Stephen Halbrook is a lawyer who is known for his involvement in Second Amendment and gun control litigation. He won two cases he argued before the US Supreme Court, Printz_v._United_States and United States v. Thompson-Center Arms Company He has written several books and articles on the topic of gun control some of which have been cited by other Supreme Court rulings (Heller and McDonald). He has testified before congress on multiple occasions. His work has been described as having a strong pro-gun ideological commitment.

Education

Halbrook attended Florida State University, receiving a B.S. Business in 1969 and a PhD in Philosophy in 1972. He then attended Georgetown University, receiving his J.D. in 1978.

Career

Halbrook began as an instructor of philosophy at Florida State University, 1970-72. While in law school at Georgetown he acted as a Law Fellow of Georgetown's Barristers' Council from 1975-77. After completing his law degree he first became an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at George Mason University, 1980-81. In 1974 he moved to Howard University, 1974-79.

Since 1978 he has been an attorney specializing in civil litigation and criminal defense.

Criticism

University of Chicago Law School law professor Bernard Harcourt wrote in a 2004, Fordham Law Review article titled, On Gun Registration, the NRA, Adolf Hitler, and Nazi Gun Laws: Exploding the Gun Culture Wars (A Call to Historians) wrote about Stephen Halbrook that, "...their ideological commitments are so flagrant - Halbrook as a pro-gun litigator and Pierce as a pro-gun white supremacist -that neither can be trusted entirely in these historical and statutory debates."
