Hello
Hello i am new to this site. How are you? and is there an actual place on here where you can just casually chat to other users and not aboht topics or aritcals or pages? Mudak568 (talk) 02:57, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

"containing"
Hello PrimeHunter, I routinely use the "containing" search to find phrases or word groups within articles or other non-article Misplaced Pages pages. I use this function to create inbound wikilinks to new articles, for example. Is it possible that our settings are different, or our browsers? Can you please elaborate at the Teahouse? Thank you. Cullen Let's discuss it 06:19, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

A discussion you may be interested in
Hello PrimeHunter, as you may recall, you had some suggestions yesterday regarding the Egyptian constitution article here . Someone has suggested here that the article be moved. You may want to provide your input, if you want. Thanks, David O. Johnson (talk) 06:08, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
Primecoin (again)
Hi PrimeHunter,
I apologize for bothering you again, but I really would love your expert opinion on the question I've asked earlier, which I'll repeat for your convenience:
I don't know how much you've been following Bitcoin and Primecoin, but for our purposes what you need to know is that the "advantage" of Primecoin over Bitcoin is that, if successful, it will lead to huge amounts of resources spent on finding increasingly difficult Cunningham chains (those funds would otherwise be "wasted").
Would you say that the research that will thus be encouraged will be of significant scientific value?
Thanks, -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 20:00, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- No, not significant value. It seems all it can do is give further empirical evidence for prime distribution conjectures which are generally believed to be true and already have lots of empirical evidence but cannot be proven or disproven by prime searches like Primecoin. It may have value to the participants that they get a chance to set computational records. Lots of people (including me) spend resources on prime searches for no other purpose. I have set many Cunningham Chain records in the past but not participated in Primecoin. I'm not interested in cryptocurrencies but the chance to set records would be a factor if I had to choose between using cpu time on Primecoin and Bitcoin. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:33, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 21:32, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
User:Bobrayner keeps removing massive sourced content...
... that he claims does not have a good enough source, but which has not been objected to for nearly 2 years until he came along: https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Global_city&diff=592681137&oldid=592637232 As can be seen from the article's Revision history (https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Global_city&action=history), he's done it at least 4 times. I've tried to talk to him about it (https://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:Global_city#The_Economist), but he seems determined to keep removing it until someone powerful enough stops him. He's also the same user whose removal of another section of massive content in the same article was reverted by you last year: https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Global_city&diff=553696977&oldid=553675136 - Ujongbakuto (talk) 00:48, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Må man skrive dansk her?--78.156.109.166 (talk) 20:52, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- Yes. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:47, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- Kan du oversætte: Selvfølge. Gad vide. Desværre. Overhalet?--78.156.109.166 (talk) 20:52, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- Det giver ingen mening. Det er bare nogle usammenhængende ord. Google Translate siger: "Of course, wondering, unfortunately, overtaken". Jeg kan ikke gøre det bedre. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:56, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- OK, skulle nok have separeret dem. Google/oversættesider er blokeret/blokerede her, hvis du gad vide/undrede dig (undrede dig = wondered; undrer dig = you wonder). Hvad med by the way fra engelsk til dansk?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.156.109.166 (talk) 20:03, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Nogle gåder:
- Hvordan udtaler man 21,11?
- Hvad betyder 5000000000>>>0,00000000001?
- Hvad betyder 7 ≠ 1?--78.156.109.166 (talk) 20:07, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Se Greater than. >>> er nok en variation af det. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:24, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
PrimeHunter (talk) 20:24, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Rigtige svar:
- En-og-tyve komma en en.
- Ja.
PrimeHunter (talk) 14:08, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Mente, hvordan indtaster jeg #2 i min lommeregner, foruden større end-tegnene?
"3 y 2" for at beregne 3 = 9. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:44, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Hej Jens,

