2015 FIA Formula OneWorld Championship Previous 2014 Next 2016
The 2015 Formula One season will be the 66th season of the Formula One World Championship, a motor racing championship for Formula One cars which is recognised by the sport's governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), as the highest class of competition for open-wheel racing cars. Teams and drivers will compete for the World Drivers' and World Constructors' Championships.
NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner Gene Haas will enter the sport in 2015 with a brand-new team, Haas Racing Developments. A second candidate team, referred to in an FIA statement as Forza Rossa, is still under investigation as of April 2014.

New entries process
In December 2013, the FIA announced its intentions to open the grid up to more entries, asking for expressions of interest from what it dubbed "competitive teams" willing to commit to the championship until the 2020 season. Three applications were received, including a bid from Gene Haas, co-owner of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team Stewart-Haas Racing; an entry supported by the Romanian government led by former Minister for Health Ion Bazac in conjunction with former Midland, Spyker and HRT team principal Colin Kolles; and a third from Zoran Stefanović, a Serbian aerospace engineer who had previously attempted to join the grid for the 2010 and 2011 Formula One seasons under the name Stefan Grand Prix. The bidding process was delayed amidst reports that the FIA had only been looking to add one team to the grid, but that the Bazac-Kolles and Haas bids were equally viable, with the Romanians prepared to enter in 2015, but Haas preferring to wait until 2016. Gene Haas' Haas Racing Developments was granted a team entry to Formula One by the FIA for 2015, while Bernie Ecclestone announced a second entry, Forza Rossa, had been accepted alongside Haas.
Team and driver changes
- Honda will return to Formula One as an engine supplier, providing McLaren with a V6 engine and Energy Recovery System package, ending the team's 20-year partnership with Mercedes-Benz. Honda had previously supplied McLaren from 1988 until 1992, when Honda ended their engine supply program. The company returned to the sport as an engine supplier in 2000, providing British American Racing and Jordan Grand Prix with engines until they purchased the former in 2006 and competing as a constructor until 2008. In addition to the arrangement with McLaren, Honda have publicised their willingness to supply additional customer teams.
List of planned races
The following twenty one Grands Prix are currently scheduled to take place in 2015.
Calendar changes
- The much-delayed second American race, the Grand Prix of America, set to be run on a street circuit located in the New York City metropolitan area with the city itself providing a backdrop, was originally supposed to be run in 2013, then 2014, but due to financial issues was not and will not be run in either year. The organizers were given more time by Bernie Ecclestone to sort out their financial issues so the race could be run in 2015.
- Promoters of the IndyCar Long Beach Grand Prix have announced plans to bid for the race to return to Formula One. The race was original run as a round of the World Championship under the name United States West Grand Prix from 1976 until 1983 before joining the IndyCar series in 1984.
- The Mexican Grand Prix is scheduled to return to the Formula One calendar for the first time since 1992. The race is to be held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit located in the center of Mexico City, which also was the location of all of the Mexican Grands Prix in previous decades.
- The German Grand Prix is set to return to the Nürburgring, in accordance with the event-sharing agreement established between the Nürburgring and the Hockenheimring in 2008. The Nürburgring had previously hosted the race in 2013.
- The Indian Grand Prix is due to return after a year of absence to the Buddh International Circuit. The Buddh International Circuit last hosted the race in 2013, after it was left off of the 2014 calendar due to political and calendar issues. It will make its return at the beginning of the season, rather than its usual October slot. Bernie Ecclestone later cast doubt on this, suggesting that the race would be further delayed until 2016.
- In March 2014, Ecclestone announced negotiations were underway for a Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, following the success of the Baku World Challenge. Ecclestone gave 2016 as the intended start date, but added that the race would be held at the end of 2015 if it was possible.
Changes
Rule changes
- The number of engines that a driver may use in a season will be reduced from five in 2014 to four in 2015.
Footnotes
- As of 11 April 2014, the Forza Rossa entry was listed as conditional, pending further investigations by the FIA World Motorsport Council as to its viability.
