James Michael Edward Ward-Prowse (born 1 November 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Southampton. Originally a member of the club's academy system, Ward-Prowse was promoted to the Southampton first team in 2011. Primarily a central midfielder, he has also represented England at under-17 and under-19 levels.
Club career
Ward-Prowse was born in Portsmouth and is the son of John Ward-Prowse, a Farlington-based barrister. Although his family were Portsmouth supporters, he joined Southampton at the age of eight.
After playing youth football with their Academy, senior team manager Nigel Adkins announced on 24 October 2011 that Ward-Prowse would make his senior debut the next day, in a League Cup match against Crystal Palace. Ward-Prowse played the full 90 minutes of a 2–0 defeat. He started again on 7 January 2012, this time in the FA Cup against Coventry City, and scored the equalizing goal in a 2–1 victory. In 2012 he was promoted to the first team ahead of the clubs return to the Premier League.
He made his league debut on 19 August 2012, when he started Southampton's first game back in the Premier League against champions Manchester City, before being substituted after 66 minutes. On 19 November 2012, Ward-Prowse signed a new five-year contract with Southampton.
International career
Ward-Prowse has represented England at under-17 and under-19 level. He made his under-17 debut on 3 August 2010 in the Nordic Tournament, replacing Jake Forster-Caskey in the 66th minute of a 5-0 win against Finland.
