Like Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemi is a wacky satirical parody. The staff of both series are almost identical, among them the director Shinichi Watanabe. Since Puni Puni Poemi is an OVA spinoff of Excel Saga, some characters also return, most notoriously Nabeshin, Watanabe's alter ego. The last episode of Excel Saga had Nabeshin marrying Kumi-Kumi; Poemi Watanabe, the main character of Puni Puni Poemi, is their daughter.

Puni Puni Poemi 's ridicule focuses on OVA clichés, mostly magical girl series, but also (in surprisingly graphical way) hentai, making it highly unsuitable for children.

There are 2 episodes, each having a length of about 26 minutes.

The english translation is called Puni Puni Poemy and is available on DVD from ADV Films.

Characters

  • Poemi Watanabe: A hyperactive 10-year-old girl - even more hyperactive than Excel, which is, as anyone who has watched Excel Saga can confirm, no mean feat. She wants to be a voice actress (and keeps calling herself Kobayashi - the name of her seiyuu (voice actress), Yumiko Kobayashi). She looks like Sakura in Card Captor Sakura.
  • Puni Puni Poemi: Poemi finds a fish, stabs it with a kitchen knife and it becomes a magic item which transforms Poemi into the typical magical girl. Weird.
  • Futaba Aasu: Poemi's classmate and best friend. She loves Poemi-chan and well... there is some lesbian stuff in the anime even if it's not explicit as in hentai movies. Of course, she looks like Tomoyo.
  • Kumi-kumi-san: Oh... she's the girl from the mountains in Excel Saga and she's Poemi's mother.
  • Director (Nabeshin): He's happily married to Kumi-kumi-san and is Poemi's father.
  • The Aasu (Earth) family: Oh curious. The girls' names are all related to numbers:
    • Nanase (from nana=7) is the oldest, after her come
    • Mutsumi (muttsu=6),
    • Itsue (itsu=5),
    • Shii (shi=4),
    • Mitsuki (mittsu=3),
    • Futaba (futa=2) and finally
    • Hitomi (hito=1).

Shii looks like Hyatt, just that she has enormous breasts and loves to let them rest on top of Poemi's head. All of them have somewhat useless magical powers. Well, this strange family has to protect the Earth from a race of weird half-dressed aliens.

  • Kei-kun: The boy Poemi likes. It's weird that Poemi is as genki as she is and still she can't manage to talk with him.
