The game shares some similarities with the board game '']'': the board is shaped similarly, tiles are hexes, and each tile generates resources of a unique type. However, these similarities are only on the surface. The game is more one of managing resources and a complex build tree, and players do not directly compete for resources as they are generated. Unusually for an online browser-based game, tiles continuously generate resources in real-time. For example, if 30 units wood are produced per hour, one is made every 2 minutes rather than 30 on the hour change. | The game shares some similarities with the board game '']'': the board is shaped similarly, tiles are hexes, and each tile generates resources of a unique type. Travian is a MMOG developed in Germany. In Travian, players interact simultaneously competing with thousands of other players in a online virtual ancient world.
Travian is a browser-based game, which is played directly on a website. No downloads, installations or plugins are required. After registration, one can start playing the game without delay. Travian is a free-of-charge game, although extra features and tools can be paid for.
One starts as a chief of a small village, either as martial Teuton, peaceful Gaul or proud Roman. The player's first aim should be production, in order eventually to create new villages as soon as possible. Each tribe has its own advantages and disadvantages and their troop types are very different. So it is important to choose the tribe that fits one's own style of playing.
There are four different types of resources in Travian: wood, clay, iron and crop. Before one expand the village's buildings, one must develop some resource fields to gain new resource supplies.
The game shares some similarities with the board game Settlers of Catan: the board is shaped similarly, tiles are hexes, and each tile generates resources of a unique type. However, these similarities are only on the surface. The game is more one of managing resources and a complex build tree, and players do not directly compete for resources as they are generated. Unusually for an online browser-based game, tiles continuously generate resources in real-time. For example, if 30 units of wood are produced per hour, one is made every 2 minutes rather than 30 on the hour change.