- Hi PrimeHunter! I'm actually a little bit confused. Should I never have ref tags on the Template:whatfishbook page, or do you mean I should never have ref tags on the article page? Also, if I leave the ref tags on the template page itself, the page & quote parameters do not work on the article. Otherwise, if I'm supposed to have the ref tags on the article page, then I've made a big booboo and need to clean up all the articles by adding the tags back on. So, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Thanks, Bananasoldier (talk) 23:01, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

My queries on Help Desk on 24 February re accessing Help Desk and Wiki amendment
Just wanted to thank you for your clear and helpful answers to my queries yesterday. Sorry I did not specify which amendment I was referring to; I had no idea Wiki had so many amendments running. Not only that, but I was able to clean up an article about a children's author... Thanks again. Juneau Mike (talk) 22:54, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

The real curio...
It seems that that's not a coincidence either, but also works for any number system. You have to change the number of 1 digits to match the base. 1111111 squared in octal is 1234567654321 and 111111111111111 squared in hexadecimal is 123456789ABCDEFEDCBA987654321 :) CodeCat (talk) 03:15, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- I know. It's an old well-known curio I referred to by "the real curio". The IP made an amputated version which required rounding to work. It's clear there is no coincidence and other bases work the same when we calculate 111111111 as:
11111111100000000 + 1111111110000000 + 111111111000000 + 11111111100000 + 1111111110000 + 111111111000 + 11111111100 + 1111111110 + 111111111 ------------------- 12345678987654321

Wikidata/interlanguage query
Hi PrimeHunter. I saw your reply at the Teahouse yesterday, and I wonder whether you might be able to lend a hand with something similar? I'm doing some work on the en-wiki article Juldarigi, and would like to add an interwiki link to ko-wiki's article 줄다리기. Unfortunately, that article already links to the en-wiki page Tug of war, and so I can't add it to the Juldarigi page. I've had a read of WP:Interwiki conflicts, which frankly I can't make head nor tail of, and H:IL isn' a lot of help. Wikidata scares me a bit - can you solve this problem (not the scared bit, that just requires me to man up a little)? Cheers, Yunshui 水 10:35, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
- @Yunshui: This is different from the Teahouse situation. English appears to be the only language with separate articles for Juldarigi and Tug of war. The lead of 줄다리기 is about general tug of war and then there is a section (longer than the lead) about Juldarigi, but interlanguage links are for the topic of the whole article and not a section. I'm not convinced 줄다리기 should link to Juldarigi. If it does anyway, while simultaneously linking to tug of war articles in all other languages, then I don't think it can be done at Wikidata. The end of the article could have the old-style
]
to override Wikidata but I don't know whether any processes will interfere with that. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:25, 17 April 2014 (UTC)- I hadn't even thought of doing it the old-fashioned way - thanks for the suggestion! Yunshui 水 13:58, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
Reimagining Mentorship proposal
Hi PrimeHunter. I've noticed you spend a good amount of time helping new editors (thanks!), so I wanted to bring your attention to a grant proposal under review. A small team of us want to implement a system of mentorship that focuses on the specific skills new editors want to learn and incorporates the 1-on-1 relationships from the adopt-a-user programs. Please read over our proposal here. At this stage, your feedback would be much appreciated, particularly as you work with new editors on a regular basis, and we want to make our proposal fit the community's needs. You can leave comments on the grant talk page, and if you like the proposal, please feel free to add your endorsement at the bottom of the page.
In addition, we are gathering information and attitudes from experienced editors on the current ways new editors can get help. If you are interested, please consider taking our brief survey here. Thanks very much, I, JethroBT 05:47, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Finding a MW message
Thanks for your help regarding MediaWiki:Permissionserrorstext-withaction; that wasn't the page I needed, but your https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Cheese&action=delete&uselang=qqx gave me the page I did need. Just curious: what is uselang=qqx — a testing language? It looks interesting and useful, but I've never seen it before and don't know what it can do. Nyttend (talk) 18:14, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
- @Nyttend: uselang=qqx just does what you have already seen: It writes the name of MediaWiki namespace messages instead of their content. See mw:qqx. There is a gadget for it: "Add a toolbox link to display the current page with MediaWiki message names replacing their text". The gadget simply adds uselang=qqx to the url so you don't have to do it manually. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:24, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks so much! I don't remember ever seeing that gadget or hearing of this feature before. I'm always wishing that I knew a MW message name, so this will really be helpful. Nyttend (talk) 23:27, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
"Chihiro number"
Hi Jens, noticed you just included content about this. Have you ever heard of it described as the Chihiro number before now? I couldn't find any google presence not linked to the Misplaced Pages article created a couple of days ago...I made a post about it here. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers, Daniel (talk) 13:49, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

