Tom Aspell
Can someone please create an article for Tom Aspell? He was born in 1950 and died on February 11, 2013, at age 62, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. He was an NBC News foreign correspondent for 28 years and started in the business in 1970, so it amazes me that he doesn't have an article. If anyone would be kind of enough to start an article, here's the link to the story and video from this evening's broadcast of NBC Nightly News, which verifies all the information I've given. They announced his death just a couple hours ago. Thank you. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 01:30, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Btw, his name currently links to dozens of articles.. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 01:35, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- I left a note at Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. Someone there may create an article and that may be faster than the other article creation request areas.--Canoe1967 (talk) 02:07, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, but please do not close this thread. Perhaps someone who sees it will be nice enough to create the article. Thanks.--76.189.111.199 (talk) 02:22, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Assistance with proper source coding
I made an edit on Michael Milken's BLP page tonight. In the third paragraph, I was attempting add a source. Here's the code I used: <ref name='Milken Family Foundation'>{{cite web|url=http://mff.org/about/about.taf?page=funding}}</ref>
.
I've made an error apparently, and need some help correcting it. Thank you. LarryWeisenberg (talk) 05:59, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- It appears that edit has been reversed because the way you edited the article was incorrect, and clearly illustrated your bias on this subject. Please review WP:COI to understand why we discourage people with close personal connections to an article refrain from editing it. Please bring up your concerns, comments, etc, on the articles "talk" page instead of directly editing it... However, for future reference in editing other articles, what you were missing was the title element as part of the reference. Please see {{cite web}} for more information on the proper usage. Problem with another Wiki member constantly changing article facts for personal vendetta(s).
I am discussing information regarding the Wiki "Bassman" article about Fender Bassman amplifiers. The problem is that a main source of information published sixteen years ago during 1997, is old, inaccurate and just needs updating, and a person named “Spoond” is ruining new 2011 and 2012 information I have published on Wiki for his own personal vendetta.
During 2011, I discovered I owned a 1954 Fender “5D6” 4x10 Bassman amplifier. Excited, I researched, sought and discovered ten other 1954 5D6 Bassman owners of the same amp. This particular amplifier is historic, is the first of its kind, and is considered the "Mother of All Rock Amplifiers". I’ve read the Greg Gagliano 1997 published article about vintage Fender amplifiers. I have researched and discovered many new 1950s Fender amplifier production facts. I have sited these facts in public amplifier forums and blogs. Nothing has been disputed and most comments are excited to know the link from early 1940s and 1950s Fender amplifiers to the now famous 1954 Fender 5D6 4x10 Bassman amplifier. The 1997 Greg Gagliano "article" is basically the same thing I am currently doing = researching and sharing Fender amplifier history. The early 1990s Greg Gagliano research is good and was the first of its kind regarding vintage 1950s Fender amplifiers, but Greg Gagliano states frequently that he does not have all known (1990s) information published or noted, and he acknowledges there are new amps and amp versions discovered every year. Neither Greg Gagliano nor I have published a book. Greg Gagliano simply published an article in 1997. I like his article, but I have added to the updates. Just because someone publishes an "article", does not mean they are complete or 100% accurate.
Anyway, knowing I own a very rare amplifier increased my interest towards Fender history. I’ve gathered information, researched and published 1953, 1954 and 1955 Fender production dates, model numbers and serial number information that has never been published except for my recent 2012 and 2013 forum announcements, blog posts and Wiki contributions (on Wiki since January 31st, 2012 = just over a full year of special uncovered information and the correcting of mis-information).
The BIG PROBLEM is that a Wiki member named "Spoond" has started rewriting and republishing the 1997 inaccurate material. He purposefully removes all my 2011 and 2012 new material that adds accuracy towards the numbers produced by Fender in 1954. Essentially, his rewriting eliminates known 1954 Fender amplifiers. I know this person Spoond. He is an instigator and agitator and has bothered me for some time. Therefore, Spoond’s OVERWRITING new information back to the inaccurate 1997 article, is not for the good of Wiki, for good information of historic 1954 Fender Bassmans, nor for the good of other Wiki readers to contribute ~ but is only satisfying for Spoond’s personal agenda towards me, since I do own a vintage 1954 Fender Bassman, and he does not. He has previously bothered me on other forums and blogs.
