The first world record in the 100 m for men (athletics) was recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations in 1912.

Notes

  1. In 1896, at the inaugural Olympics in Athens, Greece, Tom Burke ran a twelve second hundred metres - the earliest 'record'. However, this was before the 1912 recognition of records.
  2. Justin Gatlin was briefly credited with an outright world record time of 9.76 from 12 May 2006 until 17 May 2006. According to IAAF rules, his unofficial time of 9.766 should have been rounded to an official time of 9.77, not 9.76.
