"Here's to Never Growing Up"
Song

"Here's to Never Growing Up" is a song by Franco-Canadian recording artist Avril Lavigne. It was released as the lead single from her upcoming fifth studio album on April 9, 2013, by Epic Records. The song was written by Lavigne, David Hodges, Chad Kroeger, Jacob Kasher, and Martin Johnson, who also produced the track. In North America, Canada and Australia the song has since peaked at numbers 20, 17 and 15 so far in the Billboard Hot 100, Canadian Hot 100 and ARIA respectively.

Background

"I wanted to write something fun and summery. It's about being young, wanting to be young forever, living in the moment and having a blast."

—Avril Lavigne, 102.7 KIIS-FM Interview

"Here's to Never Growing Up" was written by Lavigne, David Hodges, Chad Kroeger, Jacob Kasher, and producer of the song Martin Johnson. The song was recorded in early 2013 at Henson Recording Studios. Lavigne announced the song would be released as the first single from her fifth studio album on February 8, 2013 via Twitter. On March 20, 2013, Lavigne announced the scheduled release date for the song to be April 9, 2013, and released an 11-second snippet of the track. Lavigne later released the single's official artwork via Twitter on April 3, 2013. On April 6, 2013, Epic Records released a 19-second snippet of the track and official lyric video. The song premiered on iTunes on April 9, 2013, and received its radio premiere the same day on On Air with Ryan Seacrest. The official lyric video for "Here’s to Never Growing Up", which is entirely made up of fan submitted photos and videos, was also released on April 9, 2013.

Critical reception

"Here's to Never Growing Up" (2013) A 21 second sample of Lavigne's "Here's to Never Growing Up", featuring the chorus referencing Radiohead.

The song received generally positive reviews upon release. Entertainment Weekly compared the song to Pink's "Raise Your Glass", Ke$ha's "We R Who We R", Rihanna's "Cheers (Drink to That)" (which samples Lavigne's "I'm with You"), and Lavigne's own "Complicated". PopJustice reacted positively to the song, saying, "Who would have guessed that Avril Lavigne would deliver one of 2013's most incredible choruses?" The Huffington Post declared that it had the potential to be the "first song of the summer". Billboard noted and reacted positively to Lavigne's reference to rock band Radiohead in the chorus.

Chart Perfomance

In the song's debut week, the song debuted at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Avril's 16th entry in the chart. The song reached a peak at number 20 in the week of June 29 due to a descount on Itunes, causing the song to surge from 23th to 7th in the Digital Songs with more than 131,000 downloads sold that week.

"Here's To Never Growing Up" debuted on ARIA Singles Chart at number 16 and one week later peaked at number 15. The song peaked at number 7 in Ireland, 8 in Scotland and 14 in the United Kingdom.

Music video

Directed by Robert Hales, with photography by Ketil Dietrichson and art direction by Lenny Tso. On April 8, 2013, Lavigne began shooting the music video for the song, the second day of the shooting was on April 19, confirmed by Lavigne on Twitter and the official premiere was on May 9. The video shows Avril playing with her band at a school during the Senior Prom. It also features scenes of Avril and her friends having a fun time at the school, eventually causing chaos. It also shows scenes of Avril singing in an empty classroom, that eventually shows all her friends dancing and having fun. The video makes allusions to Lavigne's first video for "Complicated", wearing the same outfit and skateboarding.

Live performances

Lavigne performed the song live for the first time on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on April 26, 2013. She also performed it on the semi-final results on Dancing with the Stars on 14 May, and on The Today Show on May 17, 2013. Avril sang the song on the Wango Tango on May 11, 2013. She also performed it on June 14 on Live! with Kelly and Michael, on June 15 on The Voice UK, and on June 16 on the 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards.
