In a sexual context, a facial is the slang term for the sexual activity in which a man directs an ejaculation of semen onto the face of another person, typically as part of the sex act of fellatio.
Techniques
A man can either perform intercourse and withdraw his penis before ejaculating and position it near his partner's face or masturbates to orgasm with the penis positioned close to the partner's face. The ejaculate is sometimes partially directed into the mouth. Since semen can sting the eyes, receivers may close their eyes or ask their partners to avoid the area. If the receiving partner is female, the act may be seen as an act of male domination. A facial may also occur accidentally during an act of fellatio.
Ejaculation onto the face is not a safer sex act, as there is a minimal (but nonetheless possible) risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease through the mucous membranes, eyes, or any open cuts or sores on the recipient's facial area.
Social Attitudes
Attitudes toward and acceptance of the act vary widely depending on the preferences of the partners and society involved. In Western society, a common criticism of this act is that it objectifies the receiving partner.
In pornography, the facial is an accepted convention used to end a scene (also known as a "money shot or Blamo"). This was traditionally to show that an actual sexual act had occurred. It is common for a fellatio scene in pornography to end with the male actor ejaculating onto the woman actress' face. In Padraig McGrath's review of Laurence O'Toole's book Pornocopia – Porn, Sex, Technology and Desire, he rhetorically asks whether "...women enjoy having men ejaculate on their faces?"
He suggests that the role of a "cum shot" scene such as this is to suggest that "...it doesn’t matter what the woman likes – she’ll like whatever the man wants her to like because she has no inner life of her own, in turn because she’s not a real person." McGrath argues that there is a "power-aspect" to depictions such as "come shots." He alleges that the "...central theme is power... implicitly violent...eroticized hatred."
Related terms
Bukkake is when a group of men ejaculate onto the face(s) of a smaller group of receivers, often one.
