The Australian Monarchist League was founded in 1943 to support the role of the Crown in the Australia's constitutional system.

In 1993 it established itself as a totally Australian organisation and removed formal ties with the International Monarchist League. Consequently the National Chairman, Philip Benwell MBE, no longer sits on the International Council.

Membership

The League has approximately 20,000 supporters and some 2,500 members across Australia. The League has recently introduced a six month free trial membership. It has Branches in each State and the ACT and is headquartered in Sydney. All Office Bearers, including its Executive National Chairman, are voluntary.

Recent Activities

The League played an important role in the 'No Republic' campaign during the lead up to Australia's 1999 Republic Referendum. The referendum was defeated with 54.4% of electors voting 'no'.

The League successfully lobbied against changes to the Oath of Office in New South Wales that would have removed references to the Queen. It has indicated that it will consider taking the State Government to the High Court should it continue with current plans to remove allegiance to The Queen.

The League saw the return of photographic portraits of the Queen displayed in Australian embassies and for distribution in government bookshops.

In 2003 the hard-cover book In Defence of Australia's Constitutional Monarchy by Philip Benwell was published by Mellen Press in the USA ISBN 0773466967.
