==Development==
===Origins===
Work on ''Assassin's Creed III'' began almost immediately after the release of ''Assassin's Creed II'' (2009) by a senior team of Ubisoft developers.<ref name="gi1"/> When Ubisoft first revealed '']'' in 2010, as new details came to light, there was some confusion within the gaming community as to whether this would be ''Assassin's Creed III''. According to the developers, ''Brotherhood'' was not ''Assassin's Creed III,'' and the third installment will not star a "pre-existing character."<ref></ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.neoseeker.com/news/14389-ubisoft-brotherhood-is-not-assassins-creed-25/|title=Ubisoft: Brotherhood is not Assassin's Creed 2.5 - Neoseeker News Article |publisher=Neoseeker.com |date=2010-07-20 |accessdate=2012-03-01}}</ref> Ubisoft Montreal's developers stated in their interviews that ''Assassin's Creed III'' will be released eventually.

Jean-François Boivin of Ubisoft also stated that each numbered title in the series will introduce a new lead character and a new setting.<ref name="ac3-gamerzine">{{cite web|url=http://www.gamerzines.com/ps3/news/assassins-creed-3-details.html|title=Ubisoft reveals first ever details on Assassin's Creed 3|publisher=Gamerzines.com|date=2010-06-08|accessdate=2010-11-17}}</ref> Patrice Désilets, former series' creative director, said that the series has always been planned as a trilogy. He also commented on the story of ''Assassin's Creed III'', saying that it will focus on Assassins' quest to prevent the end of the world in 2012, and their race against time to find temples and Apples of Eden built by "Those Who Came Before". Desmond will be searching for clues as to the locations of these temples, by exploring memories of one (or more) of his other ancestors.<ref name="ac-vgb-ultimate">{{cite web|url=http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2009/06/10/assassins-creed-3-will-see-desmond-become-the-ultimate-assassin.htm|title= Assassins Creed 3 will see Desmond Miles become the Ultimate Assassin |publisher=Video Games Blogger|date=2009-06-10 |accessdate=2010-11-17}}</ref>

In October 2011 Alexandre Amacio, creative director of '']'', announced that the next installment of the franchise was to be released before December 2012, however, Amacio himself would not be directing the game.<ref name="amancioquit">{{cite web|url=http://www.gamingunion.net/news/assassins-creed-revelations-creative-director-quits-ubisoft--7488.html|title=Assassin's Creed: Revelations Creative Director Quits Ubisoft|publisher=GamingUnion.net|date=2012-01-11|accessdate = 2011-01-11}}</ref> This comes from the idea that Desmond Miles, the modern day protagonist of the series, was to finish his tale by December 2012. Amacio said that gamers should not have to play a futuristic game after the time period in which it is set.<ref>{{cite web|last=Pereira|first=Chris|title=Expect a Larger Gap Between Future Assassin's Creed Releases|url=http://www.1up.com/news/expect-larger-gap-between-assassins-creed-games|publisher=1up}}</ref>

===Pre-announcement===
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed during an earnings call on November 8, 2011, that a new "major" ''Assassin's Creed'' game will be released in 2012. Guillemot refused to go into any further detail on the title beyond its confirmation.<ref>{{cite web|last=Jackson|first=Mike|title=New Assassin's Creed in 2012, confirms Ubi|url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/325502/new-assassins-creed-in-2012-confirms-ubi/|publisher=Computer And Video Games}}</ref> Speaking to MCV, Guillemot dismissed the notion that annual ''Assassin's Creed'' installments are diluting the brands, stating instead that they're necessary to "satisfy the demand". Guillemot also claimed in the same interview that this year's ''Assassin's Creed'' will be the series' "biggest to date."<ref>{{cite web|author=Robinson, Andy|url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/333495/assassins-creed-3-will-be-series-biggest-yet-ubisoft/ |title=Assassin's Creed 3 will be series' 'biggest yet' - Ubisoft |publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com |date=2012-01-26 |accessdate=2012-03-01}}</ref>

