough to wp:revdel them, so the general public can't see the text? If so, I'll do that for you. If you are referring to a claim in Misplaced Pages then please say which page it is on. Space Shuttle Columbia disaster was February 1, 2003 over Texas during re-entry. Express card slot.

I have a hp laptop which has a slot on the side about 50mm wide. According to the "Help" section it is for an Express Card. There is no information as to what an Express Card is or does. tool to analyse breakdown of edits, etc

Just wondering if there's a tool available that will list by percentage (for example) of how many edits that I have made have been to a certain page, or how many times in total I've edited there, that sort of thing. I'm far more active on certain pages than I am on others, and was just wondering how much of my time they actually take up, compared to many single instance edits - to remove vandalism, etc. a_man_alone (talk) 08:26, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

One tool is "X!'s Edit Counter" - to get details, you'd have to create the page User:A man alone/EditCounterOptIn.js to 'opt in' - it doesn't matter what you put on the page, it just has to exist. And then, the tool will show your "Top edited pages", which will probably cover what you want, here.

There's also a website (unaffiliated with Misplaced Pages), http://en.wikichecker.com/ - that shows "Frequently edited pages" if you click the thingy to expand it, but it defaults to just the most recent 500 edits. If you do "Analyze all edits of this user", it'll show all of them - here.

Yet another is http://wikidashboard.appspot.com/ - if you go to a user page, it lists the top-5 edited articles, and you can choose 10,20,50.

Anti-vandalism program

Eh, I have seen a lot of problems with STiki. Try using Lupin's Anti-vandal tool combined with Twinkle. You need to add the code into your common.js file and then the tools will appear in your toolbox. Click filter recent changes to start the process. Ryan Vesey Review me! 17:53, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

I use Twinkle when I do anti-vandal work. I have never tried STiki, but I have seen problems with the more automated tools. I just go to recent changes. I like to look at each edit individually in my browser and decide what to do with it. Then I use Twinkle to revert and warn if appropriate.. GB fan please review my editing 18:02, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Parent company

Hi there,

I was trying to create a page for our company called Boston's the Gourmet Pizza. Our parent company, Boston Pizza, is in Canada. When they expanded the business to the states, the name was changed to Boston's the Gourmet Pizza. I created a page for us yesterday, linking the Canadian page (which mentions us and uses our logo) to our page. This morning I went to check back and make some changes on our page and saw that my creation had been removed and dubbed "Copyright infringement." I'm trying to figure out why I can't create our separate company a separate page. This has happened twice now and its frustrating as we are our own company, with our own identity, our own history and our own future. Please help as we are trying to expand our brand online and would love to include a Misplaced Pages page in that particular portfolio.

Vauxhall Page

My edit to add Lord Voldemort to the list of Noteable people for the Vauxhall page was denied because he "is not a real person". He may not technically be a living person, but he is known around the world as the darkest Wizard of all time. If he is not a real person then why does he have his own Misplaced Pages page? I added a reference (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, page 232) which outlines that Tom Riddle (Voldemort's given name) is from that area of London. Please reconsider this. It is obviously a link to his Misplaced Pages page where people can learn that he is a character in Rowling's book if they choose to do so. Please reconsider adding Lord Voldemort to the list of Noteable people section of the Vauxhall Misplaced Pages page.

For the record, the diary is from Vauxhall Road, London(Just dug it out to check), not specifically Vauxhall itself, and there doesn't appear to be a Vauxhall road in Vauxhall. Also just because the diary is from there doesn't mean he is--Jac16888 20:33, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

If the original work is clear about it (and I agree with Jac that this is not a good example), I see no reason why the work itself would not suffice. Victor Frankenstein begins the book with "I am by birth a Genevese; and my family is one of the most distinguished of that republic"; that's good enough for me, unless you're going to argue he's an unreliable narrator. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:00, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

A decent example of where a fictional reference is appropriate in a real-world article might be re. Platform 9¾ at King's Cross. But that is sufficiently documented; has enough references to mean inclusion is appropriate.