- It wasn't my post. SineBot posts a contribs link on the IP address so it's easy to find out what happened. Click the IP address and then the help desk diff . PrimeHunter (talk) 23:11, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- Then the IP edit was a test edit, almost harmless, but I will warn the IP. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:39, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Hopefully that did it
Hello PrimeHunter, As you suggested, I did go into my prefs and changed my signature so that it contains only my current WP name, and removed the former name. At least, I THINK I was successful. PLMK if I am wrong and more needs to be done. Thanks again for alerting me to the problem. ] (talk) 19:08, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Trying once more. EMP (talk) 19:11, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Still not right. This should work (copy it from the source): EMP (talk). You can also simply blank the signature field and disable "Treat the above as wiki markup". That gives a default signature like mine. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:09, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Took your suggn and blanked the sig field and disabled the check box. Thanks! EMP (talk) 21:32, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

"such as" does not mean "required"
Some editors, most aggressively Werieth who has orphaned eight of my USPS licensed uploads for speedy deletion, seem to have taken a phrase from WP:NFLISTS #2 and miscast it. "Images which are discussed in detail in the context of the article body, such as a discussion of the art style, or a contentious element of the work, are preferable to those that simply provide visual identification of the elements." - note: emphasis added.
Only "contextual significance" is REQUIRED by NFCC #8, and critical commentary is only suggested as possible alternative narrative at WP:NFLISTS as "preferable" to simply providing a visual identification of the stamp's design. I am seeking confirmation of existing policy as it applies to the specific image File:Virginia ratification 1988 U.S. stamp.1.jpg being appropriately used on article History of Virginia on stamps at the "Virginia Ratification Convention" discussion.
The stamp itself is named for an event, the Virginia Ratification Convention, the stamp itself is issued on the anniversary of the event by the USPS which said it knew the significance of the date, the encyclopedic narrative places the commemorative stamp itself in the "contextual significance" of NFCC#8--for the context of the article, History of Virginia on stamps, by historical analysis --- though not with a literary critique or artistic commentary which is suggested as preferable to simple description of the stamp design. The unique barbell footprint of the colonial Capitol building gave equal space to royal functions in one wing and colonial legislative functions in the other, so there is even some architectural significance to the design.
I guess my bottom line is, in addition to critical commentary and controversy, I would like to see historical analysis admitted as "contextual significance" for commemoratives in "History of Virginia on stamps" and other topical philately articles. I am not interested in changing policy, simply expanding the administration of the existing regulations in ways which are permitted by policy. This is alternatively belittled as simply asserting all stamps have import, or merely describing the explicit event pictured without any context or significance imparted in historical analysis.
I have expanded my characteristic descriptions of stamps in articles significantly from last month, and I intend to continue to improve. Is this something which can be brought to Media copyright questions, Non-free content, NFCR or village pump? I can find no guideline on which forum to begin with or in what ordered sequence. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 17:53, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
- I don't work with image policy and cannot help. I only posted to Misplaced Pages:Media copyright questions#RfC: Is stamp non-free content use explained by WP:NFCI Guideline #3? after investigating Misplaced Pages:Help desk#Can't find RFC that bot asked me to comment on. - Okay. Thanks for the reply. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 06:07, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Improper behavior