Please. what can we, you or I do? Should I site blogs or forums as resources? Please help me. What would you do? Thank you. Fender Player — Preceding unsigned comment added by FenderPlayer (talk • contribs) 07:29, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Neither would likely be considered a reliable source, since anyone can add to them as you yourself have done. And some of your work appears to be Original research, which is not allowed, as it would make us a primary source of that work. I suggest talking to Spoond and discussing this. If that fails, then there is always a third opinion. Thanks ツ Jenova20 09:31, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, Jenova20. I understand "original source", but for something from 1954, there is just gathering information from known existing amplifiers that were not known in 1997. I have added more "third party reference technical sources" and added "citation needed" to increase awareness. I do not see "chatting with Spoond" as it is a contentious relationship. If more unfair removal of text back to old unreliable text is done, what are the options? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.210.161.65 (talk) 14:39, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- You could request a third opinion if the dispute is just between the two of you. They're usually helpful. Good luck ツ Jenova20 15:32, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'd like to stress that, while you may indeed be an expert in the field, unless and until the information is published in a reliable source as viewed by Misplaced Pages, it cannot be used, regardless of its truth. Basically, that means someplace with an editorial staff that's willing to verify, edit, and publish your research under their (good) name. —— 03:23, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Creating a new wikipedia to collect World War II stories in France
I have begun to collect World War II stories, particularly the Resistance hiding pilots, for a museum in the UK (I'm a US citizen living in Normandy, France). As an editor here on other history subjects for Normandy, I obviously wanted to add stories here at Misplaced Pages. However,I'm not able to use the material in Misplaced Pages as it is not published. Earlier on this page someone recommended creating another Misplaced Pages dedicated to this subject and hosted here. It appears that I may have town here willing to participate. Events may outstrip my knowledge very fast. Can someone advice me how to do that.Mlane (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:08, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Copy-edit tag | Ready to remove?
Hi! What's the procedure for removing a copy-edit tag? I've been working on an article that I found on the community portal, and I think it's much better now - I've removed the orphan tag but not sure if I should to the same with the copy-edit tag. Ta! - If you think you have finished copy editing then I would just go ahead and remove it and leave a note on the talk page explaining why you have done so. I have also made a few changes including moving the article to Modern elementary mathematics as the disambiguating stuff in parentheses is not required.--ukexpat (talk) 16:33, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Defamatory Association on History Page is Causing Problems - Please Help!
Dear help,
We are having great trouble removing reference to our brand name used incorrectly on a historic page of Misplaced Pages. The page in question is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/Talk%3ABrahma_Kumaris_World_Spiritual_University/Objective_proposal
We can remove our brand name from this page (under 'Fronts and Organizations'). Unfortunately we cannot get rid of it on the Edit History pages. This is a completely incorrect association with our company, and it is having a negative effect on business. We are in absolutely no way shape or form associated with Brahma Kumaris.
Can we please request a complete removal of this reference as it's impacting our reputation.
Many thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.58.48 (talk) 12:50, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Done. And I'll do it here, too. --Dweller (talk) 13:12, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- The page (which is an unreferenced mess) has never been editing to remove the inclusion, until you removed it today. The edit history has been hidden, per above but the fact that it contained it is not, I suspect, the real issue because edit histories are only seen by a tiny handful of people who actually delve into it deliberately. I am guessing the real issue is that Google and other search engines are showing the information (or that it is shown in Misplaced Pages mirrors). The search engine results should stop showing it once the page is re-indexed by them now that the link has been removed. We have no control over that process and can do little about mirrors.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:23, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- NB, I have nominated the page for deletion: Misplaced Pages:Miscellany for deletion/Talk:Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University/Objective proposal --Dweller (talk) 13:41, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Should mirror sites have a link to an article's edit page?