For "Vauxhall Road", a) there is not such coverage, b) "Vauxhall Road" is not Vauxhall. So to me, it is obvious in this case that it doesn't belong.

In the book/film, there's a shop called "Winstanley's Bookstore & Stationers" at 422 Vauxhall Road, where Tom Riddle bought a diary. But to cover that minor detail in an unrelated article would be excessive. Consider just how many fictional books mention places in London? If we added them all (to the location articles), they'd overwhelm them. So unless the coverage is much more significant (e.g. 221B Baker Street), it shouldn't be included.  Chzz  ►  23:14, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Commons PD graphic is backwards

The Issue: Prohibition symbol is supposed to have the diagonal from upper-left to lower-right, but the image referenced above has it in the wrong orientation.

Whoever made it should fix it. I was trying to find the "official" location of that graphic, but there is so much stuff here on Misplaced Pages that I couldn't find it. That seems to have come from File:PD-icon.png, which was created in 2005 by Duesentrieb (talk · contribs) (as you can see, on the file page). You can probably contact that person on Commons:User talk:Duesentrieb.

It was created by a Misplaced Pages editor; it is just an icon; whether the slash is \ or / is a matter of personal preference, I think, and I don't see a compelling reason to change it; plus, lots of images copy the same style. Maybe it comes from the idea of Derestriction signs.

If you did wish to discuss the format of icons used on image / templates though, it'd probably be best to do that on Commons:Village pump (because "Commons" stores all the images used on all Sister wikis), or our own Misplaced Pages:Village pump (idea lab).  Chzz  ►  01:25, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Do you mean the page July 30? If so, then the following will explain. If you meant a different article, I'm sorry I misunderstood. So;

A wedding anniversary is not normally considered notable enough for inclusion on day-pages; see Misplaced Pages:Days of the year. So, it probably can't be included; sorry.

To explain why 'edit' is missing though; the page July 30 has, unfortunately, had to be semi-protected so that only registered users can edit it. If you click 'View Source' (which replaces 'edit'), you can see info on "Why is the page protected?" and "What can I do?"

You could register then wait until you had been around for a short time (4 days/10 edits), but quicker is to place a {{editsemiprotected}} request in a new section on the article discussion page - Talk:July 30 - you'll see some previous requests there.

But, re. that specific anniversary, I don't think there would be agreement to add it; sorry. Chzz  ►  02:15, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Plus, I see now, that the wedding has not yet happened - and so, it wouldn't be appropriate, because we do not predict events before they happen.

The best approach would probably be - when it's happened and there is coverage - to add to Zara Phillips, and/or Mike Tindall. That would be the place to request protection, but Misplaced Pages prides itself on being an encyclopedia which anyone can edit; so the people at Requests for page protection would not protect a page with such a low rate of vandalism. It's very hard for us to maintain an unreferenced article; we cannot tell which facts are correct, and which or not. That's why we insist on references - see WP:V and WP:REFB.  Chzz  ►  05:26, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

That should help considerably in trying to maintain it.

There's still some things needing improvement - but, Shumeyko, please be careful about the conflict of interest; it's fine to remove any junk, but for other things please suggest the changes on the discussion page - Talk:Behnaz Sarafpour, and if you add {{Request edit}} it should get attention; please see WP:BESTCOI. Also worth reading WP:BLP.

It is unlikely that the article would be protected at this time, because there isn't enough evidence of persistent/ongoing vandalism to warrant that - and this is supposed to be "The Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit", so protection is a last-ditch effort (and, normally, short-term).

My IP adress account was blocked recently by User:Brandon. The reason for the block was listed as Opera mini proxy. I was using my Opera mini on my phone when the block took place. Problems with the article feedback tool

On the article Remember December, I removed my ratings since I didn't really want to rate a page I personally improved. But then, all the ratings turned to 1 and even if I rate it with 5, the "average" i still 1, and there's only 5 ratings. Prior to removing my ratings, it had around 4. Table messes up all sections below it

