Garrett Nicholas Wittels (born May 11, 1990) is an American professional baseball infielder, most recently for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He played college baseball at Florida International University Golden Panthers in Miami, Florida. Wittels is Jewish.

Hitting streak

Wittels finished the 2010 season with a 56-game hitting streak, two hits shy of Robin Ventura's 58-game streak, the Division I record, set in 1987. Wittels is an infielder, mainly shortstop, and a pitcher for his team. He wore the number 10. Wittels was nominated for the Best Male College Athlete ESPY Award for his 2010 performance. Prior to the 2011 season, he was named to a NCBWA and Louisville Slugger/TPX Preseason All-American. He finished his FIU career hitting .352 with 7 HR and 116 RBI over the course of three seasons.

False rape accusation

On December 27, 2010, Wittels and two friends were falsely accused of raping a 17-year-old girl at the Nassau, Bahamas' Atlantis Resort and Casino. The charges were dropped by the Bahamian attorney general on June 20 after evidence pointed to an elaborate plot by the father of one of the girls to extort money from the Atlantis. Multiple reports indicated that footage from the security camera appeared to contradict the women's story. Wittels' attorney said the accusations stemmed from an apparent attempt to extort money from the Atlantis resort. Several years prior the father of one of the accusers reportedly planned to hire a woman to claim falsely she was raped at a professional sporting event.

Professional career

After his college career ended, he signed with the Cardinals and began playing for the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League where he finished the 2011 season hitting .262 with eight doubles, a triple, and thirteen RBIs. The Cardinals released him in October 2012, re-signed him the following February. In 2012 he played for Batavia (NYPL; A-), Quad Cities (MIDW; A), Springfield (TL; AA), and Memphis (PCL; AAA), batting a combined .243.