Dear editors: I was helping to expand the article Arizona, Manitoba, and I came across this web site: http://news.ca.searchnearme.com/InfoMaps.about3/Manitoba/Arizona,5886915. It is an exact copy of the article in Misplaced Pages. I went to the Misplaced Pages:Mirrors and forks page, and didn't see searchnearme.com on the list. I read the article which says that it's all right to copy the text of articles. This particular article has one of those "This article is a stub" templates included, and it links right to the edit page for the article. My concern is that people who have no idea how to edit an article may click on this and not even realize that they have left searchnearme.com and are editing Misplaced Pages. Is this considered a problem? If not, I presume that I should just add the web site to the list of mirror sites. —Anne Delong (talk) 14:34, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- I don't consider it a problem. It doesn't break our license. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:37, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
North Korean nuclear test
Is it appropriate for this page marked as a disambiguation page to contain statistics and references? I guess normally not per WP:DABNOT. Assistance required with cladogram
Some canid articles are undergoing re-writes, and as part of the project, some cladograms are needed illustrating the phylogeny of each species, based on this table here: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v438/n7069/images/nature04338-f10.2.jpg
For now, all that's needed is a cladogram illustrating the "wolf-like" canids (the ones marked in blue in the above figure). Ideally, the cladogram should use the same template as the one in the Nicobar Pigeon article. Thanks in advance. Mariomassone (talk) 15:28, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- I made a start, which I now see is irrelevant (I should have read your request more carefully and noticed the words "marked in blue"), at User:Maproom/cladogram. I have some comments, which you may find useful:
- The creation process is quite slow, and easy to get wrong.
- The template produces clades with each branchpoint asymmetric. I find ones with symmetric branchpoints, like the one you cite from Nature, much more pleasing, and indeed less confusing.
- I would look at the template, and either edit it or or clone-and-rename it and edit the clone, except that (1) I can't find the template, and (2) I have never tried editing a template before.
- Maproom (talk) 23:16, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
How to add a note...
I need to add a few notes to a table but don't know how. I can make smaller text, but what i need looks more like the a citation leaves. By note, i mean a small letter or number, which is explained in further detail lower down the page. Thanks ツ Jenova20 15:35, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

- It also appears that the copyright violation from the version which was deleted has been repeated in your more recent draft. It appears to contain material previously published at http://www.artscentregroup.org.uk/ChrisLeePower.php. Even in a user space draft, copyright violation is not permitted. The same applies to the subject's attempt to publish his biography on what I assume is his own user page at User:Chrisleepower. He was previously warned about copyright at User talk:Chrisleepower. The rules for donation of copyright material are at WP:DCM, but Misplaced Pages is not here to provide a platform for promotion of the subject, which is why guidance on conflict of interest is given at WP:COI. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:59, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

wikEd Troubles
wikEd's syntax highlighting hasn't been working for me on my family's 2007 iMac running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard! What do I do in Safari 5.0.6 to fix this crippling bug?
RandomDSdevel (talk) 19:17, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Have you checked you haven't disabled it by accident? There should be an icon in the top right hand corner of the window (by 'log out' etc.) which you might have clicked by mistake. If that doesn't work, maybe User:Cacycle/wikEd_help#Troubleshooting will help. SmartSE (talk) 20:44, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- No, I see the wikEd toolbar, but toggling syntax highlighting on and off to update its results after pasting in a long post that I've been drafting inside wikEd for a while and saving it within a raw TextEdit document with the intent of adding it to the Mathematics reference desk just changes the hand that I should get when hovering over the syntax-highlighting toggle into the old, 'OS 9'-style, indeterminate-progress indicator (you know, the stopwatch instead of the OS X rainbow pinwheel that I should be getting?) I turned on the JavaScript Compatibility Library gadget the other day, but that shouldn't affect this, should it?
