Filming began on October 9, 2013 in the downtown where various establishments were changed to resemble a "beach community." Filming is expected to be completed on November 5. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 13, 2015.

Production

Development

Following the release of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004, Julia Pistor, one of its producers, stated that a sequel is unlikely, despite the film's successful box office performance. In 2010, Nickelodeon reportedly had been approaching the crews of SpongeBob SquarePants to do another film based on the series. Nickelodeon has long wanted to do a relationship with Paramount to release another SpongeBob film to help reinvigorate the series on the network, whose ratings have declined a bit recently. However, internal disagreement delayed collaborations. On February 28, 2012, during a Deutsche Bank media and telecom investor conference in Palm Beach, Florida, Philippe Dauman, the president and CEO of Viacom, Paramount's parent company, announced a sequel to the 2004 film is in development and was slated for an unspecified 2014 release. He initially stated "We will be releasing a SpongeBob movie at the end of 2014, which will serve to start off or be one of our films that starts off our new animation effort." The film was reported by Paramount to have a budget similar to the previous film and would not cost more than $100 million to produce. Nickelodeon expected the film to do much better overseas than the 2004 feature, given Nickelodeon's increasingly global reach. Dauman said "This will continue to propel SpongeBob internationally."

Originally commissioned under the title The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2, the film will be directed by the series' executive producer and showrunner, Paul Tibbitt, written by Kung Fu Panda writers, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, produced by Mary Parent, and executive produced by series creator Stephen Hillenburg.

On August 1, 2013, Paramount officially announced the title of the feature film as SpongeBob SquarePants 2 and announced it would be released on February 13, 2015. During a casting call for the live action scenes, it was stated that the film plot point will follow "a fun day at the beach."

Casting

The regular series main cast members was reportedly returning to reprise their roles. The film stars Tom Kenny as SpongeBob SquarePants, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward Tentacles, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Mr. Lawrence as Plankton, and Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks. On August 22, 2013, the casting directors began casting calls for the background extras for the live action scenes. On September 21, 2013, it has been reported that Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has been cast for a live action role as a pirate. Banderas will also voice the character in the animated segments of the film.

Animation

The sequel will be a combination of traditional animation and live action as its predecessor was. Following the release of the SpongeBob SquarePants 4D: The Great Jelly Rescue, a 3D short film, in early 2013 at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort Orlando, the executives also talk of perpetuating the 3D stereoscopy in the SpongeBob feature film.

Filming

The film features live action scenes directed by Mike Mitchell. Filming began on September 30, 2013 and will last through November 5, 2013 on sound stages in Savannah, Georgia, locations in downtown, and on Tybee Island. The Savannah Film Office first announced that the film would shoot live action scenes in Savannah for 40 days on July 11, 2013. City of Savannah Film Services director Jay Self said " we are very excited to be working with Paramount on this project We know from experience how valuable the investment and exposure generated by a project like this can be for our community." The producers of the film were permitted to film on Tybee Island after meetings held at the Tybee Island City Hall with businesses and residents that imposed concerns about the possible effects of the filming that would affect them, and also the apprehensions about sea turtle safety. Will Hammargren, location specialist for the Savannah Film Office, said the film is expected to contribute $8 million to the city's economy, including booking at least 5,600 hotel room nights.

On September 30, 2013, the start of production filming was interrupted when Jay Self, the director of the Savannah Film Office, was fired. According to a memo from Joe Shearouse, bureau chief of the leisure services department of Savannah, Self was dismissed for his "failure to properly plan and manage the arrangement for the movie." The memo accused Self of shortcomings surrounding the filming of the film and also cited complaints from local businesses, residents, and others. A reported reason for the firing of Self was a disagreement between Paramount and the Savannah Film Office, about the deal of granting the local businesses to negotiate with Paramount for potential business losses during filming.

In preparing the filming location in the downtown Savannah, the film crew painted storefronts along Broughton Street to resemble a "beach community" called "Salty Shoals", in order to let businesses and residents know how the production will be impacting downtown. Jay Self said "They're trying to make it look like it's right at the seaside." The Garden on the Square, a local flower shop in Savannah, was converted into a surf shop for the film. Store owner Betty Dicamillo said "I'm really excited It's good for Savannah." The Jen Library of the Savannah College of Art and Design was also converted into a sea museum. Other establishments like a convenience store and a coffeehouse were converted to fudge and buoy shops, respectively. Self said "The changes are temporary with all buildings scheduled to be restored to their original colors after filming is complete." Most of the disruption that affected the town was caused by filming equipment.
