Hello WikiProject Ice Hockey/Participant

I am an advisor to the National Hockey League. With your help over the next few months I plan to review and correct any information on wikipedia relating to the National Hockey League, its franchises, players, executives and partership organisations. I am here to provide you with information. Your work is appreciated. --NHLsource 18:07, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Featured topic Drive

Hi, as you may or may not know, some of us at WP:HOCKEY have banded together and are trying to get the various NHL Trophy pages to FT status. It is a big job and if you would be willing to offer any assistance, it would be most appreciated. You can find out more here. Thanks for the time, Scorpion 21:33, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Prod's

You might want to look where it mentions that they have to play 5 seasons or 100 games in a high level minor league like the AHL or ECHL. That in order to qualify if they have only played in the UHL/CHL they have to have won a major award etc. Which as far as I can find none of those 3 have. The whole purpose of these requirements were to avoid articles being created for exactly this sort of player who barely even made it to the ECHL. If I recall correctly some people didn't even want the ECHL included.--Djsasso 18:36, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Since these have now been AFD'ed, I'll take the discussion there. -- JamesTeterenko 19:27, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Removed prod for Jessica Moore

Few reasons for this. First, erotic horror and porn are completely different. Failing to meet WP:PORNBIO is as irrelevant as failing WP:PROF if you aren't one. Subject needs to meet general or Entertainers. She's 1/2 way to general with one independent source. Second, the article was less than 8 hours old, so it's a bit quick to go for a prod on something with a legitimate claim for notability. I tagged it notability, hopefully the article creator will improve it from here. You said the only source was IMDB, but the only thing in IMDB that appears here is her real name and DOB. Horrorshowj 09:03, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

That's fair. Thanks for letting me know and giving your justification. I did realize that she was half porn and half horror. However, I used the porn guideline because it was more specific and detailed than the WP:BIO entry on Entertainers. I should have acknowledged her non-porn in my rationale. I didn't realize that the article was just created, but I do still believe that she is not notable. I was tagging articles that I came across that were related to Thomas Fisher, which was already deemed not notable. They both acted in Dead Rain. I did do a little research, and I could not find anything which would suggest that she would meet any notability guideline in Misplaced Pages. Since it was a new article creation and my prod nomination was weak, I'll give a bit of time for someone to assert the notability and provide reliable sources. -- JamesTeterenko 14:43, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Duncan Mackay

Good catch on this one. I was thinking it was a copyvio when I discovered it, but I wasn't quite sure how to handle it. I just cleaned up what was there and assumed someone else would spot it. Little did I know it actually should have been redirected to an already-existing article! Again, good catch. Way to keep on top of things. :) Skudrafan1 23:51, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. The copyvio wasn't too hard to find. I Googled a suspicious phrase, and found it right away. Since he was clearly notable, I figured I would write a quick stub. Once I had the stub partially written I realized he was in the HHOF. So, I knew that an article had to exist. It probably took me a bit too much effort to get to that point, but I got it. -- JamesTeterenko 00:14, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't realize he would have been under Mickey Mackay. So, what your saying for the next time I make an article I can use text from a book but I have to re-arrange and add words to sentences?--Mister Hockey 05:32, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
No problem about the article title. It took me a while to notice that it was a duplicate, and I have been editing on Misplaced Pages for years. Also, Skudrafan is another long time editor and didn't notice it either (see above). The beauty of a wiki is that you can continue to improve it over time and other people find ways of making your work better. In terms of using text from a book, you must write it in your own words. When you use a book for information, you have to be careful not to take any full sentences out of it. One trick that I use when writing an article is to make point form notes of the facts that I want to include. Then, I put the sources away and combine the point form notes into sentences and paragraphs. This way, everything comes out in my own words. I'll admit that it has been a while since I have created an article of substantial length, but it does get easier as you get more practice doing it. -- JamesTeterenko 15:23, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Dear JamesTeterenko! You are receiving as you are a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey There's been more new thing going on at WP:HOCKEY, and I think this will help you to stay informed. Since the last newsletter sent out in August, there's been great changes. Read on to find out! Maxim(talk)

This just in:
Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has just been promoted to featured list status, while the bot was delivering the newsletter. Maxim(talk) 02:02, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

And I've just promoted Art Ross Trophy. And Clarence S. Campbell Bowl is at FLC. This should be the last update. Maxim(talk) 00:40, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
edit New recognized content

By Maxim

Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.

