Mullum Malarum
I have listed it at the GOCE. Can u pls begin a copy-edit of it, or request someone else to? Bcos I can't wait for long. ---- Kailash29792 (talk) 10:33, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- The article's listing on WP:GOCE/REQ is a request; however, copyediting is not "rewriting". Neither is "check the sources and writ according to them" or "avoid copyvio trouble" (FWIW, I don't go near articles with suspected copyright problems). Those are the jobs of the nominating editor, and after those problems are fixed is the appropriate time for a copyedit. Miniapolis 21:32, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- Miniapolis, everything in the article is now verifiable and the copy-editor need not check the source before editing. ---- Kailash29792 (talk) 02:47, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
- Bafflegab 1978 has finished copyediting the article, but somehow I am not satisfied with the final outcome. Feels like a plastic surgery gone wrong. Can u pls re-edit it? Kailash29792 (talk) 15:17, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Baffle is a very good copyeditor and in any case, I don't second-guess my colleagues. Take up whatever issues you have with their copyedit with them. Miniapolis 16:01, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker)The thing is, Kailash, I can only copy-edit what's in the article. If you give me a sow's ear I cannot make a silk purse from it, and if I've misinterpreted something it's because it wasn't clearly written in the first place. I did check some sources but don't understand Tamil so checking those sources doesn't help, even with Google Translate. Feel free to make corrections and to request another copy-edit at the GOCE requests page after significant changes have been made, but please don't expect miracles from us because you'll be disappointed. Sorry for dumping on your talk page Miniapolis. :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 17:33, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Glad you saw it, since I thought it was Kailash's place to contact you. Most requesters are appreciative, but some don't understand what is and is not part of a copyedit (and have no clue about the amount of serious time we put into it :-)). All the best, Miniapolis 18:10, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Non-block
There is a request for unblock at User talk:LedgerDocs. In fact, you put a block notice on the talk page, but did not actually block the account. I have placed the unblock request on hold, and perhaps you would like to go back and decide whether or not you want to actually block the account. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:26, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing out my need for a refresher course at new admin school. Since they're amenable to the name change there's no current need for a block, but how would that affect the needed name change? Without a block, would a 'crat need to change the username? If so, I'll place the block so the name change can be done "automatically". Sorry for the snafu. All the best, Miniapolis 15:18, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
- I've (tardily) imposed the block and they've chosen a new username, so you (or any admin passing by) can unblock for the name change; I left a comment at User talk:LedgerDocs to that effect. All the best, Miniapolis 18:43, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
Another block disconnect
Sorry to pile on here, but you informed User:EILIreland that they were soft blocked when in fact you set the block as a hard block and even revoked their email access. As they agreed to a name change as specified in the block notice I have unblocked them. It's an easy mistake to make and I have done it myself once or twice. Not sure if this was the case here, but if you are working reports from UAA you can select options directly from the report and the block settings will be adjusted for you automatically. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:42, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- No, when I screw up I want to know about it :-). I never meant to make it a hard block (to permit the name change), and didn't realize the advisability of retaining email access (frankly, I was a little concerned about off-wiki harrassment). I wasn't working at UAA; this SPA created an AfC (I know, that's redundant) whose subject is identical to their former username (a school). Needless to say, I'll review the blocking policy PDQ. Thanks for the advice and all the best, Miniapolis 20:05, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Great work!
Hello Miniapolis, Thanks for copyediting Christopher Nolan's page back in August. Great work! I've added, re-written and taken away some stuff since, and I wondered if you wanted to take look and give it a super quick pass? Unfortunately my English is not as solid as it should be (I'm Norwegian). I can not for the life of me find out what's wrong with this one "He co-founded the production company Syncopy Inc. with his wife, co-producer Emma Thomas." but it sounds clunky to me. Is it?
Feel free to ignore this message if you don't want to take a look at the article (again).
With many thanks, Robin — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.34.240.72 (talk) 17:43, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, Robin, and I'll take a look at it later today. I'd rephrase the sentence "He co-founded production company Syncopy with his wife, co-producer Emma Thomas", but it's not clunky at all (your English is much better than my Norwegian :-)). All the best, Miniapolis 18:12, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Took a quick look at it (unfortunately, all I have time for), and it still looks pretty good; however, I suggest you read WP:COISIMPLE if you haven't done so already. All the best, Miniapolis 21:23, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Lotus Group page
Hello Miniapolis. Thank you very much for looking at the Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/The Lotus Group page. I wonder if you could explain why you think the company does not appear to be 'notable' according to Misplaced Pages standards and also how one might make the case that it is such. I've examined the guidelines on the notability of organizations and companies and live by the Misplaced Pages golden rule, but these do not help - I would have thought the page has an adequate number of independent references (I've even added a couple more this morning), and believe it is clear that the company does sufficient business to qualify as notable - they arrange the travel of half a million people a year (a significant sum in the UK, if not in the much larger USA) and have assets worth £131,981,949 ($215,566,117). Of course, I am always learning, but I am aware of the basic principles of how Misplaced Pages works and do my best to adhere to these. Most of my contributions stay on the site. This one is a real puzzler. Thanks. --Evenmadderjon (talk) 13:25, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. Given your editing history, I'm surprised that you create articles via AfC (which is intended to help unregistered users). The size of a company does not affect its notability, which is determined by significant coverage in reliable sources which are independent of the subject. Quickly going through the references:
- Fastrack.co are directory listings.
