Bessel Kok (b. 13 December, 1941 in Hilversum, The Netherlands) is a candidate for president of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. The election will be held in June, 2006 in Torino, Italy during the World Chess Olympiad in the same stadium that was just used for the Winter Olympics.
For more than 20 years since the mid-1980s, Bessel Kok has been the leading chess organizer in Europe. He is a wealthy and successful businessman who backs his mega chess events with his own millions.
Almost every major chess event held in Central Europe for the past 20 years has involved Bessel Kok. He was also the moneyman behind the Grandmaster Association and the Professional Chess Players Association.
In the coming election, almost every major chess playing country in Europe has committed to vote for Bessel Kok. The current FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is expected to get the vote of many of the African, Arab and Asian delegates. The vote of South and Central America is unknown.