- RandomDSdevel (talk) 23:19, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Never mind; I just forgot to click the 'wikify' button after pasting my post back into the editing area from the TextEdit document in which I was storing its draft.

Wikidata
Did I miss an announcement? I noticed that someone had removed WP:interwiki links from an article, and after a bit of research I found that Wikidata had gone live and that language links are now to be provided through that route. I am not sure whether the Wikidata database has been fully populated with data consistent with the current content of en-w, nor am I sure how any further changes to iw links on en-w would find their way into Wikidata before iw links are removed from en-w, nor whether checks are being done on the consistency of the data before the en-w iw links are removed. I assume that I'm not the only en-w editor who is not fully informed, so I would be grateful if anyone involved with the Wikidata project could give us a clue. - David Biddulph (talk) 03:05, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Category generated by template
ResolvedWhen I preview a page with User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:File page NFCC concerns tag I can see that the page is placed in Category:Non-free files lacking a rationale as of February 2013, which is as intended. However, the template also should place the file in a category for all non-free files which lack a rationale (I specified the ambox parameter | all = Non-free files lacking a rationale). This doesn't work however. Why and how can I fix it? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 09:20, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
See Template:Ambox for the documentation of the ambox template, where the all parameter is included in the common parameters, if it helps. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 11:46, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Frustration
I have been trying without success to edit material on the page on me Quintin Jardine. I am doing to because that page has been copied by Facebook and used to create a community page on me without my knowledge or permission, but also because some material on the Misplaced Pages entry constitutes a breach of privacy to me. Furthermore I note that the cited references on my Misplaced Pages page include my own website. I must point out that all material on that site is the copyright of Portador Ltd, my company and may not be used without its permission. I'm a big fan of Misplaced Pages, and a financial supporter, but my loyalty will be at an end if my most recent edit is not reinstated and the image attached removed.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qjardine (talk • contribs) 10:57, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Quintin. I've taken a close look at the page in question, but haven't made any alterations to it. May I ask which parts you object to? As far as I can see (having made comparisons with several pages on your website) there is no reproduction of copyrighted text, and indeed, the website itself appears to verify most if not all of the biographical information. If you could give precise details of which parts of the article you object to, and why (either here or on my talkpage), I can see about having them removed, but at first glance, I don't immediately see anything that would cause a breach of privacy or a copyright violation. The image in the article is one that you yourself released under the GNU Free Document Licence, and therefore is free for anyone, including Misplaced Pages, to amend or use as they see fit. Yunshui 雲水 11:14, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Shouldn't the page be either Matthew Quintin Jardine or Matthew Jardine? Or is Quintin Jardine the name you authors your books under? Thanks ツ Jenova20 11:33, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Nope, Quintin Jardine is correct, per WP:COMMONNAME. Yunshui 雲水 11:35, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- I stand corrected. Bravo ツ Jenova20 11:36, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- His objections are shown in this edit. Per WP:BLP, "Contentious material about living persons (or recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion." Qjardine removed unsourced information. The page then was subject to possible vandalism. I've removed what Qjardine removed and posted a request at WP:BLPN for further trimming of the page/to watch the page. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 12:07, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

- If you are in a position to release an image under a compatible license to Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia then you just need an WP:autoconfirmed account before you can upload it. If the image is already here then copy and paste this: ] and fill in the file name where you see "example" and also a caption. Good luck! ツ Jenova20 17:19, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Standard image advice follows:
- If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Misplaced Pages's image use policy.
- If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Misplaced Pages or Wikimedia Commons, add
]
to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacingFile name.jpg
with the actual file name of the image, andCaption text
with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40--ukexpat (talk) 18:38, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

fixing piped link of redirect?
