Founded in 1947 as a school for girls, it was originally named St. Ferdinand High School. In 1956, the school admitted boys for the first time, and changed its name to Bishop Alemany High School. The school's present namesake is Joseph Sadoc Alemany, the first archbishop of San Francisco.

Alemany used to be located on the north side of Rinaldi St, just east of Sepulveda Blvd, but the Northridge earthquake in 1994 forced the school to move across the street into the nearby buildings of Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary at the historic San Fernando Mission. The high school shared the campus with the seminarians for one year. The seminary closed in 1995. The 1971 Sylmar Earthquake did considerable damage to Alemany's campus, as well.

Athletics

In 2006, Bishop Alemany High School changed their mascot from the Alemany Indians to the Bishop Alemany Warriors.

The Alemany boys basketball team won the 2012 Div 3 State Championship by defeating Sacred Heart Cathedral 71-67 at Power Balance Pavilion (ARCO Arena) in Sacramento on March 24, 2012. The boys basketball team also won the 2012 Southern California Div 3 Regional Championship over Saint John Bosco 62-61. The Alemany football team has been Mission League Champions from 2007–2009 and Serra League Champions in 2010. They lost in the CIF Finals in 2009 to Mira Costa. The boys basketball team was CIF finalists in 2010, semi-finalists in 2011 and CIF Champions in 2012. Alemany is also known for its rich history in girl's basketball (3 CIF titles) and softball. Its main rivals include Crespi, Notre Dame, Chaminade, and Bishop Amat on special occasions.
