Importance
Jammu Tawi (JAT) is a Railway station in Jammu in North India. It is the largest railway station in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and also a major railhead in the state. Jammu Tawi is an important station for Hindu pilgrims heading for Vaishno Devi and Amarnath. Moreover, it is an important station for tourists heading towards the Kashmir Valley. It lies in the Firozpur Division of Northern Railways. Jammu Tawi is well connected to significant Indian cities; such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Patna, Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Amritsar and Guwahati by rail.
The second longest running train in India, in terms of time and distance; the Himsagar Express that goes till Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu in 70 hours, originates from here.

Old Jammu Station
Before the building of Jammu Tawi station, there was an old station which had train services to Sialkot Junction, (now in Pakistan) before partition. The 27 mile line has not been revived till now because of the Kashmir dispute. In 2000, much of that railway station was demolished to make way for an art centre.
