Retired This user is no longer active on Misplaced Pages.

To anyone I know who still watches my page, this will be the last message I leave on Misplaced Pages. Over the last couple of years I've periodically taken wikibreaks when I felt burnt out and I'm one of the many editors who pseudo-retired and threw up the banners before coming back and making another go at it. As a result I don't really know how much meaningful work I've done on the project in recent times, but there it is. Until now, I would take breaks when I felt my energy to contribute flagging, or when something that happened on Misplaced Pages stressed me out and I didn't feel I could be rational. After a while, I always felt refreshed and would come back and contribute with vigor.

However, in recent times this looks like a place where I no longer want to spend my time. I know the analog is well-worn at this point, but someone I respect mused that we should apply the same standards of professionalism and decorum as other volunteer organizations. I've seen things in the last few months that would get any reasonable person thrown out of a volunteer organization on his ear, and this community doesn't even blink any more. People plead for help and they are ignored, or the lone voice calling for minimal standards of human decency and respect is drowned out until they don't bother any longer. Maybe it's always been this way and I'm just now noticing.

Anyway, I hope the people I know and respect carry on smartly, in particular:

  • SandyGeorgia: Thanks for all the mentoring, good humor, and being a great partner in building up the standards at FAC over the years. Pretty much everything I know about Misplaced Pages, I learned from you either directly or indirectly.
  • Tony1: I learned a lot from you over the years, many times by just observing you. I think you're one of the few people capable of reforming Misplaced Pages, but maybe you don't realize that.
  • Nikkimaria: You are probably the Wikipedian with the highest ratio of effort to recognition. I suck at math but I'm trying to say that you do an awful lot for this project and I hardly ever see people thanking you for it. But, thanks.
  • Brianboulton, Ruhrfisch, and Finetooth: I don't really mean to lump you together but it's better than making this comment 4 times in a row. Through your involvement at PR, the amount of quality writing that you are either directly or indirectly responsible for is staggering. Do you realize that you've probably put more well-prepared prose in front of more eyes than... maybe anyone?
  • Wehwalt: I've always liked your writing. You're like the Stephen King of numismatics.
  • GabeMc: You do such good work, but I see you burning out. I've seen it many times before—the editors that are most passionate about their subjects can also get into a lot of fights and then flame out in spectacular fashion. Misplaced Pages has lost most of its best editors this way. I wish I had a solution for you.
  • GrahamColm and Ian Rose: Thanks for taking on the FAC mantle. I don't know if that or ArbCom is a more thankless job, but I'm glad to have you guys there.

So long, and thanks for all the fish. --Laser brain (talk) 19:52, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Best wishes, Laser brain. I hope that you fill your life with rewarding experiences. FWIW, I think that you are right about just about everything you said above, particularly that things have changed for the worse around here in the last year or so. IMO, its all due to a lack of leadership; there are too many random spheres of influence and too many competing ideologies. I think that burn-out is perhaps an inevitability for some and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The best editors are usually those that put too much into the project, with little chance of that coming back in respect or recognition. Its a thankless place sometimes (read usually), so its really thoughtful of you to leave on such a positive note. Cheers! GabeMc 20:05, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Belated thanks
