Freedom of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, scheduled to launch in Southampton, England in late April of 2006, followed by a naming ceremony in early May in New York. At 158,000 tons, the 18-deck ship will accommodate 4,370 people and, according to Royal Caribbean, be the largest cruise ship in existence. At 1,112 feet (339m) long, her top cruising speed will be 21.6 knots (40 km/h). The ship will feature an interactive water park (including the FlowRider onboard wave generator for surfing), a dedicated sports pool (for volleyball, basketball, etc.), and whirlpools which extend from each of the ship's sides. In addition to these luxuries, it will sport a coffee shop which will also sell books, Sorrento's Pizzeria, and a Ben and Jerry's ice-cream shop. Other amenities are to include a rock climbing wall, ice skating rink, Wi-Fi capabilities throughout the ship, flat screen televisions in all staterooms, and cell phone connectivity.
The Freedom of the Seas is being built at the Aker Finnyards drydock in Turku, Finland along with its sister ship, Endeavour of the Seas (scheduled for launch in 2007). A third, unnamed ship of the same class is also scheduled for delivery in 2008.
At this time, Freedom of the Seas is scheduled to sail seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries through 2007 from its departure port of Miami, Florida, USA.
In 2009, the first in a new Genesis class of ships is slated to displace the Freedom class as the world's largest passenger ship.
