- Hurricane Ivan, now a tropical depression, brings flooding rains to the Southern U.S. Ivan has already pummeled Alabama and Florida with high winds and flooding rains, causing extensive structural damage, and leaving 1.5 million customers without electricity and at least 33 dead in the United States.
- Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev issues a statement claiming that he and his group Riyadus-Salikhin were responsible for the Beslan school massacre.
- In a BBC interview, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan describes the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq as "illegal", in that it contravened the UN Charter.
- Outside Britain's Parliament buildings, members of the group Countryside Alliance clash with police as they protest a bill that would ban fox-hunting.
