Arvind Kejriwal (born 16 August 1968) is an Indian politician and social activist. He was an Indian Revenue Service, IRS, official before joining social and political activities.

He was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership in 2006, for activating India's Right to Information movement at grassroots and social activities to empower the poorest citizens to fight corruption by holding the government answerable to the people. Kejriwal is also a Saathi (fellow) of the Association for India's Development, a Global Impact award winning NGO. In 2006 after resigning from IRS, he founded an NGO Public Cause Research Foundation(PCRF) by donating his Magsaysay award money as (charity) Corpus fund. In November 2012, he launched the Aam Aadmi Party, whose vision is Swaraj.

Personal life

Arvind was born in a Marwari family on 16 June 1968, in the Siwani village of Haryana to Gobind and and Geeta Devi.. He is the eldest of three siblings including a sister and a brother. His father was an engineer who graduated from the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. His paternal grandfather, Mangal Chand Bansal, was a businessman who acquired substantial landholdings and set up several businesses, including ventures in oil and cotton. Kejriwal spent most of his childhood in small north Indian towns like Sonepat, Mathura and Hissar. He did his schooling from Campus School.

Arvind Kejriwal studied mechanical engineering at IIT Kharagpur and joined Tata Steel right after his graduation and was posted at the company's Jamshedpur plant. Kejriwal quit his job with Tata Steel in 1992 and spent some time in Kolkata, the Ramakrishna Mission in North-East India and Nehru Yuva Kendra.

Arvind Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1992 after qualifying through the Civil Services Examination. In February 2006, he voluntarily resigned from the IRS as Joint Commissioner in the Income Tax Department.

Arvind Kejriwal is married to Sunita, who is also an IRS officer and his batchmate from National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. Presently, she is working as an Additional Commissioner in the Income Tax Department. The couple have two children, a daughter, Harshita, and a son, Pulkit. Arvind Kejriwal has written a book titled Swaraj.

Arvind Kejriwal is a vegetarian. Although he ate meat for a few months in college, he later gave it up. He has been practicing Vipassana for the past many years.

Public Life and Causes

Parivartan

In December 1999, while he was still in service with the Income Tax Department, he helped found a movement named Parivartan, focused on assisting citizens in navigating income tax, electricity and food ration matters in parts of Delhi. He believes "Change begins with small things". It also helped push policy makers to rethink a World Bank loan to privatize the Delhi's water supply. It also aids other groups in educating citizens nationwide about India’s Right to Information Act, which has proved very effective in Delhi in settling people’s grievances with government departments. It is studying the institutionalization of local self-governance, taking the model in rural areas in which a general body decides how much money should be spent and on what projects, and holds government officials to account if these plans are not implemented correctly.

Right to Information

Main article: Right to Information Act

Right to Information movement actually was started by Anna Hazare. The first campaign was organized at the Azad Maidan, Mumbai, in 1997 by Anna Hazare where Arvind Kejriwal too joined the movement. When Anna saw that Government is not willing to pass this law Anna went on an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan in the last week of July 2003. After 12 days of Hunger strike in Azad Maidan the President of India signed the draft of the Right to Information Act and ordered the state government to implement it with effect from 2002. The same draft was considered as the base document for the making of the National Right to Information Act-2005. Thereafter in July 2006, Arvind Kejriwal spearheaded an awareness campaign for RTI across India. Arvind has now instituted an RTI Award through his organisation in order to motivate others. Kejriwal has been using RTI in corruption cases in many government departments including the Income Tax Department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Delhi Electricity Board and others.

Jan Lokpal Bill

Main article: Jan Lokpal Bill

Jan Lokpal Bill movement actually started when Anna Hazare started a fast at Jantar Mantar on 5 April 2011. This got immense support from all over the country and the government was forced to form a joint drafting committee for Lokpal Bill. Arvind Kejriwal along with Prashant Bhushan, Shanti Bhushan, Santosh Hegde and Kiran Bedi drafted the Jan Lokpal Bill. As the bill was edited and revised time to time after country wide public consultations, it was known as the Jan Lokpal Bill i.e. the People's Lokpal bill. Rajan Bhagat, spokesman for Delhi Police, said police arrested Hazare under a legal provision that bans public gatherings and protests at the park in Delhi where Hazare was planning to begin his hunger strike. Activists were later released the same day although they spent two more days in the Tihar jail negotiating conditions put on protest. Kejriwal left the jail on 18 August and the protests started the following day from Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. After twelve days of protests and many discussions between the government and the activists, the parliament passed a resolution to consider three points in drafting of the Lokpal bill.

He accused Vadra of taking an interest-free loan of Rs. 650 million and heavy bargains on land from DLF Limited in exchange for political favors. He said the Haryana government gave 350 acres of land meant for a hospital to SEZ, of which Robert Vadra had 50% of shares in the SEZ project. Following this revealings, now transferred and the then Director General(Consolidation of Holdings – Haryana) Ashok Khemka had ordered to cancel about 3.531 acres of land holdings in Shikhopur village, Manesar, Gurgaon and its subsequent sell to DLF by companies associated to Mr. Robert Vadra.
Following this on 12 October 2012, Kejriwal and Kumar Vishwas along with some activists were detained by police while marching towards prime minister's residence demanding resignation and arrest of Union Minister Salman Khurshid over allegations of financial irregularities in functioning of Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust, an NGO run by his wife as Project Director and his mother being Chairperson of the trust.
This act was followed by a press conference held by Arvind Kejriwal in which he told the press that Salman Khurshid had threatened him. To counter Salman Kurshid's threat, Kejriwal said that he would go to Farrukhabad(Salman Kurshid's constituency) and would return safely from there as well. He also said that killing him won't help as the country has been awakened. Kejriwal also commented that Salman Kurshid had behaved and spoken in a language similar to that of a mafia don.
In continuation to the series of exposé, on 18 October 2012 Kejriwal alleged that Nitin Gadkari's (President of Bharatiya Janata Party), factories have robbed the farmers of Vidarbha in Maharashtra of their land and water. Kejriwal also said that Gadkari has many business interests, for which he has made arrangements for their protection. He accused that 100 acres of extra land that belonged to small farmers was transferred to companies owned by Nitin Gadkari in the garb of an irrigation project in Vidarbha. He also said that extra land was not returned to farmers, despite a Maharashtra government ruling. He also alleged that the water meant for the Vidarbha farmers was diverted to power and sugar units, some of which are owned by Gadkari. On 31 October 2012, Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan alleged that Reliance Industries (RIL) was favored by UPA and NDA government by providing them contracts on gas exploration in the KG basin at very cheap rates. Mukesh Ambani's RIL, however, clarified that the allegations were baseless and untrue.
On 9 November 2012 Kejriwal claimed in his series of exposés that several industrialists and politicians including Naresh Goyal, Yashovardhan Birla, the Burman family, Congress MP Anu Tandon, and others evaded tax by stashing away their alleged undisclosed wealth in HSBC bank accounts in Geneva. He claimed that the Government of India made little efforts to retrieve the money back and demanded clarification on the issue from President Pranab Mukherjee, who was then the Finance Minister. He claimed to have a list of 700 bank accounts that amounted to a total of ₹6,000 crore (US$720 million).
On 4 December 2012, Kejriwal and the members of AAP accused Narendra Modi for favoring Adani Group on power purchase and land allotment at cheap rates and also providing gas fields to two private companies, Jubilant Energy and Geo Global, for free. The Minister of State for Energy, Saurabh Patel, said that the charges were baseless and aimed at denigrating Modi's image.