Let's say that Aeiou is an article and Bfjpv is a redirect to Aeiou. If I find an article that has ] in it, should that be edited to simply ]. Both links will end up at the article Aeiou and the second is shorter.Naraht (talk) 19:01, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's often better to link to the redirect, except in navigation boxes. See WP:NOPIPE and WP:R#NOTBROKEN. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:11, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Like most things, the answer is "sometimes". In general, if one is just a synonym/capitalization/re-punctuation of the other, I edit the link as long as I'm doing something else to the article. If Bfjpv is a sub-subject within the Aeiou article, and it might some day have its own article, I leave the link as it is. An example might be if Bfjpv is the founder of company Aeiou, but has also recently been elected to public office, making him notable aside from his company. BTW, the same applies to redlinks. In the example just given, if Bfjpv doesn't exist at all, it should be left alone, as it's likely to be created in the future. —— 01:41, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Tagging information as "cite needed" instead of providing a citation
In a discussion with a relatively new account at RSN (Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Kition) the question of when to use a "citation needed" tag has come up. The other user has several times added a cite needed tag to their own edits when editing an article instead of an actual citation. See . I have asked them to stop and find adequate citations before adding information and explained that I didn't think the purpose of such a tag was to ask someone else to cite your additions for you. They think I am misinterpreting the purpose of the tag. I tried looking through some of the archives of the talkpages for wp:cite and wp:citation needed and the archives of this page, but nothing specifically popped out at me, although this has to have come up before. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks. Heiro 21:11, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- I think your approach is the correct one. The onus is on the person adding material to ensure that it is adequately referenced - if they don't have references for it, it shouldn't be added (especially if it's a BLP, though that's not the case here). I always understood that the
{{cn}}
etc tags were to alert readers to possibly unreliable content and to alert those who may be so inclined, to look for references, not as a cop-out for the user adding the possible disputed material.--ukexpat (talk) 21:25, 14 February 2013 (UTC)- Thank you, in my 4 or 5 years, that has always been my understanding as well, but couldn't find it actually stated anywhere (although my search was far from exhaustive). Heiro 21:27, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- See WP:BURDEN "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material". There's also guidance at Template:Citation needed, but it doesn't specifically address your question. RudolfRed (talk) 21:33, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Artist rendering of William Tennent
From Wendy Wirsch President of the William Tennent House Association in regards to the painting of what is believed to be William Tennent and is on Misplaced Pages site which is the above banner. Wendy is the Historian for the Neshaminy Warwick Church.
Pete
- Are you referring to the painting of a man with white hair and a ruffle on his shirt? If so, that is not William Tennent. The reason I know this is because I know the woman who owns the painting. She is Anne Tennent Cecil. She lives in Spartanburg, SC. Anne had the painting examined by art experts. The portrait is that of a man who married into the Tennent family. We also know that the gentleman isn’t William Tennent because of the clothes he is wearing. Men in the 1730’s and ‘40’s didn’t wear shirts with ruffles on them. That image needs to be removed.
- Blessings, Wendy
There is a silhouette of William Tennent that we use along with the Latin phrase "He builded better than he knew" (there is NO Latin for built)

How does one withdraw or request a tainted RfC be closed early?