PrimeHunter, I was speaking with Spinningspark about the inline audio being used in the morse code page on the village pump and you entered the discussion for no other reason than to make an ad hom about my signature. That was disruptive, if you have problem with my signature drop a note off on my page, or if you really feel strongly about it, put a note on ANI, but don't disrupt a discussion on something else to do that. Yes, your text is still there, I didn't remove it or archive it in any fashion, I'm hoping you'll do that on your own. Thanks KoshVorlon Angeli i demoni kruzhili nado mnoj 18:27, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Mott MacDonald logo.gif
Thanks for uploading File:Mott MacDonald logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:24, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Alphascript Publishing, Betascript Publishing and so on...
Hi,
I wonder if you are still dealing with those Misplaced Pages printed rip-offs? They still appear on Amazon and Google Books, but I think I have the answer to the problem: you could (a) get the Wikimedia Foundation to send a cease-and-desist to the publisher (the group) on moral grounds (i.e. quality), and (b) get the Wikimedia Foundation to send letters to the seller that a cease-and-desist on moral grounds was sent to the publisher and they are kindly request to help protect Misplaced Pages's quality by removing those books. What do you think? Anyway, do you have an example of those ripoffs so I can check if there is anything that the WMF can use to argue for the take-down of the ripoffs?
As a side note, those Misplaced Pages rip-offs remind me of the POP Stations and iPhone rip-offs that Stuart Ashen reviews. Thanks in advance, --Marianian 05:06, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
- @Marianian: I'm no longer active in this area. I'm a volunteer editor and not a lawyer but I don't see a valid legal reason to go after them. I don't have an example book but they appear to satisfy our license, and Misplaced Pages deliberately allows reuse of articles. Also, I don't see how it would help protect Misplaced Pages's quality to remove the books. The victims here are not Misplaced Pages but the people who buy the books or waste time considering them. Request for comment
Hello there, a proposal regarding pre-adminship review has been raised at Village pump by Anna Frodesiak. Your comments here is very much appreciated. Many thanks. Jim Carter through MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:46, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
United States Congress members who died in office Article
I noticed that you recently added Paul Wellstone to the list in the United States Congress members who died in office article, and I was wondering if you noticed my comments on the article's Talk page regarding the need to expand the list to include members of Congress who died in office prior to the 1990s. --TommyBoy (talk) 04:37, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- @TommyBoy: I saw your post but I don't want to spend time adding other people. I was only responding to Misplaced Pages:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Archive 46#Wellstone death missing from two Misplaced Pages lists, can someone fix this. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:43, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- No problem, please feel free to add to the list when you have time. --TommyBoy (talk) 19:15, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Switzerland??
- I have no idea why that was entered, as there is no reference to it in the article I cited! I am not even a football fan! Thank you for correcting this, as I am completely bewildered how that got in there, as I have no memory of writing the phrase (or is it a clause?). I have a feeling it was already there, but, normally, I would insert a "Citation needed" tag, so it was probably me! This is the first time this has happened. Anyhow, thank you!--Soulparadox (talk) 06:52, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Caroline Wozniacki
Do you know how ‘Caroline Wozniacki’ is pronounced in Polish? As it is, the article gives the Polish pronunciation for ‘Karolina Woźniacka’. Esszet (talk) 19:56, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- @Esszet: I don't know Polish. I only know both spellings are used in Polish but know nothing about pronunciation. If there is a big difference between the two and both are widespread then maybe we should avoid the issue by not having a Polish pronunciation. Some Polish people would probably disagree but it doesn't seem essential for a Danish athlete in the English Misplaced Pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:43, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- According to this, it's , which is fairly similar to the English pronunciation, so it's probably best relegated to a footnote. Esszet (talk) 21:58, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
