The ninth season of the American animated television series, SpongeBob SquarePants, created by Stephen Hillenburg, originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States. The season was first announced on January 3, 2011, but premiered more than a year later on July 21, 2012. At that time when it was first announced, it was confirmed that the ninth season would be airing in 2012 but it wasn't known when. A total of 26 episodes were produced for the season, bringing the number of episodes up to 204, while passing the 200-episode milestone. The season debuted on July 21, 2012 with the episodes "Extreme Spots" and "Squirrel Record". This season is the first to have a transition to widescreen high-definition on regular-length episodes.