I posted a neutrally worded RfC and a hostile editor added a comment to a separate discussion to which I had been party saying that the discussion from that thread was continued at the RfC I filed, even though the matter was not discussed there. Four of the subsequent five opposes then mentioned the prior discussion the op linked to but which was not a subject of or mentioned at the RfC. How do I close the tainted RfC? - Instructions on closing RfCs can be found at Misplaced Pages:RFC#Ending RfCs. If this is an RfC/U then you'll have to follow this instead. The issue of taint (forum shopping, meatpuppetry, or whatever your concern is) is probably best resolved by simply mentioning this concern in the RfC itself and then definitely seeking outside closure at WP:AN/RFC. The closing admin will certainly take that into consideration. -Thibbs (talk) 14:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Edits do not trigger default edit summary
Why do my edits such as this one not leave an edit summary saying new section such as is the case for example here? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 08:17, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- You can create the section part of the edit summary on your own by entering "/* Section name */ this is what I did in the section". This is automatically filled in for you if you edit using a section link. If you create a new section at the end of the page using the "+section" link, you automatically get the edit summary "/* Section name */ new section". If you create a new section by editing the page an manually entering "== Section name ==", then this obviously doesn't work. You could be doing other things in addition, e.g. adding several new sections. The software doesn't inspect your changes to check if you just added a new section. If you want a default summary, you'll need to remove the heading from your template and enter it manually into the section header. Alternatively, you can use the normal edit window or the section above and leave an edit summary. Finally, I think there's an option in your preferences which will autofill the edit summary with what you posted if you don't have one. User talk page issues
My computer has developed a strange issue with user talk pages. It starts to load the page and then it looks like it restarts and hangs with the progress bar at ~30%. If I refresh the page in the middle of this hangup, it does the same thing. If I try over an over (maybe 15-20 times in a row) then it seems to break its pattern and it works, but if I refresh the page again, it's back to the annoying hangup again for another 15-20 tries. I haven't been able to find any info on this weird problem online, and I know there are things I could try like reinstalling my browser, but I'm just curious about what is going on here. So I'm looking for help from people with a technical understanding of the page code for Misplaced Pages. What makes user talk pages any different from all other pages on Misplaced Pages? Is this some kind of javascripting error? -Thibbs (talk) 15:05, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- It may be a caching issue. Have you tried a WP:BYPASS?--ukexpat (talk) 15:07, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I hadn't tried that before, but I've just gone through all the steps and it still seems to be causing the same problem. I'd imagine that would affect my ability to load up other pages too, though. This problem is definitely restricted to user talk pages and only at Misplaced Pages. There must be something specific to this kind of page that my computer doesn't like. -Thibbs (talk) 15:22, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- OK next step - do you have any gadgets or scripts installed that work only in user talk space? If you do, you should try disabling them one by one to see if any of them, or a combination of them, is the culprit.--ukexpat (talk) 15:48, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Or start by logging out and see if it works then. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:03, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't knowingly get any gadgets/scripts that are specific to user talk pages, but I do have greasemonkey and I pick up gadgets occasionally when I need them. I haven't ever gotten anything specific for Misplaced Pages, though, as far as I know. Interestingly it does seem to be connected to me being logged in, though. If I'm logged out a hungup user talk page can be refreshed and it works fine. -Thibbs (talk) 16:20, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Well I am all out of ideas. Maybe the regulars at WP:VPT can help.--ukexpat (talk) 16:24, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

- The skin is shown at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. The default is Vector. What is your browser? Can you test what happens if you disable Javascript in the browser? PrimeHunter (talk) 21:12, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- My skin is Vector, and the gadgets I have turned on are:
- 1. "Ask a question" feature
- 2. Reference Tooltips
- 3. Hotcat
- 4. Form for filing disputes at the dispute resolution noticeboard
- 5. CharInsert
- 6. Add a "Sandbox" link to the personal toolbar area.
- As with the skin, this is just the default gadgets that presumably are ticked for anyone who doesn't go into the gadget area. I'm using Firefox 3.6.28 (can't get the most current version since this is the last one compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.11). Interestingly I find that turning Javascripting off does fix the problem. So that may be the best workaround for me for now.
