There are many jobs at the Zoo. And Many Many happy workers. Pick a job that needs doing. And be happy. Leaving the Zoo is always an option. I love this Zoo. Maybe that's the difference. To modify something

To modify something you wrote, the way to do it is to use the <ins> and <del> tags. For example, if you wrote this: "The sun is cold." and you wanted to correct it in a Talk page conversation, you should do it like this: "The sun is <del>cold</del> <ins>hot</ins>." 1. Please briefly describe what vandalism is.

   A: Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Misplaced Pages. Some examples of typical vandalism are adding obscenities and crude humor to a page, illegitimately blanking pages, and inserting obvious nonsense into a page.

2. Am I allowed to get in an edit war while reverting vandalism?

   A: No. Reporting the vandal to an administrator is a better solution.

   Technically, you are. But yes, seeking a sysop is much better.

   Good to know that but edit warring kind of plays in the vandals desire to play a game. To me, vandalism is a kids game that I'd rather not play.

3. What should I do after I spot vandalism? (3 steps)

   A: 1) Make sure it really IS vandalism rather than an innocent mistake, 2)Revert the vandalism by viewing the page's history and selecting the most recent version of the page prior to the vandalism, 3) Warn the vandal with the appropriate warning template.

4. Please list 3 ways how to spot vandalism.

   A: 1) Keeping an eye on your own watchlist for suspicious edits, 2) checking the "user contribution" page of an identified vandal to discover other vandalous acts,

   Oooopps!! 3)Scanning "recent changes", looking for large changes or likely culprits. Some wild goose chasing but working toward increasing an ability to spot vandals.

5. If an entire article is vandalism, what should you do?

   A: Request Speedy Deletion by adding one of the speedy deletion templates.

6. Is making test edits considered vandalism?

   A: No. Users sometimes edit pages as an experiment. Such edits, while prohibited, are treated differently from vandalism. These users should be warned using the uw-test series of user warning templates, or by a talk page message including, if appropriate, a welcome and referral to the Misplaced Pages sandbox, where they can continue to make test edits without being unintentionally disruptive. Registered users can also create their own sandboxes as a user subpage. If a user has made a test edit and then reverted it, consider placing the message Welcome to Misplaced Pages. • IPVandal #1---- I would use a level 1 warning. Having said that, I just checked his recent contributions and found this which he did at the same article a month ago and this vandalism he also did about a month ago. This shows that I should investigate a bit first before deciding on the level of warning to be issued. 1. Why should new users be given level 1 warnings when possible?

   A: A level 1 warning is the least "aggressive" warning. It is a gentle caution used for unconstructive edits. Hopefully it wakes the new editor up without the accusation of vandalism.

2. What level(s), if vandalism persists after the warning, can a user be reported to AIV and blocked for disruptive editing for vandalizing

   A: Levels 3 and 4. Level 3 warns that if the vandalism continues you "may" be blocked. Level 4 makes it clear that if acts of vandalism continue you WILL be blocked.

3. What level warning(s) mention that an editor could be blocked?

   A: Levels 3 and 4.

Please name which edit warning you would issue to a user in the following scenarios

1. A new user blanking sections.

   A: {{uw-test1}} or {{uw-delete1}}. Due to the possibility of unexplained good-faith content removal, blanking should not necessarily be considered vandalism. Conversely, some blanking is obviously vandalism (a whole article, for instance) and should be reverted and the editor warned with level 3 or 4.

2. Nonsense/Repeating characters.

   A: This may be just a test edit by a new editor. Level 1.

3. Replacing an article with obscenities.

   A: Using obscenities is a conscious thought and act by the vandalizing editor. It is not a mistake and it should have serious consequences. At least a Level 3 warning.

4. How should vandalism be reverted (without Rollback)?

   A: Use "Un-do" to revert the vandalism. If not possible because of subsequent edits, revert by deleting the vandalism and returning the article to its pre-vandalism state taking into consideration edits that followed it.

