This page is a forum for requesting co-examination of copyright and licensing of content with other Wikipedians before it is included in a Misplaced Pages article, or to request such co-examination of copyright and licensing of an image before the image is uploaded to Misplaced Pages.

For problems already existing in Misplaced Pages use Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems.

Using this page

Requesting examination

  1. Post a message defining the request on the talk page of the article where you propose to add content with unclear copyright.
  2. Add {{copyrightexamination}} at the top of the request message on the talk page.
  3. Add a link pointing at the talk page to top of the List of open requests found below on this page, including a short description of the problem.

Answering to a request

  • If you are confident that the content in question can freely be included in the article (considering the nature and location of the source, the extent of the use, and other Fair Use considerations), you are encouraged to add the content directly to the article. If you do so, post a short explanation on the talk page.
  • If you believe that the content in question cannot legally be included, post a summary of your analysis to the article's talk page. Another editor may support your analysis, or come to a different conclusion.

In any event, copyright examinations performed by editors based on requests on this page are not final or definitive, and all material in articles is subject to further review, after it appears, through Misplaced Pages copyright problem procedures.

Rejecting a faulty request

Sometimes requests are mistakenly posted here for content already included in Misplaced Pages. In such cases it is important to inform the user who posted the request and keep request list clean. Rejection is done by

  1. Moving the request to List of requests which don't belong here section
  2. Changing copyrightexamination template to {{Copyrightexamination-rejected}} on the target article talk-page.

Ending a valid request

When the content has been included, or it has been made clear that content can not be included, a request may be ended. Ending is done by

  1. Changing the template on the article talk-page to either
  2. Moving related discussion from this page to the article talk-page. (The discussion should always be on the article talk page, but this is sadly not always the case)
  3. Removing the entry from List of open requests.

List of open requests

  • - External Links violate copyright rules, however, there seems to be a biasness to what links should and should not stay posted.
  • Image talk:Bradman out for a duck.jpg (removed from article Don Bradman) - This photo's source is the State Library of South Australia . The page states that the image is out of copyright. The photo was however apparently taken in London (the description says ..played at the Oval, London, on 14, 16, 17 and 18 August 1948.). The original source is not stated and not known. Would Australian copyright expiry pre-1955 be applicable here? If not would this still be under copyright anywhere else? -- Iantalk 18:05, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Talk:Tule fog. I have a question about this image ]. The website () allows any educational use, but "not for any direct or indirect commercial purpose or advantage." To me this reads very similar to the policy at the Smithsonian Institute, and we allow use of their images. BlankVerse 10:21, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

List of requests which don't belong here

Here are requests that are placed on this page by accident and should be elsewhere. Most common reason for a request ending up on this list is that the unclear content is already uploaded to wikipedia and/or placed in the target article. Most of these should probably go into Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems.

  • Talk:Sergei Ivanov. One of the wikipedians accuses me of violating copyrights in this article. I told him that the text of the article is my personal translation of the Russian original text at www.compromat.ru (you will see the link at the bottom of the page). Personal translations do not represent a violation of copyrights, am I right? Please, advise. KNewman 14:28, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
    • Yes, they do, because your text is a derivative of the original text. Since you wrote the translation, you also hold some rights, but they do not replace the rights of the original author. You need to actually rewrite the text if you want to stay in the clear. Schutz 16:18, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
