Scotlandshire is a term sometimes used to denote either the anglicization of Scotland or Scotland's perceived subordinate political relationship with England. By placing the suffix -shire after the nation's name, there is a parody of the early modern tendency to place the word -shire after many ancient Scottish regions, as well as a tongue-in-cheek implication that Scotland has the status of an English county, rather than that of a distinct nation. Hence, the term is very often political in nature, and may bne regarded as pejorative.
Several historic, comital regions of Scotland have at times had the redundant word -shire added:
- Argyll - Argyllshire
- Bute - Buteshire
- Moray - Morayshire
- Ross - Ross-shire