In February 2012, Ubisoft officially confirmed the existence of ''Assassin's Creed III'', and its North American release date of October 30, 2012.<ref name="AC3-conf">{{cite web|last=Reilly|first=Jim|title=Assassin's Creed III Coming In October|url=http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/02/15/assassin-39-s-creed-3-release-date.aspx}}</ref> Guillemot described ''Assassin's Creed III'' as "the true next generation of both the Assassin's Creed brand and interactive entertainment/storytelling in general. We will push the title a lot because it's a fantastic product that the team has been working on for three years. What we have seen is just fabulous."<ref name="AC3-conf"/><ref name="AC3-confirmed"/> Guillemot went on to say the publisher's investing more heavily in the game than in any other title in the series.<ref name="AC3-confirmed">{{cite web|author=Ivan, Tom |url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/336082/assassins-creed-3-release-date-october-30/ |title=Assassin's Creed 3 release confirmed for October |publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com |date=2012-02-15 |accessdate=2012-03-01}}</ref>

====Internal leaks====
Reports that ''Assassin's Creed III'' would take place during the American Revolution surfaced following a supposed "inside source" at Ubisoft, who made such a claim in January 2012.<ref>{{cite web|author=Robinson, Andy|url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/333754/assassins-creed-3-heads-to-american-revolution-rumour/?cid=OTC-RSS&attr=CVG-General-RSS |title=Assassin's Creed 3 heads to American Revolution - Rumour |publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com |date=2012-01-27 |accessdate=2012-03-01}}</ref> On February 29, 2012, an upcoming promotional image of the game was sent to ] by a ] employee, along with information from the retailer that a full reveal was imminent.<ref name="EG-leak">{{cite web|last=Phillips |first=Tom |url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-01-assassins-creed-3-set-in-american-revolution-report |title=Assassin's Creed 3 set in American Revolution - report • News • |publisher=Eurogamer.net |date= |accessdate=2012-03-01}}</ref> The leaked promotional image led to a general consensus that the game is set in North America during the American Revolution, and at least in part, a snowy setting.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://oxcgn.com/2012/03/01/assassins-creed-3-oxcgn-picks-american-revolution-in-march-2011-evidence-now-in/|title=Assassin's Creed 3: OXCGN Picks American Revolution in March 2011 - Evidence now in!|last=Laborde|first=Nicholas|date=March 1, 2012|publisher=OXCGN|accessdate=1 March 2012}}</ref> Around the same time, Ubisoft mentioned "a major announcement from Assassin's Creed" was "only days away" via the series' official Facebook. The page's cover photo also depicted a snowy and bleak setting.<ref name="EG-leak"/> Furthermore, '']'' appeared ready to confirm the fresh details via an advertising banner posted on its site. Images show the new assassin standing next to American revolutionary leader ].<ref name="EG-leak"/>

Following the reports, Ubisoft released ''Assassin's Creed III'''s official box art on March 1, 2012, which confirms the game's American Revolution setting.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150594293448068.391304.6119163067&type=3|title=Assassin's Creed III Packshots|date=March 1, 2012|publisher=] on ]|accessdate=1 March 2012}}</ref> The company said it will announce "all the details" at 5pm on March 5.<ref>{{cite web|last=Yin |first=Wesley |url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-01-official-assassins-creed-3-box-art-confirms-american-revolution-setting |title=Official Assassin's Creed 3 box art confirms American Revolution setting • News • |publisher=Eurogamer.net |date= |accessdate=2012-03-01}}</ref> Additionally, ''Game Informer'' revealed its latest cover feature which includes more artwork of the game's new main character.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/338061/assassins-creed-3-is-official-set-in-america-first-images/|title=Assassin's Creed 3 is official, set in America - First images|last=Robinson|first=Andy|date=March 1, 2012|publisher=Computerandvideogames.com|accessdate=1 March 2012}}</ref> On March 2, several screenshots were leaked ahead of Ubisoft's official reveal, and the first gameplay details emerged via ''Game Informer''.<ref>{{cite web|last=Ivan |first=Tom |url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/338285/first-assassins-creed-3-screenshots-appear-online/ |title=News: First Assassin's Creed 3 screenshots appear online |publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com |date=2012-03-02 |accessdate=2012-04-07}}</ref>

