===Spring practice===

Marquise Williams, Bryn Renner's backup quarterback in the 2012 season, was not enrolled in classes at UNC in the spring semester.<ref></ref> UNC coach Larry Fedora said Williams may re-enroll at UNC during the summer.<ref></ref> After the spring football game in April 2013, Fedora said that if the season started, early enrollee freshman quarterback Mitch Trubisky would be the second string quarterback.<ref></ref>

Three early enrolled freshman played in the spring football game and recorded a stat: Jordan Fieulleteau (wide receiver, eight receptions, 7.4 yards per catch), Khris Francis (running back, 20 rushes, 5.1 yards per rush), walk-on safety Dominique Green (three tackles, one interception) and Mitch Trubisky (quarterback, 10 of 18, two interceptions, one touchdown). Early enrolee R.J. Prince (offensive tackle) was on the white roster (second team).

Kendrick Singleton played on the first team in the spring game at wide receiver after playing on defense in 12 games in the 2012 season. Only four of the 11 receivers that caught a pass in the spring game caught a pass in a game in the prior season.

===Other returners===
A player returning for 2013 season that did not start in 2012 is wide receiver/kick returner T.J. Thorpe. Thorpe played as a true freshman in the 2011 season and received honorable mention on the All-ACC team.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.goheels.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=667866&SPID=12962&DB_LANG=C&SITE=UNC&DB_OEM_ID=3350&ATCLID=205497671&Q_SEASON=2012 |title=T.J. Thorpe participated in spring practices in 2013 on a limited basis due to injury and did not appear in the spring game.<ref>http://www.news-record.com/home/1017857-63/unc-scrimmage-notes-the-defense</ref>

True freshman that had significant playing time on defense in 2012 included linebacker Shakeel Rashad, who played in 11 of the season's 12 games and had 18 tackles. True freshman defensive end Jessie Rogers also played in 12 games. On offense, true freshman Quinshad Davis led the team in receiving.

====Running back competition====
Due to the planned departure of 2012 starting running back ] to the NFL, the running back position for the 2013 season will be open for competition and may feature a committee of running backs as current offensive coordinator previously used as many as six running backs per season at Southern Miss.<ref>{{cite web|author=Turner Walston |url=http://www.tarheelmonthly.com/thm-daily/letters-from-camp-romar-morris |title=Letters from Camp: Romar Morris |publisher=Tar Heel Monthly |date=2012-08-07 |accessdate=2013-02-11}}</ref>

A.J. Blue (6'2", 225) was Bernard's primary backup in the previous season and Fedora has recognized Blue as more of a between-the-tackle runner.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://acc.blogs.starnewsonline.com/33844/unc-running-back-situation-in-good-hands-even-without-bernard/ |title=UNC running back situation in good hands even without Bernard | ACC Insider |publisher=Acc.blogs.starnewsonline.com |date=2012-12-14 |accessdate=2013-02-11}}</ref> Head coach Fedora's spread offense requires a fast running back to spread the field with both outside running and pass catching ability. Another returner that had playing time last season was Romar Morris (5'10", 180), a football and track athlete at North Carolina. Morris had a career-high 202 all-purpose yards in Carolina's 39-34 loss at Louisville last season (149 yards receiving, 23 yards rushing and 30 yards on kick returns). Fedora commented that 2013 recruits T.J. Logan and Khris Francis will probably play in the 2013 season.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2013/02/unc-signs-7-football-players-from-the-state |title=UNC signs 7 football players from the state |publisher=The Daily Tar Heel |date=2013-02-06 |accessdate=2013-02-11}}</ref>

The only other returning running back that had carries last season is Travis Riley. He played in two games in 2012 after injuring his knee in his true freshman season in 2011 and taking a redshirt year.

Incoming freshman running back Khris Francis (5'9", 195, 195th ranked running back in 2013 class<ref name="scout9">{{cite web|url=http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=4&pid=11&yr=2013 |title=Scout.com: Football Recruiting |publisher=Recruiting.scout.com |date= |accessdate=2013-02-11}}</ref>) enrolled at North Carolina in January 2013 and will participate in spring football practice. Rankings from AP Poll

The 2013 North Carolina Tar Heels football team will represent the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 2013 college football season. The team will be led by second year head coach Larry Fedora and will play their home games at Kenan Memorial Stadium. The Tar Heels will compete as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the Coastal Division.

Previous season

In his first year as head coach in a season that the UNC football team was ineligible for the ACC title, a bowl game and a ranking in the USA Today Coaches' Poll, Larry Fedora led the team to an 8-4 record. The offense finished the season ranked 14th out of 120 teams in terms of total yards per game. The defense finished the season ranked 56th out of 120 teams in terms of opponent total yards per game. North Carolina had at least eight victories in four of the five years from 2008 to 2012. The eight wins in 2008 and 2009 were vacated due to NCAA penalty. The last time North Carolina had more than eight victories was in 1997.

