Belle Foods, LLC is a family-owned chain of American supermarkets headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.
Information
Belle Foods is owned by father-and-son team Bill and Jeff White. The chain assumed operation of 57 stores, acquired from Southern Family Markets, on July 1, 2012. Store nameplates currently include Piggly Wiggly, Bruno's, and Food World, but all stores are expected to be rebranded to Belle Foods. The chain's stores are located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi. Belle Foods intends to use C&S Wholesale Grocers, former owner of Southern Family Markets, as its supplier. Belle Foods now offers Caroline's Carts. These are carts that are built for children with special needs. This is to make sure that parents and caregivers can easily shop without having to push around a wheelchair and a cart at the same time. Belle Foods also adopted the Simply Healthy labeling. It is a color coded labeling system that is convenient for the shopper to pick out the healthy products. Belle Foods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 1, 2013, exactly one year after its founding. The company plans to close 13 of its 57 stores by August 3, 2013 including five Food World locations in Hueytown, Gadsden, Florence, Decatur and Mobile in Alabama. Food World stores in Pensacola, Mary Esther and Niceville in Florida. Also set to close is a Piggly Wiggly store in Tifton, Georgia. They also must sell off assets to try reconciling a $42 million dollar debt.
Belle Jr.
Due to the fact that Belle Foods is tries to be family focused, they are creating an environment where it is easier for families to go shopping without the hassle and challenge of watching children. Belle Foods has introduced Belle Jr., which is a supervised area that customers can drop off kids so that they can play in a safe area while the customer is able to shop. The supervised area is available to children from the ages of 3 - 10. There are trained professionals that are in charge of the children. There are several toys, activities, and weekly crafts. There are several measures that were taken to ensure the safety of kids. The safety measures include the following:
- Kids are visible through glass wall panels and by real-time video monitoring, wand there are monitors placed throughout the store so customers can see what their child is doing at all times
- A parent and/ or guardian with child bracelet identification program
- A beeper system with instant accessibility to parents while they shop at Belle Foods
- All Belle Jr. staff members are thoroughly screened and are First aid and CPR trained
