The Battle of the Coral Sea, May 8, 1942 was the first major naval battle which occurred early in World War II in the South Pacific, after the initial defeat of Pearl Harbor. American ships involved included the aircraft carriers Yorktown (CV-5) and Lexington (CV-2) and the Cruiser USS Salt Lake City a point some 450 miles east of Tulagi.
