Amity University is a private university in India. Established by the non-profit Ritnand Balved Education Foundation in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh; it has campuses in Noida, Lucknow, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Gwalior and Dubai.

History

In many circles, its brand name is uttered as the lowest common denominator, the “safe” option for students who cannot get in anywhere else", while at the same time, some courses are "highly regarded". The controversies that the article alludes are dogging Amity relate to Amity's issues with statutory government education regulators like AICTE, UGC and the "charges of fraud in Germany that led to an international search warrant against Ashok Chauhan." Amity was India's first private university to implement reservations for both faculty as well as students, The school started with an enrollment of 120 students. In 2011, it had 80,000 students in 240 programs.

Amity has 240 programs in 50 disciplines.

Recognition

In 2005, the government's statutory body for approving technical programs, AICTE had revoked Amity's license to offer the post graduate course in business. In 2007, after a petition filed by Amity, the Delhi High Court directed UGC to include Amity University's name on its website. The courts additionally asked UGC to conduct inspection to find out problems in Amity University's programmes.This was done as UGC had not recognized Amity University. That year, AICTE also brought out an advisory for students to "avoid 168 unapproved colleges"; the list included Amity.

Currently, Amity University is accredited by NAAC (National Accreditation and Assessment Council) with grade A in 2010.

Amity University, Noida

It is a Member of and listed by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the International Association of Universities (IAU), and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Amity's Business Schools are accredited by the American Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs(ACBSP), USA. Amity's Engineering Degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, IET, UK.

Research

According to its chancellor, Amity faculty, scientists and students filed over 150 patents in 2010-2011 in areas ranging from nanotechnology to food processing.

Campuses

Amity Campus, Lucknow

According to the university, it has five campuses - Noida, Lucknow, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Gwalior. As per Amity, it also has Business Schools across various cities in India under the name of "Amity Global Business Schools", and in London, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius.

Management

Atul Chauhan is President of Ritnand Balved Education Foundation and Chancellor of Amity University. Aseem Chauhan is the Additional President of the Foundation. In 2007, USA Today reported that Ashok Chauhan, the founder of Amity, expected that generations of his family will control the school.

Activities

In exchange for co-branding opportunities, Amity trained 22,000 volunteers for the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.