- KentOnline: The subject is mentioned in passing.
- Charitycommission and MakeMyDayBetter: Not about the subject; do not demonstrate notability.
- I don't have time to list the remainder of the refs, but what I see in this article fails WP:NOTADVERTISING (as does Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/DialAFlight). An online encyclopedia does not exist for search engine optimization; is it possible that you have a conflict of interest with the subject? Anyway, I hope this helps. Miniapolis 14:57, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Let me reply to your points:
- A) Using the criteria of 'significant coverage in reliable sources which are independent of the subject' I would say that this page qualifies. Certainly Fasttrack and the London Stock Exchange are both reliable and independent websites, but I suppose the biggest issue here is is their coverage of the site 'significant'. This is a moot point, but I would say yes - the coverage may not be significant in the sense of being a large amount, but it is certainly significant in the sense of being important.
- B) I would also say that Fast Track is not a directory listing in any of the six definitions given on Misplaced Pages is not a directory. Fast Track is a "network of Britain's top private companies" and the Lotus Group is mentioned on their site because this network has assessed their performance and found they are performing well in terms of sales and profits. The company is in the LSE list as it is 'exciting and inspirational' after assessment by the London Stock Exchange (a significant body). One might say these two organisations have found that Lotus Group are a company of note, or indeed they are 'notable'.
- C) The company and subject are indeed 'mentioned in passing' in a number of the references, but having established the notability of the company, these other references seek to build up a better picture of the company as a whole. I have included them because it is not possible to write anything on Misplaced Pages - in this case, about their company operations - without finding a source. Many of my contributions to wikipedia mention the subject in passing, but go towards building up a full picture of the subject. Having said that, the fact that Management Today (an important industry publication in the UK) and the Sunday Times mention Peter Stephens as a top entrepreneur and one of the richest people in travel respectively, is noteworthy.
- D) I am well aware of the Misplaced Pages guidelines on advertising and I don't think this page would fall foul of these. The facts of the company's notability and operations are plainly stated in an objective style, without any attempt to attract customers or alert people to deals or offers.
- E) You are correct that I have some experience writing for wikipedia, and as you also noticed my attempt to create a DialaFlight page, I thought I would go through AfC where it would be easier to discuss the page with someone like yourself. I listened to and accepted the main point made by the previous editor regarding the creation of the earlier page - that more of the sources referred to Lotus Group rather than DialaFlight, hence I changed the page to Lotus Group. I understand that Misplaced Pages does not exist for search engine optimisation, but this company would seem to me as a notable one and worthy of a wikipedia page according to my understanding of how wikipedia works and the notability of the Lotus Group.
- Thanks.--Evenmadderjon (talk) 17:45, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- Renaming the article is not enough; the sources have to demonstrate the notability of the article's subject, not just mention the subsidiary companies. You've disclosed your conflict of interest (if only to me), and anything you write on behalf of your employer must adhere to WP:NPOV; you're not in the best position to assess whether or not this article meets WP:NPOV (two impartial editors—Hasteur and I—believe that it does not in its current state). Again, please see WP:RS (for identifying reliable sources—for companies, business-related sources may not be independent enough to establish notability) and WP:NOTADVERTISING. Miniapolis 21:53, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks.--Evenmadderjon (talk) 17:45, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- I renamed, and slightly re-wrote, the article as Hasteur had commented that the more of the references referred to The Lotus Group, rather than DialaFlight. Hence Lotus Group would be the more appropriate wikipedia page. This seemed a valid point.
- The sources did demonstrate "the notability of the article's subject" - The Lotus Group (the article's subject) was mentioned on various FastTrack pages because that organisation believed the company to be of note. They say it is notable for its fast growing profits and also its large quantity of sales.
- Regarding the reliability of sources: Fast Track is reliable body, there are series of wikipedia pages devoted to it: Sunday Times Fast Track 100, Sunday Times Top Track 250, Profit Track 100, Tech Track 100, and the company's lists also forms the basis of the basis of the wikipedia page List of largest private companies in the United Kingdom. There are many other Misplaced Pages pages that use Fast Track as a source, here are just a few: Opus Energy, Southall Travel, Omnifone and Mimecast (although some reference their own press releases which mention their listing by Fast Track). They are also mentioned on many other commercial Misplaced Pages pages without being referenced (that should be improved): Sofa.com and Samworth Brothers. All the information on the Fast Track site is also published on The Sunday Times, but as that publication is behind a paywall I have had to link to the Fast Track site. I should also mention that The Times and The Sunday Times is the newspaper of record in the UK.