Recruiting

See also: American football positions, Glossary of American football, and Recruiting (college athletics)

Prior to National Signing Day, four high school players that graduated early and received scholarship offers to play football at North Carolina enrolled for the spring semester, allowing them to participate in spring practice. These included: quarterback Mitch Trubisky, wide receiver Jordan Fieulleteau, running back Kris Francis, and offensive tackle R.J. Prince. On February 6, 2013 thirteen additional players signed their National Letter of Intent to play at North Carolina that completed the 2013 recruiting class. Based on the March 2012 sanctions from the NCAA, North Carolina could only sign a maximum of 20 players per year for the next two years versus the regular limit of 25.

North Carolina's recruiting class was highlighted by five players from the "ESPN 300": No. 118 Brian Walker (CB); No. 159 Greg Webb (DT); No. 194 Johnathan Howard (WR); No. 219 Mitch Trubisky (QB); No. 275 Jordan Fieulleteau (WR). The Tar Heels signed the No. 42 recruiting class according to Rivals.com and the No. 29 recruiting class according to Scout.com. ESPN had North Carolina's class as the No. 21 recruiting class in the nation.

Returning starters

Out of the 10 returning starters on offense, left tackle James Hurst has the most career starts with 36. Hurst is the only returning Tar Heel among the four first-team selections from UNC to Phil Steele's 2012 All-ACC team. Returners Eric Ebron (tight end), Kareem Martin (defensive end) and Tommy Hibbard (punter) made the second-team; returner Bryn Renner (quarterback) made the third-team. Hurst is the only returning UNC player who was selected to the 2012 All-ACC first-team.

The returners on defense have more experience in terms of starts than the offense, with six players with more than 10 starts compared to four on the offense.

Defensive end Kareem Martin has the most career starts on defense with 28. He led UNC in 2012 with eight quarterback hurries, was third in sacks and tenth in tackles.

The most experienced returning unit will be the secondary, with all the 2012 starters returning. Returning safety Tre Boston led the team in tackles in 2012, averaging seven per game. Cornerback Tim Scott and safety Tre Boston received honorable mentions after the 2012 season in the All-ACC coaches poll. Boston was the ACC defensive back of the week twice in 2012.

A player returning for 2013 season that did not start in 2012 is wide receiver/kick returner T.J. Thorpe. Thorpe played as a true freshman in the 2011 season and received honorable mention on the All-ACC team. He did not play in the 2012 season after breaking his foot in a preseason practice. Thorpe participated in spring practices in 2013 on a limited basis due to injury and did not appear in the spring game.

Running back competition

Due to the planned departure of 2012 starting running back Giovani Bernard to the NFL, the running back position for the 2013 season will be open for competition and may feature a committee of running backs as current offensive coordinator previously used as many as six running backs per season at Southern Miss.

A.J. Blue (6'2", 225) was Bernard's primary backup in the previous season and Fedora has recognized Blue as more of a between-the-tackle runner. Head coach Fedora's spread offense requires a fast running back to spread the field with both outside running and pass catching ability. Logan and Khris Francis will probably play in the 2013 season.

The only other returning running back that had carries last season is Travis Riley. He played in two games in 2012 after injuring his knee in his true freshman season in 2011 and taking a redshirt year.

Incoming freshman running back Khris Francis (5'9", 195, 195th ranked running back in 2013 class) enrolled at North Carolina in January 2013 and will participate in spring football practice. T.J. Logan will join the team in Fall 2013 (5'11", 175, 28th ranked running back in 2013 class).).

A.J. Blue played running back and quarterback in high school.

Marquise Williams, Bryn Renner's backup quarterback in the 2012 season, was not enrolled in classes at UNC in the spring semester. UNC coach Larry Fedora said Williams may re-enroll at UNC during the summer. After the spring football game in April 2013, Fedora said that if the season started, early enrollee freshman quarterback Mitch Trubisky would be the second string quarterback.

April 2013

Three early enrollee freshman played in the spring football game and recorded a stat: Jordan Fieulleteau (wide receiver, eight receptions, 7.4 yards per catch), Khris Francis (running back, 20 rushes, 5.1 yards per rush), walk-on safety Dominique Green (three tackles, one interception) and Mitch Trubisky (quarterback, 10 of 18, two interceptions, one touchdown). Early enrolee R.J. Prince (offensive tackle) was on the white roster (second team).

Coaching staff

There were two changes to Larry Fedora's coaching staff after the 2012 season. Outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator David Duggan left North Carolina after one season to return to Southern Miss as defensive coordinator. Defensive line coach Deke Adams left North Carolina in January 2013 to coach the defensive line at South Carolina.
