Narayan studied at P.B. School, ], Nepal where he passed his ] (class 10) and later obtained his intermediate from ], mostly known as RR campus ].

Udit Narayan began his career by singing ], ], ], ] at first when he was in his native country, ] singing for ] as a staff artiste for Maithili and Nepali folk songs. He sang many popular Nepali folk, modern songs on ]. His first film playback singing was for ] ''Sindur''. It was a comedy song for famous Nepali comedians GopalRaj Mainali (Chankhe) and Basundhara Bhushal (Nakkali). It was a duet song with ]— now known as Poornima in Hindi films. After eight years in that role, the Indian embassy offered him the chance to study classical music at a prestigious school in Bombay, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, on a music scholarship.