===Post-announcement===
''Assassin's Creed III'' was unveiled with a cinematic trailer on March 5, 2012. Ubisoft described the game as the "most ambitious" project in the company's history, with twice the production capacity of any previous title from the publisher. The game features a new engine, AnvilNext, for improved visuals, character models and AI, allowing for battlefields full of fighters.<ref name=unveiling/> Ubisoft later said it's aiming to make ''Assassin's Creed III'' "look next-gen" on current-gen consoles using the new AnvilNext engine.<ref>{{cite web|last=Robinson |first=Andy |url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/338581/assassins-creed-3-aiming-to-look-next-gen-on-360-ps3-ubisoft/ |title=News: Assassin's Creed 3 'aiming to look next-gen' on 360, PS3 - Ubisoft |publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com |date=2012-03-05 |accessdate=2012-04-07}}</ref>

Ubisoft said that when Rockstar's '']'' released mid-way through ''Assassin's Creed III''{{'}}s development, it was surprised to see Rockstar had included wild animal hunting and a giant frontier to explore—features both planned for its own sequel. Lead writer Corey May said Ubisoft's now looking at ''Red Dead''{{'}}s success and trying to take the formula in "new directions". Similarities between these two games are down to "a convergence of minds", said ''Assassin's Creed III'' writer Matt Turner.<ref>{{cite web|last=Robinson |first=Andy |url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/341576/assassins-creed-3-team-looking-at-red-dead-redemption-success/ |title=News: Assassin's Creed 3 team 'looking at Red Dead Redemption success' |publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com |date=2012-03-27 |accessdate=2012-04-07}}</ref> Creative Director Alex Hutchinson said Ubisoft steered clear of making the ''Assassin's Creed III'' protagonist a female character because the game's setting is not a strong match. Hutchinson said while many people wanted to see female assassins in the series, the American Revolution setting makes it difficult this time round.<ref>{{cite web|author=March 28, 2012 6:33AM PDT |url=http://asia.gamespot.com/news/assassins-creed-iii-female-hero-would-be-a-pain-says-developer-6368577 |title=Assassin's Creed III female hero would be a 'pain,' says developer - GameSpot.com |publisher=Asia.gamespot.com |date=2012-03-28 |accessdate=2012-04-07}}</ref> Despite this, however, exactly the same timeframe and setting are used in the portable spinoff '']'', which does indeed feature a female Assassin as the playable character.

Ubisoft recommends the PC version of the game to be played with a controller even though it will still support keyboard and mouse setup. Ubisoft Montreal's Creative Director Alex Hutchinson admitted: "We're definitely supporting PC, we love PC, but I think it'll be PC with a controller. I don't see us investing hugely in a mouse and keyboard setup. I think if you want to play on PC and you want to play Assassin's Creed, you have a controller."<ref>http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/assassins-creed-2012/1221571p1.html/ {{dead link|date=April 2012}}</ref>

At ], extra features were revealed for the ] version of the game. The player has the ability to change weapons on the go and the map is always visible on the ]. Also announced was news for the multiplayer mode. It was announced that there would be over 12 modes, one of which is Domination where players hold certain points on the map. You will be able to play as the British military and the mode is "run" by Abstergo, as with previous games. Game mechanics will carry over from the single player, so multiplayer will still be about stealth, sneaking, and killing people in interesting ways. Finally, female assassins will be included.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/724651/assassins-creed-3-multiplayer-detailed/|title=Assassin's Creed 3 Multiplayer Detailed|last=Johnson|first=Stephen|accessdate=June 5, 2012|date=June 5, 2012}}</ref> Ubisoft also revealed the naval aspect of the game. The entire eastern seaboard is an explorable area, much like New York City, Boston, and the Frontier, and will have its own missions, action, side events, and map. In the area, Connor will captain a ship, where the player can attack enemy ships.<ref name = "GI naval"/>

Setting

Set in Colonial America, the Assassin-Templar war has become involved in the American Revolution. As series' protagonist Desmond Miles, the player controls a young purely fictitious and bioculturally impossible character dubiously named "Connor Kenway", drawn into the fight against tyranny when his home is attacked by colonists. Over the course of the game, Kenway will encounter historical figures including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Lee, Israel Putnam, Paul Revere, General Lafayette, John Pitcairn, William Prescott, King George III, Samuel Adams and Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. The story will span 30 years of Connor's life, from 1753 to 1783. Boston and New York will be cities that can be explored, as well as an open world area full of forest, cliffs, rivers, American villages, and American cities of Lexington and Concord. The entire eastern seaboard will also be explorable via Connor captaining a ship.
