In msn groups, there is a small community of people called 'roleplayers', who have been creating their sites for many years. The most influential msn group roleplayer in terms of site design goes by the name of Strife. Strife created one of the gretest roleplay sites to ever hit msn, entitled FF7 Fortress. This site lasted for a year before it finally shut down. Another big success in msn groups was the creation of a site entitled 'Arachnid Designs'. This was a graphic site that most of msn groups' elite spent their time. This too eventually closed.

Since then, many new sites have opened to big success, and more are always under production as each day passes. The most recent sites that have created a stir in this community are .6 Reloaded, Create, Tommorrow Winter, and Rival Schools: Justice Network.

MSN Groups (previously known as MSN Communities) is a site created by Microsoft. It allows you to create 'groups' and join them too. In order to create or join a group you need to be a registered member of the .NET service, used by a variety of MSN services. People already using Hotmail may use their sign-in name for MSN Groups as well. With MSN Groups you can interact with people from all over the world and find other people who have similar interests to you.

Features

  • Create custom web pages.
  • Create message boards.
  • Create documents folders.
  • Create photo albums.
  • Create a calendar (using MSN Hotmail's Calendar service).
  • Create lists.

When you create a custom web page you can use some HTML. MSN limits some HTML from being used for your security. There are clickable buttons for background colours, text colours, tables, emoticons, fonts, paragraphs, text sizes and more.

Another cool feature is the message boards (forums). Members can post new messages using some HTML. When you create a message it is similar to creating a page except you cannot choose a background unless you are in a table.

Documents folders are handy for storing files such as Word documents and other file formats.

With MSN's photo upload tool it is easy to arrange your photos. You are allowed to host your images there as long as they do not breach the code of conduct.

Organising has never been easier because you can now use the Calendar feature which is in MSN Hotmail as well.

By creating a list you can use it as a 'links' page where members can add their own links or for reviews on books, movies etc.

Themes

'Themes' are applied to an MSN Group when they are placed in a particular category. For example, if a group is placed in the Xbox category the Xbox theme will be applied to it. There are also themes for movies (US), MSN Messenger and Journals.

Limitations

  • 3 MB storage for non-paying members.
  • Pages can only be a certain length/size.
  • 299 message boards max.
  • Pictures in messages 1 MB max.
  • 10 attachments per message which total up to 1 MB or less.
  • 100,000 messages max on message boards.
  • Message board names must contain at least 1 character and no more than 16 characters.
  • Message subjects must contain at least 1 character and no more than 80 characters.

History

  • MSN Groups has previously been known as MSN Homepages and MSN Communities.
  • Storage reduced to 3 MB from 30 MB.
  • All "Mature" and "Adult" groups are to eventually be removed and put on a third-party web site. Recently, around 40 Dutch groups featured minors and so MSN are not allowing any form of sexual content whatsoever on their portal. Creating or changing a group's status to "Mature" or "Adult" will not be possible after October 19. The removal of all "Adult" groups will be processed on November 28 . These group will be moved to World Groups. NOTE: It was said that mature groups would close, this is untrue, as reported officially by MSN to several user feedback. Dates above were changed with no updated information when changes would take effect.
