Background
The Kapoors trace their origins to the city of Peshawar in what is now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Prithviraj Kapoor, the first of the family to pursue acting, was born in 1901 in the town of Samundri near Lyallpur, in the Punjab province of then British India (now in Pakistan). Prithviraj's father was a sub-inspector of police posted in Peshawar, and his grandfather was a Tehsildar in Samundri. Religiously, they practice Hinduism.
Though all three of Prithviraj Kapoor's sons, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor, became actors, it is Raj Kapoor's descendants who have carried on the family legacy. His sons, Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, went on to become well-known actors; his youngest son, Rajiv Kapoor, was not as successful as his brothers. Randhir Kapoor's and Babita's daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, have found success in the film industry. Rishi Kapoor's son, Ranbir Kapoor is Kareena and Karisma's cousin with Riddhima Kapoor Sahani and made his debut in 2007 in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya.
Nikhil Nanda, maternal grandson of Raj Kapoor is married to Shweta Bachchan, daughter of well known actor, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.