- Another quirk I just realized is that this problem has really only come up for me when I'm trying to place a warning tag on a vandal's talk page. As I think about it, it's not just any user talk page that I have trouble with, it's particularly user talk pages of IP editors. If they have no talk page (i.e. it's redlinked) then I can create one with no problem, but if they have a bluelinked talk page then it seems to hang. -Thibbs (talk) 00:23, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, those are the default gadgets. I don't have problems with them with Vector and Firefox 18.0.2 on Windows Vista. They use Javascript. You could try disabling them. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:48, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I just tried disabling them each one at a time to see if I could identify a single one that was causing the problem, but no luck. Then I tried disabling them all in a single test and that still didn't work. I assume it's just because I'm using an outdated version of Firefox on this machine and that's causing the javascript to break. And actually with all of these various tests I've been running the problem seems to be marginally better. It only seems to be hanging around 50% of the time now. Things seemed to get better like this after I set my cache to 0M. Anyway thanks for your help on this. -Thibbs (talk) 05:35, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Deprecated tags categories
Categories such as Category:United States articles with deprecated tags, amongst others with the same task, track pages with deprecated tags. How are the pages added to said category? I'm thinking automatically, in which case I was wondering how it finds the pages with deprecated tags. I haven't been able to find any script that does it and nothing obvious in Special:Version. 89.168.137.160 (talk) 16:25, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- The category is added to the tag itself, which propagates the category to all the articles that have the depricated tags.--Jayron32 16:28, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Standardizing Misplaced Pages Usage of Princess Elizabeth
I've had a discussion today with another editor at this link with respect to standardizing Misplaced Pages usage as to how Elizabeth I is to be referred to in Misplaced Pages articles during the years 1536-1558. As I noted in my comments, almost every modern historian refers to her as 'Princess Elizabeth' during this period, as do very authoritative sources such as the Calendar of State Papers . Is there somewhere on Misplaced Pages where a discussion can take place and consensus can be reached on a topic such as this so that there isn't a discrepancy among the many Misplaced Pages articles which mention her, with some referring to her as 'Princess Elizabeth' and others as 'Lady Elizabeth'? NinaGreen (talk) 20:52, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I, the other editor, noted in my comments that authors who have been knighted for their work on this matter (if we are going to use argumenta ad verecundiam) explicitly say that Elizabeth was no longer a princess after 1536 and that it was high treason to imply otherwise. The fact that she was not a princess anymore was of great significance, which is what the authors also explain in great detail. Anyway, I suggested a compromise - referring to Elizabeth simply as Elizabeth, which is plain, simple and accurate. However, this was flatly refused and no reason was given. Surtsicna (talk) 21:29, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'm hopeful someone at the Help Desk can indicate where on Misplaced Pages discussion of this topic can properly take place among a number of editors, and consensus can be reached as to the way Elizabeth I should be referred to during the period 1536-1558 in the many Misplaced Pages articles which mention her during that period, i.e. 'Princess Elizabeth', 'Lady Elizabeth', or just plain 'Elizabeth'. There needs to be consistency among Misplaced Pages articles so that readers aren't confused. I'm sure there must be someplace on Misplaced Pages where discussion takes place about the 'style' to be used when referring to royalty and members of the nobility. I'm just not sure where it is. NinaGreen (talk) 23:35, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- How about Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject English Royalty or the talk page of a related WikiProject?--ukexpat (talk) 01:55, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the helpful suggestion. I'll post something on the English Royalty Talk page. NinaGreen (talk) 18:06, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Removing page do to lack of reference.
Hello, It was brought to my attention that some of my content under the title, Tadahiko Mizuno, did not have the required supporting references. I have subsequently listed references supporting the content.
Currently it is proposed for deletion however I trust the supporting information will satisfy your needs for the removal of this notice.
Could you please confirm? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scientistssupporter (talk • contribs) 20:59, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- What makes you say it is currently proposed for deletion? A proposed deletion was declined last week after 16 minutes. I don't see anything since then. If you refer to User talk:Scientistssupporter#Proposed deletion of Tadahiko Mizuno then it's from the same declined proposal last week. Such notices are not removed from user talk pages – unless you do it yourself, but there is no need to. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:22, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Nuru
Hi, I would like to amend the content of this page: Nuru (massage). All my corrections have been deleted. Here are the explanations:
1. Nuru is a brand for a massage gel and not a massage technique. Active registration: https://www.swissreg.ch/srclient/faces/jsp/trademark/sr30.jsp
2. The word does NOT originates from the Japanese language and does NOT mean slippery: http://translate.google.com/#ja/en/nuru
3. Nuru is not a massage oil. It is a brand for a massage GEL. Oil is better for massaging purposes and keeps your skin greasy. Gel is easily washable and not so good for massage purposes.