  1. Hart Memorial Trophy
  2. James Norris Memorial Trophy
  3. Vezina Trophy
  4. Conn Smythe Trophy
  5. Frank J. Selke Trophy
  6. Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
  7. Lester B. Pearson Award
  8. Calder Memorial Trophy
  9. Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
  10. King Clancy Memorial Trophy
  11. Jack Adams Award
  12. Presidents' Trophy
  13. List of Calgary Flames players

There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.

  1. The last one, List of Calgary Flames players, is the only one not associated with the featured topic drive.
  2. At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".

edit Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1. Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2. James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3. Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4. Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5. Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6. Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7. Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8. Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9. Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10. King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11. Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12. Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13. Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14. Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

Thanks for the message, and the link. I suppose I just assumed (I know, almost always a risky proposition) that Canadian spelling was identical to the Brits. My error. Of course, if that is the biggest mistake I make this week, I'll be doing well. Cheers! ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 22:07, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

I think he may be back. I believe that user:50Goals is a sock, as he made an edit to the IHHOF page in which he added an "expand" template, then added excess details about the IHHOF to Stanley Cup. -- Scorpion 04:30, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Picture Question

I have been going through a lot of junior teams, and many of them have logos that have been flagged on their talk pages for not having the full template filled out for fair use. If I go through and update them, can I remove that note, or is it something that needs to be processed somehow? Thanks! Leafschik1967 (talk) 16:46, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

If you have addressed the concern noted, then you can just remove the tag. There is nothing more that needs to be done. If you missed something, someone will point it out. -- JamesTeterenko (talk) 02:49, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

edit Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY.

edit Notes
  • More editors are needed to help out with the newsletter. The newsletter creator doesn't have an infinite nor perfect supply of ideas, and thus he might omit some interesting news.
  • Portal:Ice hockey is being considered for featured status.

Tom Welch

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Tom Welch, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Misplaced Pages is not" and Misplaced Pages's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Tom Welch. Dmitry Bortniansky

Hi, James. You created Bortniansky's article on 8 June 2004, with the birth date 28 October 1725, which has stood the test of time ever since. We're wondering where the birth date came from. It doesn't appear to be listed in music encyclopedias. Also, whether it's a Julian or a Gregorian date. Cheers. -- JackofOz (talk) 04:03, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I added two links that I just found that state the date. -- JamesTeterenko (talk) 21:30, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Maybe I didn't explain my concern properly. It's agreed he was born in 1751, but I'm wondering about the precise date "28 October". The two sources that you've added support 1751, but make no mention of 28 October. Unless I've missed it. -- JackofOz (talk) 03:25, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Library and Archives Canada

Hello, how are you? Right now I am working on trying to improve the Hugh MacLennan article and hope to add a picture. I notice you uploaded the Robertson Davies picture, from the Library and Archives Canada site. There is a Hugh MacLennan pic here at Library and Archives ] but I am a little confused about the licensing requirements. I have uploaded pictures onto Misplaced Pages before where I wrote to the copyright holder and asked for permission, but did you have to do that for the R. Davies pic? If so, I see it wouldn't have been through GNU licensing, which is what I always have asked for when getting permission. On the R. Davies picture page, one of the info boxes says, "This work has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder," but another info box says, "Library and Archives Canada does not allow free use of its copyrighted works." Also, here ] it sounds like I have to write to them for permission, but I'm just wondering if I'm not asking them for GNU Licensing, what kind of licensing am I asking them for?

Thanks very much in advance! Have a good day, Moisejp (talk) 02:44, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

James, thank you for the info. OK, I think maybe I will try contacting someone who has contributed to the page you sent me for the link for. Maybe they'll know what the most up-to-date rules/procedures are. Thanks again! Moisejp (talk) 02:12, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Although the picture itself has "Restrictions on use: nil" written for it, from this ] it seems pretty risky to try to use it. I guess I'm going to just give up for now and maybe try to hunt down a free-use picture from another source at some point. Thanks again. Moisejp (talk) 02:27, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Misplaced Pages:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.

MSU Interview

Dear JamesTeterenko,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 22:58, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
