Width of Page on browser

The article always appears toooooo wiiiiiiide on my browser.

Is there a way to fixing it? John wesley 13:51, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Arabic

This article is also a featured Arabic article as well as being a featured German article. How can stars be put beside the two languages on the left of the page as is done with portuguese? Jaw101ie 21:42, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Abbreviations on tables

Alright, Pts. stands for points, W, D, and L, stand for Wins draws and losses, but what do the rest stand for? I don't think I am the only american who will have trouble with the terminology.

Lee S. Svoboda tɑk 01:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

GF is 'goals for'; GA is 'goals against'; GD is 'goal difference'. I don't know why a two letter abbreviation is used for for and against though, the single letters F and A usually suffice. Are R, H and E explained in articles on Baseball? Jooler
I have no idead what R, H and E refers to in baseball. This is an interesting point as it has drawn attention to the tables listed under American sporting events. I have just looked at American "play-offs" and "Super Bowl XI", neither of which have (even) an abbreviation at the head of the columns in their tables. Should these be amended, I wonder? Alias Flood 04:22, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, we ought to remove these really, or give an explanation at the top of the page. --Robdurbar 10:02, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank You. Lee S. Svoboda tɑk 16:37, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
I have tried to make it clearer still by linking the meaning of the abbreviations to the tiebreaking criteria. Alias Flood 18:50, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Knockout stages

Can we please move the Knockout stages section to the very top, like in 2006_Stanley_Cup_Playoffs#Playoff_bracket? It makes the pertinent information of what team is playing what very clear, and shows how many more teams they must play, etc. Show the "big picture" first, and then let the user read further to other sections to see the details.--Sonjaaa 17:17, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

If the tournament was a straight knockout I might agree, but the group stages would make this confusing. Oldelpaso 18:18, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Agreed with Oldelpaso. "Who plays who" is detail, isn't it? I think the information is presented in logical (and chronological) order. - Slow Graffiti 20:54, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Serbia + Montenegro

Im not sure about this 'trivia' that Serbia and Montenegro are the only football team not to belong to a country and use a country flag.

England is not a country, and St. George's flag is never used officially, so why doesn't this count?

To many people, England is a country. Serbia and Montenegro is no longer a country, so it is trivia. --Differentgravy 18:20, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

England is a country although it is not a state (which I think is what the comment alluded to with Serbia and Montenegro) they are one of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom. So I can see the formers point about the dubious bit of trivia, or at least its wording, perhaps a mention that Serbia and Montenegro have split into separate states and this will be their last outing (at least in the World Cup) as a united team might be worthwhile. Idea...

I know FIFA does a match report at the end of the game, I think it would be a good idea to link that match report next to the score of the game. What do you think? It'll give more information (i.e. subs used, cautions/ejections, etc.) I'm not sure how much work it would take, but i'm sure its not a lot. Here is the Match Report for the Germany - Costa Rica game if anyone is unfamiliar. Linking it to each game would also serve as the reference point for any disputes on things such as scoring times. Any thoughts? Batman2005 18:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

I think that's a good idea, and it should be implemented. One random question about the report: How could Costa Rica have commited more fouls than Germany suffered? — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 18:56, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Hell, I have no idea. Batman2005 19:03, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Offsides - these don't count towards "penalties suffered" on the individual tallies, and therefore when these are totalled, the offsides form the difference. I'm looking into how to incorporate these reports into the main page --Daniel.Bryant

  • Anybody know what the best way to go about doing this is? I was thinking of somehow making the score link to the external fifa match report. Any thoughts?
That would work, or putting it as a Match Report link under the referee information. Arsonal 22:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree, I'm just not savy enough to do it! Batman2005 23:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Number of venues

In the venues section, it indicats, that there are 11 cities selected, I am not very familiar with Germany's geography, but, should not this indicate 12 cities?

fixed. Batman2005 18:31, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Print out

There table should be in the form of a poster availible to print out :) like availible as pdf. even if it was just like a basic table for use on wikipedia,--Wolfmankurd 18:41, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

That's not really within the scope of an encyclopedia article, but plenty of other sites will have that sort of thing. Is this what you are looking for? Oldelpaso 18:54, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Indeed, this isn't the place. Check the BBC website (bbc.co.uk) and the official FIFA website (fifa.com). - Slow Graffiti 20:50, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Top goal scorers

Should we insert a table with the top goalscorers? Perhaps only including those who have scored at least two goals. jacoplane 19:12, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

"Pots"

In the U.S., what we have here as "pots" are called "pools," or sometimes "groups." Is there a well-established tradition of calling them "pots" somewhere else?--Mike Selinker 19:47, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

It is the term used by the FIFA (as seen on its own website). - Slow Graffiti 20:48, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

I think the term also applies to the actual pots that were holding the balls during the draw. They were a bowl-like-pot-shaped thing. I don't think it really matters though, I'd stick with pots cause i'm lazy and don't feel like changing it. Batman2005 20:58, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

The map of participating countries

It's not exactly a huge thing, but the Falkland Islands have been coloured in, suggesting that they are part of Argentina - this, for an Englishman such as I, is irritating. It'd be nicer to have this changed, as either way, the Falklands aren't competing. Zxczxc87 19:54, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

I hadn't noticed that but I agree - it's a disgrace!!! Whoever uploaded the image, please update it. DJR (Talk) 20:01, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
The original file was in WiikiMedia Commons and didn't have the Falklands filled in. Some user uploaded a new version with it filled in. I have just reverted to the non-filled in version. The file was still being used by German Misplaced Pages. Worth keeping an eye on. Jooler 21:43, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

and what about poland vs equador?

and what about poland vs equador? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.65.62.91 (talkcontribs)

What about it? - Slow Graffiti 20:46, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree. What about it? - Zepheus 21:11, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Editing Names

Please can we keep the first initial for goalscorers names - someone keeps editing them out. Teams such as England (Cole - Joe and Ashley) have the same surnames and to be consistent it would be good to add the forename initial to all goalscorers

It is traditional to only put the first initial when two or more people in a team share the same surname, as is the case with Carlos and Edwin Tenorio from Ecuador. Otherwise, just write the last name in the article: it's fine as it is. Regulus Tera 21:28, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Removing Official video game Section

Main article: 2006 FIFA World Cup (video game)

2006 FIFA World Cup is the official computer and video game for the World Cup. As with the previous World Cup game, 2002 FIFA World Cup, it is being published by EA Sports. I removed the section because It carries no information about world cup but some advertisement

That's ridiculous, this game is absolutely relevant to the World Cup as its the Official Game, just as there is an official mascot, official website, official name, etc. There is no harm at all in mentioning the game and its maker and including a link to the game article. I could POSSIBLY see it if there were 8 or 10 World Cup Games, but the Official Game absolutely warrants mention in the article. Batman2005 23:23, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