5. Should section blanking-edits be reverted?

   A: Yes, of course. Whenever a negative change is discovered any editor should revert back to the last good or quality edit.

6. Should test edits be reverted?

   A: Yes, of course. They are like litter and should be removed just as a clean-up of the article. They most likely are not vandalism. a Level 1 warning should do.

7. What is the difference between a test edit and vandalism?

   A:A test edit is usually an experiment by a novice editor that either doesnt know how to remove it or just forgets to remove it. It's innocent and un-intentional. Vandalism is a conscious attack of the pages of the encyclopedia. It can be considerable or minor, but the vandal knows what he is doing.

Fallentvd seems to fit the bill. His blanking of the page and then inserting new edits in a completely non-Misplaced Pages format seems to be more than just innocent religious fanaticism (if religious fanaticism can ever be innocent).

1. Find a user you'd report at WP:AIV for vandalism.

Hi, Buster: Looking pretty good. Still needs work tho. The section titled school district is unreferenced mostly. I would just lose the stuff on the scholarships. Maybe keep the $22 million if you can ref it, but definitely lose the National merit thing. That isn't really a big deal...my grad class got 15. the library award should be referenced.

Most importantly, the demographics must be referenced. If the districts website don't have it, there are websites that have it. I will have to look and I really don't have time today...coordinating a community thanksgiving feast.3

Lastly, we don't use titles (?...do you mean in the infobox .....Dr. Dana T. Bedden.... ) and we don't use the flag icon on school articles  Done.

MOS says that when we name people we do not use titles (except for military and heraldic, and then only the first instance in an article), unless the person has a sexually ambiguous name like francis. We also do not use middle initials unless they are needed for clarity, and in the body of the article (not in infobox or captions) we use the whole name the first time and just the last after that. STiki

It's easy. After you download the file you unzip it. Then the executable file there, which you can move to your desktop or wherever, is what you click on to activate STiki. You plug in your user name and PW and that's it. The rest is self-explanatory. The trick is not how to use it but when to stop using it. I assume you're familiar with the various options. Reading from bottom to top: you can ignore the edit on your screen (Innocent), you can pass the ball to another user (Pass), you can revert it as a Good Faith edit (with various options for a message to the user, including no message), and you can revert it as Vandalism. Usually I don't issue a warning, as for the most part vandals are children and a warning would just encourage them. But your mileage may vary.

Using STiKi for a while, you get a sense about the vast amount of vandalism going on at all times, as well as the strange assortment of trivia that warrants Misplaced Pages articles. Coretheapple (talk) 19:26, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Project page (aka, Petra canvassing again!!!)

Hi there Buster,

Thank you for yet another friendly note of support. We do get kicked in the ankles a lot around here, and every once in a while, an 'atta boy' can do wonders.

I wondered if you could give me some advice. I have a project I need to put together so that various editors can work together, but I want to keep it very simple for now, so that we aren't mired in talk but rather can get straight to work in article space. This project is to review recent edits made by a team with a stated POV to a whole slew of articles. The edits need to be reviewed, and each section then researched/fact-checked and re-done accordingly. So the work is enormous, and I think the best way forward is to stay very organized and very simple. If editors want to help with the project, I want the process to be very smooth. We all have limited time, and this isn't going to be fun to begin with. A streamlined Project Page could be the key to success.

Follow-up

Buster, I'm calling it like it is. It's all too easy for folks to hide behind a computer screen and behave insensitively to each other. Like I say, I have never experienced anything like this before in the writing arena, ever. To say that someone is simply doing their job in what was done with this article reflects the need for better policies on Misplaced Pages. I have never experienced anyone to make such sweeping changes, at any time throughout my career in writing, without first consulting with the writers. To do so is a professional courtesy that I see is not followed here. That's not the way it's done here on Misplaced Pages, as I see now, but that doesn't mean its right or that such behavior can't be improved. This new editor has not been hardened to the WP editing process. New editors respond poorly to the Pain of Loss. To them losing their article/entry/edit and all the hard work involved is monumental and crushing. Buster, would you take a look at the edit history of the editor that has added to the BP talk page (at the bottom) and many others that are related to energy. S/he has been adding copies of this edit to articles because s/he "needs to know" about sustainability issues. IMO, it is improper editing and should be deleted. Thoughts? 1. Which is the difference between being disruptive and being a vandal?