4. External Links: The indicated link is pure commercial and should not be in an encyclopedia. These people abuse our brand. Please cancel it.
Conclusion: Please amend the content or delete the whole topic. Thanks. Adrianme (talk) 01:44, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- It looks like you are attempting to use Wikiepedia to promote your product, the gel, which just happens to have the same name as the technique, and that is not permitted. You may very well own a trademark registration for your product in a particular class or classes of goods but that does not give you any rights over the generic term. In any event the article does not have a single reference and only a single external link of dubious usefulness, so unless references can be found it is probably heading for deletion.--ukexpat (talk) 02:16, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Don't engage in an edit war. If an editor reverts your changes, don't put it back. Instead, discuss it on the article's talk page. See WP:BRD. You've already been given explanations on why your changes were undone on your talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 02:39, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Did I do this move correctly?
There was an article, The psychology of film. A student blanked the page, wrote some new notes, and then moved the article to Dual-route hypothesis to reading. I discovered this, restored the version that existed before blanking, but discovered that the move was not undone. I tried to undo the move, failed, and manually moved the article back to The psychology of film. Now Dual-route hypothesis to reading had got an automatic redirect to The psychology of film which I erased and replaced by a sentence. I also wiped out the redirect of the talk page. Now I know that moving pages can be a bit tricky, so my question is, is everything as it should be or are there things left to be fixed? (Next time I'll undo the move before I revert to a previous version...) Lova Falk talk 10:51, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

This:
"Death

Joe Paterno page
Please consider changing the content of is page. It is based on the Freeh report which basically was a PSU Board of Trustees' attempt to buy a scapegoat. Please consider adding a more relevant report "The Paterno Report" produced by Dick Thornberg and individuals like Clemente who have prepared a report more substantial than Freeh's slanderous fit against Joe Paterno. I appreciate the fight for justice and not where money can place blame. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.92.92.66 (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- The best place to make this request is here. Chances are nobody here at the help desk is very familiar with the details of these different reports and so it's hard for us to make a good determination regarding their relative reliability. The other editors at the Joe Paterno talk page will be much more familiar with the topic and can help you make appropriate changes to the article. Good luck. -Thibbs (talk) 23:28, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages articles must never take sides. Article content is required to be completely neutral, reliably-sourced and worthy of inclusion. Also, articles must give due weight to different sides of contentious issues. Therefore, your clearly biased views on the Paterno issue have no place in the article. For the record, the article includes content about his family's investigative rebuttal to the Freeh report. However, it certainly can be expanded. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 23:50, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Please add ROBERT COTTINGHAM as a notable people of NEWTOWN CT.
Hi there, I grew up in Newtwon CT. and after looking up the info written about Newtown on Misplaced Pages, I noticed under the "Notable people" section, that the list is missing Robert Cottingham (who happens to be my dad).
There is a wikipedia page written for him which explains "He is considered to be one of most important original Photorealist painters." Robert Cottingam and my mom Jane Cottingahm have lived in Newtown Connecticut for over 35 yeas. They still live on the same property...Blackman Farm (founded in 1758). Some of the barns are converted into studios. Robert is still an active painter and is very much an influence in the art world today.

- To "de-orphan" an article all you need to do it to create incoming links from other pages. That is, you need to edit other pages and create a link from them to the orphan article. This link will show what articles are currently linked to Oryn the Rebel. As long as there is a minimum of one incoming link from another actual article, you can simply remove the "orphan" tag at the top.
- To establish notability is a bit more difficult. You'll need to provide multiple "reliable sources" that discuss him and include them in the article. Right now I see a New York Times link and that's a good start. You'll need more of these high quality sources to establish that the subject of the article is notable. The notability and orphan tags at the top of the page at Oryn the Rebel have important links inside them that can help you understand how to provide proper sources. -Thibbs (talk) 23:22, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