- I did not disclose a conflict of interest, but more importantly the NPOV of the article is a different matter to whether the a) company is a notable one b) sources are reliable. I think I have established above that the sources are reliable, and those same sources ascribe notability to The Lotus Group. If you think that the article lacks a neutral point of view or looks a little like advertising, please tell me how to change it so that the page reflects the company's notability without breaking those rules. Rules I do my best to follow. As I wrote earlier, "the facts of the company's notability and operations are plainly stated in an objective style, without any attempt to attract customers or alert people to deals or offers." which I stand by.
- Finally, to say that "business-related sources may not be independent enough to establish notability" does not seem to be borne out in WP:RS. Most wikipedia pages use articles from specialist media as sources, and I am not sure if business is any less reliable than any other field.
- I'm sure we can both agree that this is a rigorously written page and should go up on Misplaced Pages. Thank you for your help once more. --Evenmadderjon (talk) 14:38, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
- As an American without a background in finance, I'm taking your word for it that fasttrack.co.uk meets WP:RS. A chief criterion is editorial oversight; if a source basically regurgitates press releases from an article's subject, it doesn't meet the guideline. Having a WP page (Facebook, YouTube, IMDb) is by no means an endorsement of a source as reliable, and existence does not equal notability for an encyclopedia article. We see a great deal of advertising (by individuals and organizations) masquerading as articles at AfC, and as a result my internal "spam filter" is high. In any case, I've moved the article to mainspace. Happy holidays and all the best, Miniapolis 18:47, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello, you have declined an article I am trying to submit to Misplaced Pages, this article is about "Goaloids" an Olympic inspired sculpture which is now to be made permanent on Shepherd's Bush green. Can you tell me how to edit this article to get it approved please. Thank you
BeeBrook (talk) 12:42, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
- You may not understand the purpose of Misplaced Pages; it's not a publish-on-demand directory. The blue links in the decline message and my comment explain why I don't think it meets the encyclopedia's notability guidelines; to be suitable for inclusion, an article's subject requires significant coverage in reliable sources which are independent of the subject. If you are the sculptor or work for the town you have a conflict of interest, as I explained earlier. Miniapolis 14:42, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Miniapolis - I've just received additional recommendations from the online help editors. I'd like to improve the article: https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/SocietyOne by: 1. Eliminating all secondary references to blogs or smaller publishers. 2. Eliminating all references to the website 3. Reducing the article length to information reported by major publishers, magazines and newspapers
Do you think this will help with the re-submission? Unfortunately, I don't know how to get around the conflict of interest. Is there a way for an expert wiki editor to contribute to the article to improve the content? Thanks Abey Asaied10 (talk) 22:55, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
- Your three suggestions would certainly improve the article, but don't affect my opinion that the subject does not now meet Misplaced Pages's general notability guideline (which is significant coverage in reliable sources which are independent of the subject). This is the problem with conflict-of-interest editing; your employer (or whoever is creating the COI) wants a WP article (probably for search engine optimization) but Misplaced Pages is an online encyclopedia, not a publish-on-demand directory. Unfortunately, many people don't understand the difference; they're accustomed to feeding press releases (or other self-published sources) to a web host, but WP doesn't work that way. I'm a volunteer editor, and call them as I see them according to the applicable policies and guidelines. You may want to look at the essay Existence≠Notability. GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation
December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors
The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page! The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! Coordinator election: Voting is open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January through 30 June 2014. Voting will run until the end of December. The "How to copy edit" link on the GOCE homepage is a good jumping-off point, and you may want to bookmark the Manual of Style; it seems humongous at first, but is a useful reference. I'm glad to see you've signed up for the January copyediting drive; doing articles from the backlog is a low-stress way to get started. Let me know any other way I can help. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 00:31, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Help!
Thank you again for the copy edit of USS Mahan (DD-364) article and your favorable comment about it. However, today this tag was hung on it.
This article is written like a personal reflection or opinion essay rather than an encyclopedic description of the subject. Please help improve it by rewriting it in an encyclopedic style. (January 2014)
Could you take the time to help me out here? Pendright (talk) 21:44, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
- Not to worry; the tag was removed by a third editor, and I left a note on the tagger's talk page; they should've elaborated on the article talk page or in the edit summary. All the best, Miniapolis 00:50, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you! Pendright (talk) 01:13, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Glad to help (and I wasn't the only one :-)). The tagger is an experienced editor and frankly, I was surprised but we all goof sometimes. Good luck with GA and all the best, Miniapolis 01:18, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