In the Ben Gurion International Airport article there is a table in the traffic volume section which floats into the next level 2 section (access). The way the table flows, it totally messes up all the level 2 sections below it? Is there any way to fix this? But material which is referenced to a reliable source should not be removed. If it is the consensus among interested editors that the subject is notable, then the article will not be deleted. We will take your request very seriously, but I am sure you can understand that we do not delete articles simply on the request of an anonymous request. NEW FONT IS NOT GOOD

Hello, It seems that suddenly the default font for articles in Misplaced Pages has changed from a perfectly readable one, to a bold but very SMALL one. Please be aware that for many readers this is not good, as many of us have trouble reading small fonts. Edit conflicts can occur anytime 2 or more people edit the same page and attempt to save their version of the page. Whether it's a human or a bot is irrelevant, the key thing is that multiple edits are being simultaneously done. On the reference desk were you editing using the Edit button at the top of the page (i.e. had the whole page in edit mode) or where you editing a section by using the Edit link to the right side of a section heading? If you had the entire page open for editing then on popular pages you're highly likely to get edit conflicts, if it was just a section then I think you're just unlucky that time. Did you see the example at the top of WP:Edit Conflict? CaptRik (talk) 09:35, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the 'what ifs' are asking. I've probably been blocked 7 times in a row in passionate talk-page discussions. I doubt anyone can tell you the record, but that editor is probably bald.

Yes, hitting 'save' and then changing your mind is gonna mess you up. I have only rarely succeeded in doing that, and then only because the server was so backed up that the save probably would have failed anyway. Naming a reference

I needed to add more references to some pages in wikipedia. I am able to add the references but am not able to name them. I mean i can type the link to the page in the references but i want to display the title of the link instead of its address.

For Example

then the url

then a space

then the text Misplaced Pages

then the closing square bracket

so you get Misplaced Pages

Minor correction to the point of Primehunter - while many of the referencing conventions do not put the ref itself in the ref section, the WP:LDR method (the one I use all the time and think everyone should adopt) does have the references in the reference section.

One other minor note on terminology - the phrase "giving a reference a name" does not mean the word that shows up in the reference, it means something else. Trouble uploading photo to Commons

When I get to the Commons upload page, after having signed in, it says I am NOT signed in. When I try to sign again, it says that no such user exists, and asks me to create new account. I then tried that, but it says the account already exists. What is the matter?

The most immediate problem is that there are a lot of countries, each of which is a member of several international organisations, and there are also a lot of different international organisations. The organisations of which each country is a member also change every once in a while. To create templates for all of them manually will require a lot of work and a lot of maintenance=a lot of willing volunteers, which you might not be able to call up. Where to ask copyright question about image uploads

A professor who is about to retire wants to donate his slide collection. I suggested digitizing the pictures and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. A section of the slides are historical images of Mexican periodicals, so I wanted to check if there would be copyright problems for those images. Some of these are rare or uncommon images with historical value, so I want to find them a home somewhere.

Mexican copyright law can be downloaded here. It's in Spanish though, which I can't really understand that well. I think Mexico's public domain laws requires author lifetime + 100 years, AFAIK. And:

Title changes (more correctly termed "page moves") are logged automatically. To visit a list of logs for a given page, click the "view logs for this page" link at the top of the article's revision history page. There you can filter the results to only show page move logs. Yes; on an article page, first go to the "History" - if you are using the default skin, that's at the top-right, "View history", next to the search box.

Then click on the small link View logs for this page - which is near the top, just under "".

That will show all logged actions for the page; if there are too many other actions, you can use the drop-down to just show "Move" entries.

You can also go directly to Special:Logs, and put the page name in there.

For example - for the article Kate Middleton, you'd get this.  Chzz  ►  01:19, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Where do I submit a request for an article?

I seem to be going in a circle trying to find the correct link to take me to area where I can submit a request for an article. I can find submitted requests, pending requests, etc., but not a link to a form to submit a request.

If you can write a draft, with some appropriate references, the easiest way is to use WP:WIZARD and, at the end, choose to "Submit for review".

If you just want to put in a request for anyone to write an article, it's Misplaced Pages:Requested articles...but, it has an enormous backlog. So it's better to have a go yourself. See also WP:FIRST.  Chzz  ►  02:07, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
