Rory096 warning

I write once more to thank you for proffering the explanations you did last night apropos of your warning to Rory. Even as I continue to believe that the issuance of a warning that is both first and last is generally to be looked upon with disfavor, and even as I continue to believe that indecorous or untoward behavior at an RfA should be viewed differently from such behavior in article mainspace or on talk pages, inasmuch as the former is less disruptive than (or is only tangentially as disruptive as) the latter, I now surely recognize that you were not acting rashly in issuing the warning; I apprehended, at first, a bit of dismissive haughtiness in your warning and imputed to you a "new 'crat" arrogance, but I was surely wrong about that, and I thank you for spelling out for me your thinking in this regard. Whatever may be one's beliefs about the propriety of a "first and last warning", it was not appropriate, surely, for Rory to challenge your warning or express disagreement with you by explicitly contravening your directions. I'm not so sure I agree with Misplaced Pages practices in this regard. (Note: that is one reason I rarely venture over here from Wiktionary.)
I think a sysop's duty is to act as a servant to the community's wishes. One thing I battle with regularly on Wiktionary is whether I am acting on my own intuition, or simply doing that duty. It is sometimes very difficult to discern.
I think that User:Rory096 was making a humorous comment at first. When rolled back, he seems to have re-inserted his joke without profanity (apparently thinking that was what had caused the offense.) The misunderstanding then escalated, as that was misinterpreted as "reverting the decision of a bureaucrat" or something.
Clearly, Rory096's vote change was then a human response, perhaps inappropriate.
But what I am left wondering, is how banning him from the #vandalism* channels helps anyone. On en.wiktionary, he is a good faith contributor, even if he can rub me the wrong way on occasion.
I request the irc channel ban on him be lifted. --Connel MacKenzie 19:54, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