1. A: An editor can be disruptive by being un-civil. Edit warring is disruptive but it is not vandalism. An editor can be disruptive by not accepting consensus when it is achieved. An editor can be disruptive by taking a conversation completely off-topic and thereby "disrupting" the natural problem-solving environment necessary to edit. But these are not acts of vandalism. Even if misguided, willfully against consensus, or disruptive, good-faith efforts to improve the encyclopedia are not vandalism. Mislabelling good-faith edits as vandalism can be considered harmful. Intentionally making abusive edits to Misplaced Pages is considered vandalism and will eventually lead to a block. A judgment call needs to be made: What is the INTENT of the offending editor?

1. Deleting comments from other user's talk pages can be considered vandalism?

   A:Adding insults, profanity, etc. to user pages or user talk pages is vandalism. Extremely offensive material may be removed on sight by any editor and the act of removal should not be considered vandalism. While editors do not own their User and Talk pages, there is an unspoken respect for another editors domain. It does happen that one editor will ban or prohibit another editor from commenting/editing on "my talk page". In these cases repeated incursion by the unwelcome visitor might be considered vandalism. 2. The removal of sourced content can be considered as vandalism? WP:Verifiability

   A: It "can" be vandalism but most times (?) it is innocent. There can be situations where the reference does not truly verify the information or where the current reference has become outdated and needs to be replaced with more current info or where the reference is now a dead link. Material that fails verification may be tagged or removed. Any editor who removes verification has an obligation to articulate specific problems that would justify its exclusion from Misplaced Pages.

3. A violation of the three-revert rule should be reported to AIV?

   A: Violations of the three-revert rule should be reported to the Administrators' noticeboard/3RR page. AIV/Administrator intervention against vandalism is for reporting users currently engaging in persistent, clear vandalism.

4. Are IPs blocked indefinitely for vandalism?

   A: IP addresses cannot be considered vandalism-only accounts, as IP addresses are sometimes shared by many devices (by way of network address translation or a proxy server), and many are reassigned to another computer after a period of time. However, if an IP address has been used only or mostly for vandalism over a long period of time, it is often included in Category:IP addresses used for vandalism. These IP addresses may be subject to very long blocks, up to a year and occasionally even longer, but are almost never blocked indefinitely.

   A: Not so obviously offensive. If it were just "Dick of the East" it might be OK but "The" adds a sexuality that may be offensive to some. Also, "The Dick" could refer to abusive, aggressive, anti-social intentions on the part of the editor so named. WP:Don't be a dick comes to mind. .

3. Arse Nal

   A: "Arse" is generally considered the socially acceptable way to say, "Ass". More humorous than harmful or inappropriate.

4. TheGreatestVandalOnEarth

   A: This Username advocates, encourages, and condones vandalism. Blockable

5. Push My Tongue

   A: I don't see this username as inappropriate, per se. I get the sexual connotation but it may be remote enough to be allowable. Not sure.

6. Big Rape

   A: This Username will generally be seen as having the same effect as condoning the behavior (rape). Blockable

Seeking Your Help

I need your help with regard to user:Czar and his/her deletions on two pages; Dix Hills, NY and Todd Baker. First, on the Todd Baker page, Czar has changed an administrator's earlier deletion of unnecessary tags. This happened as a result of a high school class adding Mr. Baker to the notable residents section of the Dix Hills page. We have been asked by Czar to provide better attributions, which we have. Although this does not satisfy Czar, we are willing to continue adding more that might be deemed more acceptable.
