After dating Casablancas , Adams married an Italian investment banker , whom she subsequently divorced. She was then involved with several prominent New York City men, including Robert De Niro before becoming the first and only Playboy Playmate to come out publicly as a lesbian.

Adams was in a relationship for some time with a woman named Denise Taormina , and briefly dated comedian Marga Gomez and rock star Joan Jett . Adams was later involved with a woman named Barbara Assisi who appeared on the cover of various publications with her including her book entitled Empress. Adams has often said of her romantic life that she is a "Playboy trapped in a Playmate's body." Since then, Adams has been dating a woman who works for the NYPD and prefers to keep the details of their love life private.

In 1999, Adams founded a new-age company named GODDESSY, a portmanteau of "goddess" and "odyssey". Following the death of her aunt from breast cancer in 2003, Adams decided to quit modeling full-time and dedicate most of her time towards writing. That same year, GODDESSY subsequently became the title of a series of astrology, new age, spiritual and metaphysical books written by Adams. Since then, Adams has written sixteen books in addition to contributing horoscopes and articles to various publications.

Adams continues to appear on magazine covers, and make celebrity appearances for Playboy as well as other organizations. She has also become a spokesperson and advocate in the LGBT community, giving speeches for several Gay Prides in New York City, and speaking for organizations such as Out Professionals, Heritage Of Pride and Women's Alliance.
