Gender issues in India
As in most other universities and colleges of India, VIT University also has much more restrictive “hostel rules” for female students, relative to their male counterparts. Opponents of gender inequity regard this as evidence of gender discrimination at VIT, while VIT officials claim that stricter female hostel rules are a necessary safety precaution, as the crimes against young women in particular are very high in India. According to a global poll conducted by Thomson Reuters, India is the "fourth most dangerous country" in the world for women, and the worst country for women among the G20 countries.
In October 2013, two female students were reprimanded (their parents took them home) after they helped to organize an online opinion survey of female VIT students, focusing on issues of female safety and inequality. Only less than 10% the total girl students living in the VIT University female hostel took part in the survey even after knowing well that their identity will never be revealed.
