Ingvar Carlsson, (born 1934) Swedish politician (Social Democratic Party). After studies in the USA C. became leader of the SSU (Social democrats youth organization) in 1965 and member of parliament in the same year (until the parliamentary reform in 1970 in the second chamber). Minister of education 1969-1973, minister of housing 1973-1976, vice prime minister 1982-1986. After the murder of Olof Palme in 1986 C. became prime minister ("minister of state"). In 1990 C.'s cabinet resigned after failing to gain majority for economic reforms, but was reinstated immediately with a slightly changed agenda. The social democrats lost the elections in 1991, but C. returned to power in 1994-1996. He was succeeded by Göran Persson in 1996. His career has been shaped by the heritage of Olof Palme, with whom C. worked closely. Politically, he is likened to Tage Erlander.
A satirical tv show likened C.'s appearance to the sole of a shoe which led to the (slightly affectionate) use of the nickname the sole ("Sulan").
