VIT University has much more restrictive “hostel rules” for female students, relative to their male counterparts. Opponents of gender inequity regard this as evidence of gender discrimination at VIT, while VIT officials claim that stricter female hostel rules are a necessary safety precaution.<ref name="article1">, “When It Comes to College Rules, It's All Down to Safety” The Hindu, 6 June 2013.</ref><ref name="article2">,“Two VIT Students Sent Home for Dissent” The Hindu, 11 October 2013.</ref><ref name="article3">,“Kept Away from Commotion” The Hindu, 11 October 2013.</ref>
In October 2013, two female students were reprimanded (their parents were required to take them home) after they helped to organize an online opinion survey of female VIT students, focusing on issues of female safety and inequality.<ref name="article2"/><ref name="article3"/><ref name="article4">,VIT Female Student Survey Results</ref> Only less than 10% the total girl students living in the VIT University female hostel took part in the survey even after knowing well that their identity will never be revealed. In such a survey among other revelations, the survey indicated that roughly 84% of respondents were dissuaded "from speaking out publicly against VIT’s management decisions" by "fear of expulsion, suspension or other academic devastation".<ref name="article4"/>
